Under investment in the squads, and a salary cap designed to keep the lowest club within arms reach of the premiership at all times.
The salary cap is not why Newcastle sold off its players. They needed money, it’s not like they had more to spend and were stopped by the salary cap.
Having UAE pay Melb City more for its players so it can win the league while no watches and then go on and play well Asian champions league while no one watches is really not what the A league needs.
Another reason why the jets lost players was the agent having a hissy fit when the jets management stopped signing all his players
You’re correct. The Jets squad management has been shite since Maverick came in. However, I was speaking more generally across the ALM.
Yeah fair, I’m not even disagreeing that the salary cap does hold us back in Asia.
I just think being good in Asia gives us nothing - getting people out to watch Aleague games is the whole ball game. Asia means nothing
Unfortunate, because doing well in Asia pays well
Shite??? We won the league in the first season, halved the losses….crazy talk
Salary cap keeping the league fairer, also most good squads that win the league get stripped for parts in the offseason (Jets)
If the jets had Bayliss, natta and even Rose I think the squad isn't getting pumped as much
Our second choice right back is literally playing CB. Great finish on the OG tho
Absolutely dreaming. Rose is still missing sitters, just on the other side of the world now
He pressed and put teams under pressure which this team is missing
More money in other leagues so their players are better
The salary cap is a double-edged sword. Keeps the competition relatively competitive, but also means that teams generally can’t compete with the bigger spenders in other leagues.
But related note: there’s some good football to watch in some of these other leagues. I can’t speak for Aus, but in NZ we get J-League games on YouTube for free and there’s some great stuff in there, especially if you enjoy the technical football at which Japanese players often excel.
When WSW won the ACL, the financial gulf between us and Al Hilal was already enormous, it’s now gotten exponentially bigger to the point it’s beyond impossible to compete with
Because the A-league has no money.. other Asian countries have money to burn
Other than the financial investment others have mentioned, we have a 12 team comp with an unusually long off season. So we play fewer games in our league compared to other Asian comps, even those of comparable size like South Korea. Our teams also aren't really playing for like 6 months right before the ACLE and ACL2 start, so we're coming against teams who are in form because their seasons have been going for a bit.
On the Jets specifically, we play quality football but we are definitely punching above our weight in the A-league let alone the ACLE. Plus we have 5 J1 teams, 2 CSL teams and Johor who are no push overs. We would've been lucky to get a point across those 8 games anyway.
Personally, I really like Newcastle Jets’ approach. They’re an attacking team that builds from the back, plays out from their goalkeeper, uses positional play, etc.
Oh I do too, our style of play and our attitude as well are so good to watch. But it has it's risks in fatigue management with such a small squad and conceding goals which we've seen for the last 12ish months. No conplaints from me tho, I think we're playing well all things considered
Squad is smaller than other leagues who have 30+ players, A-league has 23-26 and reserves are not in season.
Limit on foreign players still in effect in A-league where at has been dropped in other leagues in line with AFC changes.
Finances. A-league spends the amount on 1 team that the bigger clubs in ACLE will spend on on 2 or 3 players of their squad which means better quality Visa players. eg Baily Wright at Lion Sailors is a player that normally would have played in the A-league
It also hurt A-league because the younger players are getting poached to go overseas (Jovanovic, Dukuly, Clayton Taylor, Mark Natta, Eli Adams, Lachlan Bayliss, Reno Piscopo who went Indonesia of all places just as examples of players that normally would have stayed in A-league are now leaving the A-league as its a cheap market for decent players in the lower leagues of Europe for clubs competing in Asia) its testing the depth of a league that only has 10 professional clubs. The Australian ladder has created a situation unless you are in the pro teams its difficult to get that overseas move, and then there are players in NPL that genuinely should be pro but make more money playing semi pro and working a profession which lowers the quality of squads in the A-league.
Empty stadiums is usually because lack of promotion, poor timing and apathy over the years in Asia. Its a big burden for A-league team because its extra cost to play in the tournament unless they make a deep run which usually comes at the expense of the domestic league. We are not the only ones K-league teams are also notorious for having low crowds.
So there is a lot there that hinders the A-league teams. There is probably more, but its already enough obstacles that hurt any team from being competitive.
Bayliss went to us but I get your point. Double-edged sword with young players getting an opportunity but heading overseas after dominating the A-League for a season or 2.
FA and PFA are the main reasons the foreign player rules won't be relaxed
And 100% shouldn't be relaxed. The model is to sell the younger players overseas.
But need to point a reference here Johor has like 5 domestic players. Lions City Sailors more than half the squad are foreign players.
