This was the turning point of Game 2. Bottom of the 3rd, runner on 2nd, on a 3-2 pitch Yamamoto paints the outside edge and wants to use one of the Dodgers two challenges, but Will Smith refuses. Yamamoto later gets taken out after only recording 2.2 innings pitched.

If Yamamoto wants the challenge you give it to him.
Every time Yama and Betts make immediate reaction towards a wrong call, I question them if they don't challange. Wtf they don't trust themselves? They know better, and they should show more confidence.
I think most pitchers are delegated to trust the catcher and this is especially in the post season, since pitchers aren’t in a reliable position to accurately call them
Absolutely. What a joke. Smith has been our worst player this postseason by a country mile.
You realize Yamamoto can challenge it himself right?
Yes but a lot pitchers put full trust in their catchers for challenges, since pitchers tend to think everything is a strike
It is a bit weird that the ump wouldn't call it here when Yoshi clearly taps his head.
He tapped the side not top. He's deferring to Will Smith.
If you're Will, and Yama is asking you to challenge, you tap. Unless you're fully convinced it missed the K zone by a country mile, you tap here. Your pitcher is struggling, this is a walk vs strikeout difference. It's the difference between 1 & 2 and 1 out versus 2 and 2 outs. Huge difference.
He tapped the side not top.
There is no rule stating you need to tap the top of your helmet/cap.
The player taps his cap or helmet to alert the umpire to his desire to challenge the call. Players are also encouraged to verbalize their challenge, to leave nothing to doubt, but the cap/helmet tap represents the official challenge.
In fact, Kyle Tucker, later that very game gets a challenge by tapping the side of his helmet.
IDK。
There is no rule stating you need to tap the top of your helmet/cap.
IDK. The ump didn't do anything and Yamamoto looked like he was expecting Will to do something.
AFAIK Tucker told the ump he's challenging too.
You're wrong, there is no requirement for it to be the top of your helmet/cap.
The player taps his cap or helmet to alert the umpire to his desire to challenge the call. Players are also encouraged to verbalize their challenge, to leave nothing to doubt, but the cap/helmet tap represents the official challenge.
Tucker does the side tap later that game and gets his challenge.
IMO they need to be more clear with what triggers a challenge from the pitchers end since it's not feasible to verbalize a challenge from that distance esp with crowd noise.
Either they tighten up the rule, or they should have called that a challenge because by the way the rule is laid out right now, Yamamoto technically challenged it by double-tapping the side of his cap. Perhaps the ump didn't see it because he was looking at Will's glove, not sure.
If Yamamoto was really confident, he would've tapped his head again and tell umpire that this really is a challenge. Instead, he had doubts so he wanted Will to confirm the challenge. Will didn't think it was a strike. It was third innings and he didn't want to waste it here. This is not on Will or the umpire. You are angry at the wrong people here
Too bad.
Umps ask for confirmation before granting the challenge. We saw this multiple times in the Padres/Brewers series. They have been making sure the players are extra clear on intent to challenge for the postseason.
So Yoshi lowering his hand is essentially stating that, "No, I wont' actually challenge. My catcher has convinced me otherwise"
Catchers often have more objective view, so most pitchers rely on their catchers to make final decision.
Is there a rule preventing the pitcher from challenging? I thought they could.
If he wants a challenge he can also use one.
Yama is a big boi and can pat his own hat if he likes. This isn’t on smith
I think their philosophy of challenging is skewed too much to save til later innings. I understand you want to keep them for possibly bigger moments later in the game, but there is no guarantee that happens. In big moments like that and in key situations whether it’s a potential strikeout/walk, you need to fire those bullets if it’s close.
Players like Yana and mookie should be able to challenge earlier.
Players like pages absolutely should be banned from challenging
Yeah when your ace wants a challenge, I would give him that chance to see if he's right or wrong especially in a situation like that where it could have been a second out.
If he was wrong, having that question answered would have allowed him to correct. Not knowing really played mind games with Yamamoto last night
100%. Yoshi was let down in many ways last night.
I do agree with this thought.
Exactly. It’s all about importance regardless of when it happens.
It’s like the idea of putting a high leverage reliever in the 5th if you really need to instead of saving him for the 8th when the game has already blown up.
