don't the Yankees have the most left due to the issues with guys they had agreements with in January, or did they spend it on other players. There might Not be IFA pool next year
They begin negotiating around now, but I guess yes the Yankees could try to get him earlier ? He would probably be forgoing a lot of money tho assuming he gets max allocation (usually around 5-6mil I believe)
Maybe.
The system could completely change after the lockout.
If Spotrac is close on their estimates, it’s the Yankees, Rockies, and Pirates as the only teams with $2 million plus

Ngl the Cubs would be the biggest bidders since they, as usual, need arms bad
No one is outbidding the Dodgers for a japanese player dude be real 😂
I can see it, wholeass city of Chicago in general needs pitching lol
Idk man this sub collectively yapped that line for Murakami and here we are. At this point it's just a lazy karma farming performance to start bitching "DAE this Japanese player on the Dodgers?????"
The Dodgers had nowhere to play Murakami because he would never play 3B in the majors, Freddie would never be moved to 3B to let him play 1B, and Ohtani clogged the DH spot.
Yes I know, that should've been obvious, but it didn't stop the aforementioned yapping with some people actively theorizing that he would've been okay with sitting in the minors just to be on the Dodger roster.
I mean im just saying if the Dodgers want him, they’re gonna get him. No one will/can outbid.
Not how that works. They are considered IFAs and teams are subject to all the rules surrounding that system. They can’t just back up the brinks truck, though if a player is determined to take the dodgers’ offer over any other team’s then that’s that. But it’s not a matter of outspending.

What's the consensus on this guy?
His NPB draft stock isn't particularly high, which is probably why he's trying a different route
He hasn't even been tested in the NPB. Signing him right out of college is a gamble.
It’s international bonus pools though. You’re not giving him any type of lucrative contract, he’s not really any more of a gamble than any other player acquired like that.
Depends if we sign him or not
There’s no chance you do (you have no flair)
My sources are telling me a new expansion team based out of the backyard of the guy you're responding to are looking up pick him up
Looks like he's a baseball pitcher.
Absolutely nothing against any individual kid, but I am concerned about leagues like NPB losing talent to MLB all the time and hence having a lower level of play
It's just going to get worse. If money wasn't enticing enough, now just about every Japanese kid playing baseball wants to follow in Ohtani's footsteps and be a star in the MLB.
And few can do that. They'll be in NPB
I think these kids that want to take that route are going to severely underestimate the support they'll be given in the minors. They'll be toiling away in tiny towns USA, little to no language support, incredibly small to no community for their culture, etc.
We saw how much it impacted Imai, and that was with a major league organization. Yeah, the city of Houston has a sizeable Japanese population, but the Houston organization was not prepared to help him transition to MLB and America.
NPB has to be ready to give these guys development time so they can go overseas still in their prime. Japanese clubs can then reinvest posting money into developing talent. Not every MLB aspirant will be good enough to eventually make the jump, so you keep reasonable talent. Maybe they actually enjoy playing in Japan so much they stay. Maybe they take a 3-year deal in the majors at 26 and flame out, the good will generated may bring them back.
The genie is out the bottle now. NPB needs to innovate to accommodate for these players.
I think it'll work itself out when enough young Japanese players realize it's a choice between developing at home or in Northwest Arkansas.
Angels now is your chance

