I think it's going to be very difficult. The fact that every single World Cup final team has been European or South American is no coincidence. The level of competition continentally brings everyone up together. That's precisely why the Prem is succeeding, because the entire league has been made strong. Africa is on the come up precisely because every team is becoming capable, it's not Morocco or Cameroon out there alone hoping to play with the big dogs.
I think it's near impossible for Japan to come into that level alone. Korea, China, Iraq, Australia. They all need to hit the come up and be capable of presenting a consistent challenge to European and South American teams. I also think J-League, K-League and all that need to raise their game as well to be able to put real resources and development into their youth. Otherwise, I just can't see it happening.
I think only Morocco outside Europe/South America has pretty good changes of winning World Cup. And it is simply because they can recruit many talented players who were trained in European academies since the beginning.
Whenever they recruit someone like Bouaddi it becomes easier next time.
Speaking as a Japanese person, it’s realistic but by the looks of it unlikely. I wouldn’t bank on it unless some things change
Japan now have great football infrastructure and a country that really cares about the sport
Their national team is now less reliant on one super star like they have been in the past with the likes of Kagawa, Honda or Shunsukue Nakamura and are now producing steady talent that consistently play in big European competitions
However, their mindset really needs to change. They still play like they’re inferior to the big teams despite in some cases even being better player for player. Even though this worked against Spain and Germany in 2022, these were moreso miracles rather than well played games, and everyone forgets they only had to beat Spain because they lost to Costa Rica. In 2026 they went 1-0 up against Brazil and sat back for 60 minutes expecting them not to be able to create chances. Moriyasu’s Japan feels very much like Southgate’s England
They also don’t even do that well against smaller teams. They haven’t won the Asian cup in ages
Kagawa is so underrated as a bvb fan
I think the biggest variable to consider is also just how young the Japanese professional football league is compared to peers. Considering 20 years ago, it was unheard of to see a Japanese player in Europe (bar Nakata), Japanese football has come a long way. Along with the mindset changing, I do think the physicality aspect may need to be factored in. We seem to be very good against ball playing sides but definitely still struggle against larger more physical opponents.
They need to win two Asian Cup and reach the quarter-finals in the World Cup . If they can do this, I think the goal in 2050 is realistic.
It's the year 28161610 and Japan has just lost to North Eswatini in the 90th minute after blowing off their 2-0 lead
In the qualifiers? Wouldn't the World Cup be in 281612?
Nope. 281610 is correct. At every century wc will be held at the year ending with 10.
You're right. I messed that one up. I'm going to feel so embarrassed in 281610.
Chill mate. Didn't want to embarrass you or anything. We are just some football fans doing some banter. That's all.
Yeah.
To all the people saying no: 25 years is a whole lot of time. Japan has been improving and doing great… also there could be major wars that devastate Europe and South America.
But seriously 25 years is a lot of time and you never know. There could be some brilliant players who are 2 years old. They could also get a lucky path and play against a better team near the end that makes a mistake or has a bad day.
I wouldn’t bet on it though.
It's not as long as it sounds. 7 World Cup total, even top teams can fail to "win one of the next 7 World Cups". So even if they got to that top tier today it would be no guarantee and they still have a long way to go to that.
Yeah that's the correct answer. The world cup is extremely difficult to win. Brazil haven't won it in 24 years. Italy haven't won it in 20 years. Germany haven't won it in 12 years. England in 60 years. Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands have never won it. You'd have to imagine many of these teams will win one before Japan does.
And you also have to factor in the other rising powers and sleeping giants besides Japan. Morocco, Mexico, Poland, Russia plus fellow Asian teams like South Korea
I also wouldn't bet on it, bu football can change very quickly.
25 years ago Hungary, Russia, Sweden had all a better history record than Spain in the world cup, or at the very least it was comparable.
25 years ago Italy was powerhouse.
25 years ago man city and psg were nothing.
