当時5歳でメイク・ア・ウィッシュを受けた子のきょうだいとして説明するね。この年齢の子って「願い事」を上手に使えないんだよ。その日見たおもちゃのトラックが欲しい、みたいなことになりがちでさ。だから親が本人の興味に合わせて、家族全員で一生の思い出になる体験を計画するのが普通なんだ。本人が直接「村上に会いたい」と言ったわけじゃなくても、野球が好きでそこから特別な思い出作りとしてアレンジされたんだと思うよ。

So, sibling of a Make-A-Wish kid (who was 5 at the time) here. The thing about giving kids this young a wish, is that they're not very good at "using them." Which, granted, sounds awful, but it's not uncommon to see the kids themselves want something like a toy truck they saw earlier that day.
With that in mind, what usually happens is the parents will choose some sort of memorable experience for the kid and their family, that relates to their interests. So while I doubt the four-year old said "I want to meet Murakami," they might have an interest in baseball and the wish grantor/parents worked out the exact experience.
It might seem sad or come off as the parents abusing the wish, but spending the time with family and making substantial, happy, potentially final memories is extremely important to the experience.

Thank you for that explanation. I never considered that element of it but yeah, kids would totally just wish for the first thing they thought of, like a toy or a cookie.