If we went prior to the visa changes our teams were competitive. But since the change bigger ASEAN clubs have taken full advantage at the cost of their domestic players. But it makes ir harder for A-league to compete
I would like to see an exception made for OFC Players but agree otherwise
Have you ever heard of this thing called “money”?
Yes, but that’s not always the case. Just look at the Europe League last year with Bodø/Glimt. Cienciano scored six goals against Botafogo (Brazil) in Copa Libertadores, and Mexican teams always beat MLS clubs, even when they’re stacked with star players.
?
Terrible example. The Mexican league is one of the wealthiest leagues outside of Europe.
I’m Mexican, and Toluca (my team) beat most MLS teams with a squad full of Mexican players, injured players, and foreign players who aren’t international stars like the ones in MLS.
Mexico has 133 million people and football is the #1 sport in Mexico, Australia has a population of 28 million, and soccer is the 4th or 5th sport at a national competition level even if it's got the highest junior participation.
I think you can see progress in the jets. Keep in mind home and away too. Smashed in Japan. Gave Gamba a decent game who are flying. And gave Shanghai a good game and arguably should have got more out of it. Shanghais #21 also for example was playing every game for espanyol only 2 years ago. And he's still young ish. Big difference to Joe Lolley who was playing championship not every game 5 years ish ago.
Was pretty happy as a supporter last night. 3rd goal killed us after a "not foul" committed by Grant on said #21. We were in it from probably the 30th min until the 4th goal went in.
I also think if we were halfway through our season or at the end of our season we jag a draw or 2 or maybe a win from our 4 games.
>Gave Gamba a decent game who are flying.
We are 16th in the league, we are anything but flying. We're improving at least a bit across the last two weeks, and we're doing okay in the Champions League, but the latter almost feels more based on luck than anything else, given our lack of player rotation (which just got a player injured). This is a managerial problem, we have the options, he just won't use them at the times that he really ought to.
One question: the other day I was looking at Nagoya Grampus’s tactical stats and noticed they have some pretty good numbers, but they’re quite low in the table. Do they actually play good football?
I've only watched them twice this season, but my impression of them from that and how they played in the Vision League is that they're quite open, play progressive football that's generally quite nice to watch, but aren't great defensively, so you can get them the other way. Quite similar to how Consadole Sapporo played around 2023-2024 under Milhailo Petrovic too, so it's very much down to managerial choices.
I think they've underperformed a touch so far this season, and will slowly gravitate towards more like 8th or so as the season progresses, especially if other clubs (in particular ACL competitors) start having issues with injury and lack of player rotation.
Gamba are flying
Historically is 3 times, so it’s not frequent. And Shanghai isn’t just any Chinese team, they are loaded
First week watching the league?
Stadiums are empty everywhere for Champions League. Not just here
Pretty much
Yep AFC is far more interested in short term cash grabs and protecting sponsors than actually growing the ACL into something popular with fans.
ACL games have been historically poorly attended and AFC's constant selling out to Saudi and Middle Eastern interests doesn't help. Furthermore, allegedly the AFC doesn't even give clubs enough travel budget to make the enourmous trips so clubs often lose money travelling to away games. If AFC increased travel budgets and/or gave clubs extra prize money to market ACL matches than I could see the competition grabbing more traction outside of finals.
Why should Aussies, Koreans or Japanese be interested in the ACL when finals games are in Saudi anyway and every home game sees your clubs stadium have every single logo covered in black tape and tarps to prevent conflict of interest from sponsors that don't even do business in your home country.
Why should Aussies, Koreans or Japanese be interested in the ACL when finals games are in Saudi anyway and every home game sees your clubs stadium have every single logo covered in black tape and tarps to prevent conflict of interest from sponsors that don't even do business in your home country.
The attendances sucked long before the Saudi deal and I don't think the restrictive marketing rights thing is what keeps people away.
Midweek kick-offs, a lack of interest in Asia (national non-footballing problem), ticket prices and poor promotion seem to be the more relevant factors for us.
There were some good attendances in the early years. Sydney got 20k plus for a group match against Urawa Reds.
Asia should be the benchmark for the A-League to see how it is developing as a competition. But clubs don't give a rats, they are essentially punished by the cap for taking part in it (you need a deeper squad to enable team rotation, but are working under the same cap as non-ACL participants), our season doesn't even start until halfway through the league phase, and the roulette nature of the league means experience dealing with Asian competition doesn't build up.
The way things are designed now, it's basically purpose built to underperform in Asia. But at the moment it's just one embarrassment after another. Why would fans take interest in it?
Time of year isn’t great for A-Liga teams either.
The Champions League starts before our season while other top nations are in season
Salary cap means we can't spend money on foreign players compared to the top teams
Because governments of other countries have actively invested in football and come up with strategies to improve their leagues and national teams.