Yeah that length of time has too many variables where the seemingly impossible can become possible. But if any countries outside of Europe or South America have a shot I would first place money on Morocco and if it’s from Asia I would bet on Japan.
It’s definitely not the best example but Leicester City won the premier league. Although they had more of a shot than Japan does for the World Cup, sometimes upsets happen. Enough upsets in a knockout tournament to win though makes it hard to be anything but skeptical though.
I mean, you just need some luck, honestly.
Greece won an euro title.
Same goes for denmark.
The world cup is a bit harder, but mainly because I think Japan (and asian countries in general) lack that star-power almost all the other "big-medium nations" have. South Korea had son for a while, but that's it.
Lol yeah better hope for those major wars cuz otherwise...
Did you really say Japan might win if Europe and South America are destroyed by War 😭
Also, there arent gonna be as many generational footballers in japan, just because they dont have a football culture
In South America and Europe, waaaay more kids grow up playing football in their free time and in clubs
Japan doesn’t have a football culture? Talking absolute nonsense there.
Compared to European and South American nations, no.
It's getting way more competitive, as many nations, not just Japan, are building up decently strong national teams, but winning the whole thing requires an even higher level. Belgium and Croatia, whom Japan was "unlucky to run into", have never won the World Cup either.
I'm Japanese and I say no.
Our development is very good. We develop players that can play in the top leagues in the world, however we don't have kids that play all day on the street trying to lift their family and neighborhood out of poverty.
Japanese players can compete with anyone on a technical level because its drilled into them from a young age.
We cannot compete on an individual level with world class players that have the hunger and creativity you get from playing in an unstructured environment.
As a result Japan does well on the World stage in terms of tactics and organization. They can cause problems for any of the top teams any given game but sometimes beyond tactics, beyond formations there are 1 v 1 moments where a robotic player that's flawless in terms of technique cannot compete with a kid that grew up playing with no shoes in the street that had to scratch and claw for every scrap.
Japan has mastered the Science of football but will always fall behind in the art of football
The difference in my point of view between Japan and against the World Champions and Dark Horses is the mentality on going out to play
Japan against Brazil the moment they were 1-0 up , they were playing not to lose rather than going for the 2-0
Every team that goes to win the world cup will always try to go for the 2-0 and be as intimidating as possible
Japan for me lose the game the moment they let Brazil have the ball and let them do their game.
Spain won the world cup dominantly because they never let the opposition play their game and while it is true a golden generation is also important , they capitalize on their x2 generations compare to other countries who could not
I agree with you 100% about the Brazil game. They played really well up until the moment they scored and immediately dropped back for 3/4s of the game. I think that Belgium game still haunts Japan and they over compensate for it now. The difference is the team is way stronger than they were in 2018 and they don't need to park the bus for that long. They could have played with Brazil a bit longer and maybe dropped back for the last 20 minutes if they were still ahead. Oh well nothing you can do about it now
As poetic as that sounds, the most successful football nations of the modern era aren't exactly poverty stricken and a lot of the most successful players are academy grown.
In Spain, while not a top economical super power, kids don't play football to get out of the hood, and look at the results. Odd generalisation
This is a fantastic analysis and I enjoy this perspective, as I believe it applies to my country as well. There appears to be no greater internal motivation than escaping poverty and trauma. The psychological impact it has on development is MASSIVE and it’s not something that can be taught or acquired by any other means. Where I’ll push back a little though is that I believe those populations of people still exist everywhere, including Japan - it’s just much, much less prevalent (which goes towards your point).
It's true there are poor areas everywhere, the difference is football is not the number 1 sport in Japan and you don't have kids on the street playing all day.
This is purely anecdotal but I think Japanese parents would rather their kids study and get an education to improve their standing and not play sports.
At the end of the day this is just my opinion and hopefully I'm wrong and Japan can make a run one of these years
Obviously the answer is crashing the economy, unemployment goes up, then you’ll have more impoverished kids playing all day to lift their family out of poverty
Basically this, like Pablo Aimar said training gives you structure and tactics, playing after hours with friends and less rules, the creativity.
