I do feel and am
Hoping for Inue to come through I feel that they respond well to him on many levels.
Just my $.02 on the PL:
Hawks - big budget, corporate, money well spent
Eagles - big budget, corporate, money spent incompetently
Orix - tries really, really hard with hardcore fans and strong marketing but can't get over playing in Tigerland
Fighters - cheery fans, lots of chance themes, takes chances on a lot of interesting project players, always punches above their weight. Great stadium.
Seibu - can't regain their past glory. Loud fans (positive), awful stadium (but good seats/food)
Lotte - not broadly popular but those who like Lotte, love Lotte. Fans very loud (loudest in Japan), very friendly, travel extremely well. Front office tries but can't hide they haven't won a PL title since 1974.
I love Seibu's stadium.
I find it interesting that there's really only two categories of people I've run into, those that hate Belluna with a passion and those who quite like it.
Even though it's cheap and easy for me to go to, I never go there these days
The major knocks against it are that it's a literal sauna in July & August and the location poses a challenge for some fans.
Otherwise it's fine. A bit dated, sure. But it has more character than a soulless enclosed dome stadium would, and -very importantly- I find it to be family friendly.
Multiple play areas (inside and outside), a train car where kids can sit in the cab and pretend to be the driver, and a free field walk experience after many games for more running around.
I do also. The train ride sets you up for a fun experience, and the carnival atmosphere en route to the ballpark from the train is enjoyable. Yes, it can be extremely hot and humid inside, but the ballpark experience is positive. Their baseball group is respectful to scouts, and highly responsive and professional.
Saitama is far from Tokyo, for sure, although clearly Jingu wins when it comes to hot and humid, there is absolutely no doubt of this. I appreciate your kind response.
I think the marines are probably most well known for home grown support that's pretty cheery win or lose. (and having the best stadium but that's a biased assertion)
I enjoy the walk to and from Keihin-Makuhara station, and love the station's shops and restaurants.
Hanshin fanbase are loud and brash and most prone to yell insults to both opposing players and also their own (if they think they’re underperforming). In general their identity is ‘Giant’s rival’ but the feeling is not quite mutual.
I just got into NPB recently and chose the Tigers as my team, so guess I better start getting into character lol
I'm a Phillies fan and chose the Tigers as my NPB team and it seems like its a perfect fit.
Lots of good comparisons have been made.
Hawks are spending and developing smart like the Dodgers.
Giants have the historical success and huge following like the Yankees.
Tigers have a big fanbase and historic stadium like the Cubs.
Swallows get overlooked like the Mets as the second major team in central Tokyo.
Baystars kind of have an Orioles vibe. Great stadium, great fans, great city but always kind of mid to upper (but not top) of the division.
Fighters have been very bold with promotions, new stadium and the fan experience. This kind of reminds me of Bill Veeck. The team itself kind of reminds me of the Mariners isolated up in Hokkaido like the M's in PNW.
One comparison I haven't seen (I don't think) is Orix to the White Sox. Everyone (even beyond Osaka or Chicago) loves the Cubs and Tigers and their historic stadiums. Orix and the White Sox are the other team in the city.
Living in Osaka you rarely see Orix fans on their way to games ( there aren't that many and they aren't proudly displaying their gear ) , I see Tigers fans on public transport everywhere. There are also quite a lot of erm. 'characters' on public transport fully decked out in Tigers gear.
Yeah, Tigers fans do a takeover of the local area when they travel for games. Very impressive. I can't imagine what it looks like in Osaka on gameday.
I saw decent numbers of Buffaloes fans at Meiji and Belluna but nothing like Tigers on a weekday in Yokohama.
The Carp have a die-hard fanbase in Hiroshima and the fans love the team and show up whether they’re good or not- kinda like the Rockies. The team is considered emblematic of the resurrection of Hiroshima post-bombing. Their gameplay style currently lacks star power since Suzuki was posted to the Cubs, and they play what Trevor Bauer tastelessly called “cockroach baseball”- not powerful, but hard to put down. A string of guys getting on base that you just can’t quite stamp out. It has not proven to be terribly effective.
The Hiroshima ballpark is terrific, and the okonomiyaki huts around the train station are phenomenal.
I agree with this!
always liked the descriptions in this post:
Lions are the best because I like them
Truer words were never spoken.
This is the way 🥵
ah, the padres approach. Very technical!

Well, the non-cynical answer would be that in the Dome era (1997-Present) the focus has been on squeezing out runs while leaning heavily on the pitching staff. That being said, the most successful period for the team was when there was a very good offensive core. That being said, you look at the run differential of many of those teams between 2003 and 2012, and there are some pretty lean years. 2011, when they won the pennant, I think it was barely a positive run differential iirc.
Presently, the team seem to be trying to take a more offensive approach. Less defensive mettle across the board, playing hitters over defenders in more cases. So, I'd say the identity of the team is gradually shifting away from the Ochiai era small-ball identity.
The Dragons as a team are known culturally for being a bit stoic and conservative, though. They're not a happy-go-lucky team generally, and a visible hard work ethic (gambaru your gaman) and just being a hardass seems to be valued somewhat.
