何年か前の韓国語の授業で、韓国における野球の歴史についてプレゼンしたことがあるよ。「京城」チームのことや、日本統治下の緊張感についてもスライドを作ったな。

For my Korean class years ago, I did a presentation about the history of baseball in Korea. I had a page on the "Keijo" team and the tension of the Japanese occupation.

今の台湾にあたる地域から参加したチームもあったんだよね。

There were also participating teams from what is now Taiwan.

大連は中国語名だな。日本統治下では大連（ダイレン）と呼ばれてたけど、確かに大連（Dalian）の方が響きはいいかも。

Dalian is the Chinese name. It was called Dairen under Japan, but Dalian does sound nicer.

しかも大連という名前自体、ロシア統治時代の「ダルニー」を日本人が音訳したものなんだよ。俺の知る限り、ロシア・日本・中国のハイブリッド名を持つ唯一の都市だから、歴史オタクなら行ってみると面白いぞ。中国北部における日露（＋英）の帝国主義争いの歴史を物語る場所だし、飯も激ウマだ！

And Dairen itself is a Japanese transliteration of the name under Russian occupation of Dalnyy / Да́льний which afaik makes Dalian the only city with a Russian-Japanese-Chinese hybrid name — it’s an interesting city to visit if you’re a history nerd. One of the lands that tell the history of Russia and Japan (plus the British)’s imperialist race in northern China. Food is amazing too!

Wait this totally upends my understanding of the history of baseball in Japan. I always though American GIs brought the sport to Japan after WW2 but this means it was there before the war. How was the sport popularized in Japan?

1870年代にアメリカ人が導入したんだよ。

戦前から日本で野球は大人気だったぞ。日米和親条約のすぐ後には子供たちに教え始めてたし、戦中には米軍捕虜に強制して試合させたりもした。戦後は和解の道具として使われて、サンフランシスコ・シールズの遠征興行では全試合で両国の国旗を同じ高さで掲げたんだ。

Baseball was big in Japan already pre-WW2. Right after the Treaty of Kanazawa, someone started teaching kids in Japan about baseball. During WW2, Japan forced US PoWs to play baseball against them. After WW2, America used it as a tool for reconciliation. The SF Seals did an exhibition tour, and the US ran both flags at equal heights next to each other at all games.

1934年にはベーブ・ルースも来日ツアーをしてて、それが読売ジャイアンツの創設やプロリーグ発足のきっかけになったんじゃなかったっけ。

I think Babe Ruth even toured Japan in 1934 and it spurred the creation of the Yomiuri Giants and establishment of professional leagues in general.

College baseball & industrial league basebal was already very popular in Japan in the 1900s. The inaugural National High School Baseball Championship (Summer Koshien) was held in 1915, and 108 editions have been staged since then. Its first pro teams were founded in the 1920s , but its first successful league, the Japanese Professional Baseball League , and teams were not founded until 1936 .

1907年の「親善」遠征で、シカゴ大学が日本の最高峰だった早稲田をボコボコにしてから、日本人は野球にガチになったんだよ。

Japan got super serious about the game after the University Of Chicago Maroons mollywhopped their best college team Waseda in a "friendly" exhibition series in 1907.