Culturaly speaking, Japan is a really structure society and that is their strength and their weakness. Maybe they'll find a way of making it less of a weakness, but IDK if it's possible.
They have the best chance outside Europe and South America alongside Morocco
IDK, i feel like morocco, senegal and egypt are all much better than japan. They were incredibly competitive against top teams in the world, while Japan got dominated by the worst brazil side since the 50s...
South Korea?
Japan are miles ahead of SK, and Japan still are nowhere near touching distance of the best teams.
Currently perhaps but South Korea before this wc was better I'd say
I’m not talking match results I’m talking player development. Goalkeeper in particular is super important and they now have a starting premier league goalkeeper. That’s a big step.
Wasn't impressed by them at the WC
Wasn't impressed by Japan in this wc either, it's more about the previous WCs
Why put Japan ahead of Mexico?
Are you joking right?
Why would you think so? Mexico has been better in world cups and higher in current ranking.
Ranking is kind of meaningless
But not more meaningless than any evidence you can find to support a claim over this topic.
Not really. Using your own comment as an example, the other metric you used is better.
Not really. For example Morocco.
Tbf i also dont think japan is close to winning a world cup lol, but mexico while consistent at clearing the group stage always crumbles against any decent team, and im not impressed by this generation of players
I’m not saying Mexico is close, but they are slightly closer than Japan if we are being objective. They beat France and Germany in group. They were tough meat for Italy, Argentina and Netherlands. I don’t think Japan could pass any Mexico’s opponents when they were knocked out. The only shame was the US, but the US is always unpredictable and was good back then.
I mean japan shit the bed vs brazil, but i dont think mexico beating 2010s france that got eliminated with 1 point is a huge flex and neither is last place germany, but at least they had recognizable names
Because Mexico are shit away from the Azteca
Not really. They were more like a slightly better Japan when not at home. They made to the knock out stage from 1994 to 2018 consecutively. None of these were held in Mexico. While being able to face-off world champions is still exciting to Japan, to Mexico it is expected. Basically Japan has just become Mexico but not as consistent yet.
its almost impossible to speculate regarding this matter , it is extremely tough to win a world cup even by a top team , netherlands should have won atleast 1 or 2 by now
Its possible, but extremely difficult, Look at Netherlands and Portugal for example, theyve had Goats and generational talents and cant get over the line
Whatever you’re smoking, I’d love some of that
By then the global sport will be handball much to their chagrin
They would need a culture of generating world class players every year.
Their domestic league needs to improve.
They need to let their young players go to Europe from a young age to develop.
I would say it's unrealistic as things stand.
Short answer: no.
Long answer: it is not.
It’s hard to say, but probably not. Winning the World Cup is incredibly difficult, and only a tiny handful of teams have a realistic chance every year. 2050 is far enough away Japan will have entirely new generations of players, so I suppose there is a chance if they continue developing talent they might be contenders by then, but keep in mind all of the perennial powers will also be developing talent, and they have already established the have the development system to produce World Cup winning talent.
So it’s certainly possible, but calling it realistic is a bit of stretch given soccer isn’t even the most popular sport in Japan
The stat that sums it up: they've reached the knockouts in five of the last seven World Cups and still haven't won a single knockout game. Two of those exits came deep in stoppage time too, Chadli's counter in the 94th minute in 2018 and Martinelli's winner against Brazil this summer.
That looks less like mindset and more like game management and bench depth. When they're ahead late, they don't have the players to slow the game down or kill it off.
Talent isn't the gap anymore. They came from 2-0 down to beat Brazil 3-2 in Tokyo last October, their first ever win over them, and they've beaten Germany and Spain at a World Cup.
The 2050 target comes from the JFA's 2005 pledge to host and win the World Cup by then. Their first World Cup was only 1998, so the progress in one generation is huge. Winning it is still a stretch, but a first quarter final would be the real sign they're on track.
