It's also not hard to understand why Harris is aggressively pushing his youngsters to the pros. They're the only one's producing lately. Guys like Valencia, Lee, McGonigle, Clark and today, Callahan. Ntm, Jobe, Melton and Montero are nice young arms who've got bright futures. And don't look now, but Briceno just got promoted to AAA, and Ryan & Hope are gonna get here soon. honestly I don't mind.. we try and compete this year but the next years are what we should be preparing for.. Mune is just on a 2 year deal.. we can't lose him.. pitching really needs to improve because so far, the offense is doing good.. but pitching keeps blowing games so definitely needs improvement there.. try to compete this year but we have to accept this isn't their year.. but next consecutive years have to be their year and they need to be a contender..

American scouts, pundits and GMs have always under-rated Japanese hitters starting with Ichiro 25 years ago and until now nothing has changed. Mune is the biggest revelation of their failure to move on from viewing the NPB as some kind of bush league where hitters don't face 'real' pitching - doubly ironic given the number of quality pitchers in MLB who have come over from that league.

Pitching is a lot easier to predict than hitting when it comes to performance translating to MLB. And to be fair, there are certainly star hitters from NPB whose talent did not transfer as well as expected to MLB. Kosuke Fukudome for the Cubs, Yoshi Tsutsugo and currently Masataka Yoshida (5 years, $90 million contract) performed well below expectations. I would not say NPB hitters are underrated, but just that there are a lot of hits and misses.

you bring up some good points. Some Japanese position players haven't adjusted well to MLB for whatever reasons. I think age can be a factor in some cases. While top MLB prospects typically cut their teeth at the MLB level in their early twenties, almost all these Japanese hitters haven't arrived in MLB until age 29/30 when their best years may already be behind them. In Yoshida's case I think only having occasional starts in the outfield and not having regular playing time has had an impact on his confidence and performance - as it can for any player - he was never appropriate for a DH role.

88試合で28本塁打のペースだと、フルシーズンなら52本に達する計算だね。ただ、怪我で2ヶ月間、いや復帰後も数週間は調子を取り戻すのに時間がかかったから、6週間どころじゃないんだよ。52本は控えめな見積もりだと思うけど、残念ながら知る由もないな。

based on his 28 homeruns in 88 games played he would be projected to hit 52 in a full season - but it's more like he missed 2 months - not 6 weeks - because it took a couple of weeks for him to get his timing back after his return from injury. I think 52 is a conservative estimate but we'll sadly never know.
