I thought MLB players get great healthcare per MLB cba and MLBPA
Can confirm, MLB players have great healthcare. Seen it up front.
Would the high school and college players getting Tommy John have to ride along with the “kid on parents insurance” provision?
If they are injured while playing or practicing I think the college's insurance covers them
Otherwise yes they'd be on their parent's insurance if their parent's have insurance
Pitched in college, the NCAA requires the player’s healthcare coverage to have a minimum of $90k in coverage, at which threshold the NCAA has a ‘catastrophic injury insurance program’ that they can cover the rest of the costs from as secondary coverage (within 24 months of the initial injury)
In Japan, you don't really have to worry about being on your parent's insurance, because we have National Insurance, and virtually everybody in Japan is covered by National Insurance. If you can't afford insurance premiums, you can pay almost nothing simply by applying at a Kuyakusho (District Govern't Office) for a waiver or premium reduction.
Municipal subsidies make Health Insurance free for minors in many areas, and certainly for any minor for whom their parents couldn't afford it (or if they are a ward of the State).
So the idea of a child being "on their parent's insurance" is a foreign concept to Japan. Kids are on National Health Insurance, just like 99.999% of the rest of the country. Employer based health insurance is not really a thing.
THere IS Private insurance but it's generally supplemental. For example, "Cancer insurance" where you pay insurance premiums and then the insurance provides supplemental benefits for expensive cancer treatments if needed is a type of private insurance.
BUt relatively few people have private insurance in Japan.
The whole “go fund me to pay for basic medical expenses” genre is bleak enough that I’m not inclined to find out how many people are trying to pay for Tommy John surgery through crowdfunding
I’ve also had a long standing question about if anybody ever tears their UCL without playing a sport and if that’s noticeable to them when it happens
standard or experimental cancer treatments cause if we get insurance the money itself is a is a death sentence. to the tune fo hundreds of thousands is not millions of USD.
The price of the procedure has never been an issue with Tommy John surgery
I mean MLB teams cover the costs as well. It's quite literally a worker's compensation case. Pretty much if any player gets hurt, the team covers it.
Wait is it not covered by the team in the US? I always thought it was
It is. Players don’t pay for medical treatments and are entitled to third party second opinions. Not sure who is regularly getting Tommy John surgery besides athletes.
More than 1/2 of Tommy John surgeries in the US are being performed on 15-19 year olds. Many of them are likely in a major league team’s system, but plenty are in high school. Idk if one’s parent’s insurance plan covers UCL surgery or not, but there are plenty of kids in that position.
No shit. For baseball players a UCL tear is a work-related injury. The team covers all of it in MLB, too, because if they didn't the players could sue them for it.

I’m being tickled at the idea of a Japanese man in love with MLB, so he names his son Tohmie John.
But you gotta do the voice.
Watch out dodgers prospect Tomī-Jon Watanabe is gonna be here in 20 years lol
You absolutely fucking do not have to do a voice
It would go a little… like this.
What voice 🤨
You don’t have to do a voice.
Shunpeita Yamashita and Hiroya Miyagi of the Orix Buffaloes in NPB underwent hybrid Tommy John surgery in the US in May. The procedure was reportedly not covered by insurance and cost around $190,000.
Orix reportedly covered the cost of the surgery itself. However, I heard that Miyagi was asked to pay out of pocket for part of the travel and accommodation expenses, which amounted to several million yen, leading to a dispute with the team.
190,000 dollars or Yen?
Dollars. OP's comment and title are very confusing taken together, so I went to look at the article. The issue is that it's cheap in Japan and the team pays for everything. But in this case the player did it in US.

I am pretty sure if there is any significant financial cost, A lot of it is tried in the extensive physical threapy.
I got a $400 bill from Quest Diagnostics for a routine lab work my doctor ordered as part of my annual checkup, which my supposed-to-be top-tier PPO declined to cover. I’m already stressed out just thinking about the battle I have to go through with the doctor’s, lab, and the insurance company.
It's almost like healthcare in other countries may actually be less of a financial burden than in the United States.

should tax payers fund foreign athletes choosing to have elective surgery in the US?
That is clearly not their point
then how is their point relevant to the article?
It's not, reddit is just hyper obsessed with US politics and even in spaces where you try to escape it, you can't.
Reddit is also hyper focused about randomly talking about tax-payer funded healthcare systems in a conversation that had nothing to do with them.
Well yeah I would argue critiquing US politics and it's broken healthcare system is one in the same. The US elected a man who has "concepts of a plan" regarding healthcare lol.
I can’t read the full article as I don’t know Japanese but the headline is talking about insurance and procedure cost. You bringing up tax-payer funded healthcare are the one being irrelevant to the article as Japan doesn’t even have a single-payer healthcare system. Why are you asking someone talking about Japan vs the US healthcare systems an irrelevant question about taxpayer funded healthcare?
With universal healthcare plus private insurance as supplementry, the same qualified surgeons in Japan who work even more hours don't make anywhere as ridiculous money as in the States. Fee schedules are strictly regulated without all the middlemen.
Although, getting treatment and appointment can be difficult as hell. I guess same goes for in the US unless you got the riches.
Man, if you think doctors make ridiculous money, you should see hospital and insurance executives
Hence middlemen
Tbh, even bigwigs in Japanese healthcare don't make nearly the bucks that American health care peope do. Most hospitals in Japan are publicly owned, like almost 70%, and private hospitals operate on relatively low margins due to competition from public hosptials.
Hopsital executives making over 100M JPY (around $600k USD) are extremely rare in Japan, especially since HMOs are not a thing (since National Health Insurance makes networked insurance not a thing in Japan).
Health Insurance Executives, at least as you might think of health insurance int he US, doesn't exist in Japan, as Japan has 99.999% primary health insurance coverage over its population with its National health insurance program.
Some types of purely supplemental health insurance private programs exist, such as "Cancer Insurance" where you pay a premium in exchange for out of pocket cost coverage in instances of cancer treatments or other specific risk-reduction measures. But these aren't really "private health insurance" programs per se, and in terms of the Japaense market for them, they are miniscule compared to US private health insurance.
Healthcare is not anywhere near as lucrative in Japan as it is in the US.
The procedure itself costs around ¥100,000 ($630)
Fuck me gently with a chainsaw.
And then your trip to the ER for the chainsaw incident will cost way more than $630.

Pretty sure MLB teams cover the costs for their players too
