ああ、これは知らなかった。どんな状況でもひどい話だけど、キャリアのハイライトになるはずだった日に起きたってのが余計に辛いな。

Oh man, I hadn't heard about this. Obviously it's a terrible situation no matter what, but being on a day what should be his career highlight is even worse.

俺のチームの選手、オスナが審判をこんなひどい状態にしたってのもあるけど、彼の初の1軍での試合でこんなことになったって事実に、ただただ悲しくなるね。
今は家族からのメッセージが聞きたいことのすべてだとは分かってるけど、川上さんの家族がNPB、ヤクルト、あるいはオスナによって経済的に支援されてることを願うばかりだよ。彼はマイナーリーグの審判としてそんなにお金を稼いでたわけじゃないだろうし、医療費も安くはないからさ。
それに、NPBには業務中の事故の場合に審判やその家族を補償するような労働保険を提供してほしいんだ。NPBの審判たちはNPBの従業員じゃなくて、NPBと契約してサービスを提供する事業運営者なんだよね。だから日本の法的な労働者の定義には当てはまらないし、政府が義務付けてる労働者向けの労働保険に加入する資格がない。これが試合中に審判が遭った初の重大な事故だとは分かってるけど、NPBはこの事故の後まで審判に保護具の着用を義務付けていなかったんだ。NPBは、川上さんの現在の状態に寄与した彼らの過失を償うために、あらゆることをすべきだ。

Besides the fact that one of the players on my team, Osuna, put the ump in this horrible state, him getting put into the state on his first big league game assignment makes me so sad about all of this.
I know the message from his family should be all I want to hear about him right now, but I just hope that Kawakami's family is being financially taken care of by NPB or Yakult or Osuna because he sure didn't make any money being a minor league ump and all of the medical expenses aren't cheap. Also, I really want NPB to provide some kind of labor insurance that will require them to compensate the umps and their families in cases of job-related accidents. All of the NPB umps are not employees of NPB but business operators that have signed a contract with NPB to provide their services, which put them outside of the legal definition of workers in Japan and make them illegible to sign up for government-mandated labor insurance for workers. I know this is the first serious accident suffered by an ump during a game, but NPB didn't require the umps to wear any protective gear until after this accident. NPB should do everything to make up for their negligence which contributed to Kawakami's current condition.

素晴らしいニュースだね。審判に戻りたいなら彼の選択だけど、意識が戻って本当に嬉しいよ。事故からもう半年以上経ったなんて信じられないね。

Great news. If he wants to return to being an umpire, that's his choice, but I'm so glad he's awake. Can't believe it's been over six months since the accident.

デビッド・ライトみたいな引退試合をしてほしいな。金のためじゃなく、心から好きだから審判を続けてほしいんだ。

I'd like to see a David Wright final game type retirement. I don't want him umpiring just for the money but for the love of it.

昏睡状態に陥ってから時々「Umpire Kawakami」で検索してたんだけど、正直、回復するとは思ってなかったんだ！まだ大変そうだから道のりは長いだろうけど、それでも素晴らしいニュースだね。

Have been searching "Umpire Kawakami" from time to time since he fell into a coma, and gotta be honest and say that I didn't expect him to recover! Still sounds like he's having a rough time so the journey is fall from over, but it's great news regardless.

彼は超常的な審判能力を身につけて目覚めたに違いない。ボールとストライクが投じられる前にコールできるだろうね。なぜか常に新しいボールをポケットに持ってるんだ…球場にいない時でさえね。コルクバットは匂いでわかるし。監督も選手も、理由がわからないまま、でもそうするのが当然だと確信して自ら退場するだろうな。

I bet he woke up with supernatural umpiring abilities. He'll be able to call balls and strikes before they're thrown. He'll somehow always have a new ball in his pocket... even when he's not at the ballpark. He'll know a corked bat by its smell. Managers and players will eject themselves, uncertain as to why, but certain that they deserved it.