I was gonna say this is the plot to Major lol. He's gonna lead Japan to a WBC title in a few years
Then he'll have to overcome the yips
I don’t remember anything like this happening before, what kind of risk is he taking on himself in terms of how much money he could make now versus going the traditional route? I don’t have the slightest idea at NPB contracts look like for players that are drafted.
You don't remember hearing about this before because those who have tried have failed
Lets look at how the Shotaro Morii experience is going! Yikes.
he will be a Blue Jay
It's so lame how many of these players are just completely forgoing the NPB. Both systems need a lot of work (and DR and PR) to allow international scenes to grow first and also cultivate players before everyone takes the risk. NPB prospects have even less info about them.
I think this is okay. Very rarely does anyone do it, and the track record for success from it is very low for both skipping NPB and KBO. What does need a change is the posting from NPB to MLB. There are problems on both spectrums of the posting system. Some players can't leave for far too long, and some players are leaving for too little. I think a revision of when and how a player is allowed to be posted but with an added fee for all postings regardless of contract size would help a lot. All my opinion though and I would love to hear other opinions.
I think I'd agree with that. Either bailing on the entire Japanese ecosystem or letting it shackle you for your entire development years doesn't seem particualrly good for the player, but cant deny NPB's prerogaive to protect themselves from MLB just poaching whatever star establishes themselves.
Yeah I'm sure it's not perfect but it solves a few problems I think. MLB gets their stars more consistently, future NPB players are persuaded to stay in Japan knowing there is a reasonable timeline if they wish to go to MLB, NPB ballclubs get more money for players like around the Okamoto and Murakami level, and players like Senga are able to spend at least a few years of their prime in MLB unlike what has happened with him.
※NCAA:National Collegiate Athletic Association(全米大学体育協会)
Can you even name two recent players who forgoed the NPB for MLB after college in Japan?
There’s a few like Nishida who go to NCAA colleges, but it’s hardly many. And those go into the main draft rather than international signing pool so really a different category since MLB entry point will be different.
Rintaro Sasaki? This isn't something that has constantly happened. I'm bringing it up because it just started to happened. I'm talking about what's happened to Latin America as a cautionary tale. Puerto Rico reps just talked about this when the WBC was happening.
I mean is it? The MLB is the ultimate place to be. Sure domestic leagues are cool but the dream is to make it to MLB. Like, I won’t be calling for systemic change because American soccer players would vastly prefer to go to European teams over the MLS if they can. That’s just the way it is, if you think you’re good enough to compete with the best in the world there’s one place to do that.
Not all Japanese NPB superstars wants to play in MLB though, which was was one of the reasons why Hayato Sakamoto (dubbed as the Derek Jeter of Japan), Tetsuto Yamada (dubbed as the Mike Trout of Japan), Yuki Yanagita, etc. stayed in NPB despite a number of MLB team’s interest during their productive years in Japan.
Sure, that’s fine, it’s their choice to do that. But there doesn’t have to be a “systemic problem” for players to want to go to the MLB especially after Ohtani and Yamamoto have shown how amazing it is to be under the brightest lights.
Not everyone's dream is to make it to MLB
Not at all what I'm saying and the reason they're skipping is because of the systemic issues, not because he's so elite that he can easily make the jump. People always use this excuse when it benefits the US but baseball is not like basketball or football. People aren't immediately developing in the same way. And, they don't have the full infrastructure to support en masse.
For the MLB, this is about stealing talent while they're cheap and taking the slight risk of paying well early so they don't have to pay exponentially more for someone as a FA. Japan has the best international league in place of them, DR, and PR. Therefore, they had the most power to broker a deal that gave up their rights the least. DR had a middle ground with some systems (mainly by former players), so they get a youth signing period that doesn't completely drain their well and also allows kids to develop for a bit still in the DR. PR completely had everything stolen from them and now their fields are wastelands and they have little talent to cultivate.
It behooves the MLB to have interest being generated for baseball directly in these countries around the world. You want to talk about soccer like there's only one league out there that isn't MLS. There are numerous leagues that also work in concert with one another and because they are all so well funded it strengthens the overall product instead of needing everyone to grow in one place.
People that have no understanding of international baseball just want everything put in front of them, so it's either people don't exist or they're in the MLB. Of course the end result will be to get people competing against one another in The Show, but a long game needs to play the long game and not be so short-sighted in its development process in pursuit of money.
What a backwards view and bunch of nonsense.
Talent wasn’t stolen. He is his own person who picked a path that he feels is best for him. That’s perfectly fine, so what if it doesn’t most benefit the NPB.

It's subject to international bonus pools, so bidding isn't really an issue here. He's essentially picking his team