Hell, we saw Mookie challenge in the first inning and it immediately led to a run.
This is so right. EK spent all season talking about how challenges shouldn't be wasted in early innings, but he is wrong. They should be used when they will matter a lot. The first inning is a high leverage inning! The score is tied. Your best pitcher is on the mound. How many times do we see teams save challenges just to have to use them up in the ninth on calls that aren;t very important or close?
EK never ever said not to waste them in early innings. He always emphasized leverage, and was ok with early calls in such situations.
I don't know dude. He was pretty negative every time it was used early and he summarized his views as that they should be used late. Besides, the point I am making is the first inning is high leverage.
Because there was no gain from the outcome. Not a high leverage situation.
Exactly. If it was 2 strikes with two outs and a runner in scoring position, he wouldn’t have been negative. It’s about the win expectancy and how much that could change the game.
He’s still fuming from that one time last July when Pages challenged a pitch in the second inning.
yep you can’t always bank on that a bigger moment will happen later. A saved challenge has no value if you don’t have a better opportunity to use it.
I am sure the Dodgers have a guy in the front office running the numbers and going over these challenges with Dave & the boys on a regular basis.
I think they just got used to never giving up runs after walks thanks to us!
Exactly - and had they challenged, Will would've been right.
No, ABS said this was a strike.
I get that Dave is trying to avoid wasting challenges early in the game in case the call wasn't close enough, but this is Yama we're talking about. Arguably the team's most accurate pitcher.
I mean the two strikes the ump missed (it's his responsibility first of all) absolutely fucked the game. A game shouldn't hinge on two strike calls, but the Brewers would have put up literally nothing and Yama gets into the 4th and beyond without it.
I hate that logic though. One run in the 1st is worth exactly the same as one run in the 9th
Wasn't yama tapping enough for umpire?
I might be wrong, but its on the top of your head not on that other spot
yea but Tucker did the side tap on his challenge and it was granted
He was talking out loud to the ump when he did that
Pretty sure he said “Give it a little tappy, tap tap taparoo”
No, Umpires have been asking players for confirmation to challenge this postseason.
If you tap your head, but then back down, the umpires will not automatically call for a challenge.
We saw this multiple times in the Padres/Brewers series.
That's too bad. Could have been a game changer for the Dodgers. Although 3 hits isnt exactly lighting it up.
Yep. And I know the bats are doing horrible. But both game 1 and game 2 were still winnable, despite that.
Hopefully somebody can show a sign of life in that lineup tomorrow.
Monday was ripping Will Smith for not challenging 3 different calls that all would have been strike 3.
Will Smith's been dogshit this entire series as a whole.
Monday has the benefit of that Fox Sports box. Will doesn't.
The local broadcasters no longer see the strike zone, I assume this would be the same for National broadcasters?
Hmm. I didn't know that. They don't see the K zone box that we get on TV?
Yes, that was a tipping point
We get that out and the big inning dont happen
Ok but we still only managed 3 hits
Which is why it's still hilarious that the game was winnable. Since the team was gifted 3 runs.
Unlike game 1, the score had no business being that close in game 2.
When this happened, I told my brother this was the turning point in this game. There was another similar call that wasn’t challenged.
Up to the end of 3rd inning, 5/5 brewers run in the series involved some (unchallenged) uncalled strike
Yama knew
And the one in the first inning. That pitch was much more obviously a strike. A good catcher should be able to recognize that and challenge the call. It could’ve saved Yama a run and about 10 pitches, and maybe even prompted the umpire to adjust his strike zone.
I didn’t like hearing him say that he wasn’t sure and he thought Yama could have other ways to get the batter. I don’t agree. It’s postseason and we are against the brewers, we need to take any opportunity to get the outs. Please help your pitcher.
I love how Mookie adjusted. In the first inning of NLDS G1, he had a really good AB but ended up striking out on a called strike. I think he was pretty sure it was a ball, but didn’t want to risk wasting a challenge in case he was wrong. This time in a similar situation, he decided to challenge, and it ended up turning into a run.
I thought the whole team had worked on the challenge timing thing because they had been bad, but apparently I was wrong. This has happened several times over the past few games, and Will still hasn’t adjusted. I don’t know if he’s having trouble recognizing the strike zone or if he’s just too hesitant. I’m really disappointed.
