Japanese work culture is insanely toxic. I worked for a Japanese company for a short period of time and it was borderline slave labor.
To me it sounds like a face-saving announcement. Like they gave everyone a day to themselves but are calling it “individual workouts” so it doesn’t appear they are slacking.
同意。
Agreed
RIP
I know Japanese work culture is vastly different than in the west, but everyone should've been allowed to go home after the body was discovered. I just hope it wasn't a teammate who found him.
RIP
It happened at their dorm where they live. It says they were moved to other accommodations and it was voluntary practice so basically do what you need to do.
Sometimes the best thing is to just stay in a semi normal routine.
Can’t let yourself get into a hole
That’s kinda what I was thinking. I’ve had coworkers show up to work within a day or two after their spouse died, and not because it was a shitty job making them come in. They just wanted some normalcy.
The last thing you need is to be left alone in a bad place as your only option.
For many, it's best to take a day to get your brain organized then just go back to normal and process during the quiet moments. That forces you to take the time that you actually need instead of just spiraling from feeling everything all at once for hours on end.
My guess is that they didn’t fully cancel because guys were already at the facility. His body was discovered at 7:45 am.
no such thing as canceling and letting people go home?
I guess it would depend on what "individual workouts" mean. I can see the team wanting to be around each other to process the grief
If they actually made them workout, that's evil
The Japanese was 自主練習, which basically means “self-directed practice.” Functionally, it means no one made any one do anything, and players were free to do whatever they wanted: take some swings, do some laps, play some catch, or just go home. I can’t say for certain in this specific case, but typically such workouts are completely optional.
There was a practice game scheduled for the minor league team Nogami was assigned to, but that was completely canceled. The major team still has one game left to play, so the individual workouts was likely so the players could keep in game shape if they so wanted.
Such a tragedy.

So they didn’t even cancel work for the death of a teammate?