Australia hasn’t and as a result we have been left behind. Even if we started this now it would be about 10 years before we have an a league team win the AFC Elite.
The other major issue is that we’re only 3 games into our domestic season while they are at least half way through. Makes a big difference in terms of match fitness etc, this is what the Jets were getting flogged 7-2 and now are only getting beat 4-2.
Other countries have more money to throw around on players and unless by some stroke of luck a competitive A League team gets into the AFC league one season and gets good results, by the next season that team has been pretty much decimated by losing players and replacing them with youth or inferior imports.
ALeague fans: playing the same teams over and over 3 times a season with no tension is boooooring
Also Aleague fans: knockout football against new opposition? ... no thanks
Besides Jap and SK domestic players always being better than Aus domestic players, the long off season, salary cap, succèsful a-league teams having their players poached by overseas clubs… the AFC removing the 5+1 foreigner quota has also meant that now SE countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indo are all of a sudden strong due to having starting lineups consisting of entirely Euro or Sth American players (and the random Aussie)
Salary cap - If there was no salary cap then our bigger clubs may go OK. Melbourne City went OK last season AND they were capped. Newcastle are a good squad, but we’re never going to be dominating in ACL elite.
Money and talent. A league is full of 18 year olds and Asia well the top Asian teams is full of men.
We should feel somewhat lucky we aren't playing against oil money teams or we'd get thrashed
Slow starters in ACL because we start ALM months after the opposition start their leagues.
Salary cap.
Squad limitations.
Best players from previous season poached.
Money is an issue but I also believe that since switching to a league stage format the acl has been quite rigged against us.
I think the main issue this season is the quality of our foreigners and Aussies. Squads are much younger so expect them to make mistakes. Jets lost 5 key players from their title winning team which I think has hurt them. Also, you could question some of Millsy tactics in different parts of the game. Adelaide and victory squads aren’t any better for the ACL 2 and they’re getting beat by smaller Asian nations that can spend $$$ on quality foreigners. It will be a while until we can see the feats of Adelaide Utd, Wanderers or Mariners in these tournaments
Could be all day going through reasons why. The floor in Asia has improved 10 fold under Infantino. The money being thrown around East Asian is crazy meanwhile the A-League has just stood there and watched it happen. The standard of Foreign player coming into the league is diabolical. With regards Newcastle Jets they signed two League One players and one who spent most his career in the foot of the Scottish league who are way past it. They dont offer enough quality to make up the difference in ACL matches. The team they played Shanghai Port signed their Brazilian striker for like €850k. Which is well within reason. A- league clubs need more investment and more effort in moving the youth to Europe and MLS with better fees and sell on clauses which will happen with the youth being successful like Lucas Herrington
The A-League has so much potential. We seen the Australia Cup last month with 29k in attendance. There is interest there proving they stop gatekeeping who gets to play in the top flight.Australia was made up by immigrants like most countries. Blocking ethnic clubs is what holds the growth of the league back. Until systematic changes happens things will only get worse as the league falls down the coefficientcy rankings.
Let's not even consider Japan, Korea, the Middle East etc...there are teams in SE Asia that have players on salaries that eclipse what an A League team spends on 80% of their roster.
JDT, Lion City Sailors, Persija Jakarta, Buriram, Cong An Hanoi, heck even the likes of Kuching FC, have massive budgets and no salary cap. It helps that their populations are more football crazy so huge investment comes in.
Lion City Sailors were average during the Home United days but their owner is a mega rich entrepreneur and has transformed the club. They regularly buy talent from Europe in their prime. Until there's that ROI for wealthy investors in Australia and less red tape around a salary cap (both very difficult) Australia will struggle in these club comps
Money
All of Asia are funding their leagues better than us. Its shameful.
As others have said - a lot less money. Just look at transfermrkt valuations for the various clubs.
And a lot less money in AL with lower salary cap, and the cut of exempt players (not that anyone is spending much these days).
But also the changes to the ACLE format in particular mean this year 5 Japanese clubs, 3 Korean who are harder to beat.
Do you guys generally feel like it's a good thing for your teams to compete in these comps? All three teams looked cooked on the weekend, and they had to back it up with games again this mid week. Even if they dont advance, acle games continue into Jan/Feb for Newcastle. Even in Euro leagues, I've always thought CL is a bit of a handicap on the bigger teams. But the money and prestige is too good, and theyre not bound by salary caps to build teams to compete in Europe. But for us. The travel is gruelling. There's no additional salary cap allowances to build good teams let alone getting pillaged at the end of the season. So most successful team will likely struggle domestically the following season as well as getting done in Asia. Except for the kiwi teams. There's every chance Auckland could go back to back in successive years if they dont ever have to play ACL.
