The squeeze, coming right after the catcher had to “recuperate” was fun to watch. If the catcher had not made a play up towards the ball there’s a good chance he could have taken the throw and made a tag.

This game was a back and forth match with a lot of drama. Koshien is one of the most important events in Japan. Hundreds of thousands of people fill up the 47,000 seat koshien stadium during the 2 weeks the tournament is going on and almost the entire country watches from home or at work. Is so popular that they kick out the Hanshin Tigers, one of the most popular NPB teams, from their home Koshien stadium to run it. Doing well at Koshien makes you a household name and every Japanese superstar made their name in this tournament there in some way.

There are knockout qualifying tournaments all across Japan’s 47 prefectures. Win your regional tournament, and you earn a spot at Koshien. There are 49 teams at Summer Koshien rather than 47 because Hokkaido and Tokyo have so many participating schools. Yeah! Ichiro actually spent three days coaching Chiben Wakayama back in December 2020. And funny enough, they went on to win Summer Koshien the very next year in 2021!

That 8th inning was thrilling. Kendai Takasaki took the lead at the top of the inning through a 2-run homer. However, a lead-off hit-by-pitch at the bottom of the inning proved vital for Chiben Wakayama, as they’d eventually tie the game on a well executed squeeze play and then take the lead on a wild pitch. Chiben Wakayama capture their 4th Summer Koshien title.
