It’s not, people just want something to be mad about.

You pretty much summed it up

The fastast way to make a nicknam controversial is to ask the internet why it's controversial.

This is the correct answer.

it's not controversial but it's really lazy.

Kind of like you getting triggered over imaginary people being mad?

He didn't lose the gig because of the nickname. He lost it because he was bad at his job.

He was not bad at his job. He had big shoes to fill with an upset fan base. He did not click with the fan base who was extremely critical of everything he did out of anger from losing Benetti.
I’m in the minority and I thought he did an okay job considering. He was quirky and difficult to like at first but in the end he kind of grew on me.
Sad to see him go. If we get Connor McKnight to replace him it will be an absolute snooze fest he is so boring.

He’s great if you like baseball to feel like wrestling

You say that as if getting hyped over a big play is a bad thing

He absolutely was still getting adjusted to announcing baseball. Which is a skill you should learn in the minors.

Best analogy was when ESPN hired Dave O’Brien to call the World Cup on three months notice with no previous soccer experience. To his credit, he gradually improved to be respectable at it, but he started out so badly that it was hard to come back from that.
As a “neutral” I kinda felt bad for the guy, he just didn’t know much of anything about White Sox or the culture around the team. There was a game in late summer of his first season when they showed a scene of someone scooping a Rainbow Cone and he said to Stone something like “oh I bet the green is lime”. I cringed when I heard that. Compare that to Benetti who really showed how much he tried to immerse himself in the culture around the Tigers as soon as he arrived in Detroit.

That part of his didn’t really bug me very much. Him not knowing who Bill Veeck is, or much White Sox history bugged me - and the “radio losers” more. Also, I want to state that Jason’s “wannabe comedian” act trying to make a joke every pitch bugged me too…so I’m not a fan of either of them. But Jason (or maybe it was actually Chris Kamka) would cite stats and do more research than John I noticed. The next PxP guy needs to have that quality I think and use more research/stats than John used.

John Schriffen didn’t lose his job because of that moniker, he was just overall an unremarkable announcer.
“Southside Samurai” isn’t inherently racist, but it is reductive. It reminds me of how Tory Taylor, the Australian punter for the Chicago Bears, was labeled the Crocodile Punter. Clever, but reductive, and he rejected the nickname.
If I, an American, were playing in an international league and they called me the Cowboy Catcher or something, I wouldn’t be offended…but it’s a little silly because there’s nothing “Cowboy”
about me other than being from the USA.

I love it...look at my flair.

Who is losing their job because of that?

Right, like which broadcaster? OP are you able to share your source?

I read this. It’s written in Japanese.

thats not why hes losing his job. looks like gossip

It isn’t. I know Jon got a lot of shit, but that was uncalled for. Even more uncalled for cuz mlb would use it in their highlights

Its not
Some terminally online kids get offended by everything for anyone

It’s not. Just some RWNJ culture war bullshit people were trying to stir up.

It’s… not? I mean it’s not particularly creative but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it

Because white people said it’s racist. I also remember him saying that he talked to Mune about nickname options and i’m pretty sure Mune was fine with it - but again white people said it’s racist

Both things stated were true - white people got offended on behalf of Mune without asking what Mune thought, and John Schriffin did not get his contract renewed. However, the two were true independent of each other and there was no relation between the two at all. Management did not care John used that nickname. But they did care he lacked baseball knowledge and had little chemistry with Steve Stone.

Should be the Shogun of Swat

The Daimyo of the Diamond

Diamond Daimyo is great

Im guessing the Kamakazee kid doesn't have the lore alliteration tends to have. /s

"for calling Munetaka Murakami, a famous Japanese baseball player, “South Side Samurai”."
That's not why his contract is not being renewed. The Sox ditched a fan-favorite broadcaster 3 years ago, Schriffen stepped in as the unwanted stepmom, it really was a tough hill to climb and he really didn't succeed in the challenge.
Now for the nickname, as someone else said, it's a little on the nose. He didn't come up with it, but he did try it out, and it was reported the organization said to not use it. It's more fun when a nickname is earned and organic, like The Big Hurt. The Japanese baseball team is referred to as Samurai Japan, so it's not offensive.
IFFFF I had to guess if anything, perhaps Sox marketing wanted to discourage spotlighting any generic "Japanese-ness" because the ripples of that do lead to racist fan-made and bootleg merch like when Kosuke Fukudome was on the Cubs.

How did the big hurt come about anyway? Never thought about this somehow

Not much of a story other than Hawk gave it to him. But Thomas also came up as a more traditional rookie. And then Hawk also started calling Craig Grebeck 'The Little Hurt'.

That’s a guess if I’ve ever heard one for sure

If you’re speaking on the white Sox former play by play announcer, John Schriffen, he wasn’t losing it because he used that nickname. He’s losing his job because he was terrible at it. I also learned today that he was apparently a real arrogant piece of shit too. Personally, I don’t think that nickname is offensive, but hey, it might be to some others. To each their own.

Murakami already had a cool nickname in Japan. "Murakami-sama" which basically means he's a god of baseball. I don't think South Side Samurai is offensive but it is pretty lazy.

Hadn’t kept up with the Sox or baseball in general in a long time until this past season, but I liked him a lot actually. He was a nice foil to Steve stone and I didn’t understand the immense hate. Yes he was corny but that’s what was likable about him imo

He had gotten a little better over time.
But the best way I can describe it is that he always called games like he was interviewing for his next job - like he was trying to be a national sports broadcaster - not like he was trying to be a great White Sox broadcaster.
This comes as a stark contrast to guys like Hawk, Ed Farmer, Benetti, and Steve Stone, who have been the beloved voices of the White Sox for decades.
Even DJ, who is a cheeseball, or Len Kasper, who was the voice on the other side of town for forever, all sounded engaged and interested in being the voice of the White Sox. They also all have generally interesting things to say about the games they're calling.
Schriffen always sounded like he was trying his best to imitate the generic kind of broadcasting you hear while playing The Show, and he always sounded like he was just trying his best to make catchphrases hit, rather than calling them out of actual interest for the game.
Nothing can exemplify this better than the "South Side Stand up!" call, which he'd deliver like the team just clinched the playoffs, during seasons where we were breaking records for how awful the team was.
Like, of course, you want your broadcaster to hype the team. But that's never what it felt like it was. It felt like a guy who had no understanding of what he was calling, but just wanted to be loud and noticed.

Team Japan is called Samuraj. I’m not offended and I’m Japanese ! Lol

Some people got thin skin even when they have no skin in the game, literally.

There are people who are perpetually angry and miserable. They want others to feel the same way so they can feel better about their own unhappiness

I don’t know, it’s kind of 1980s WWE where every player is defined by their race. Like he’s Ricky the Dragon Steamboat or the Great Kabuki. Does he get to be just a guy, or is a flute going to play every time he comes up to the plate?

You forgot Yokozuna too lol

Thats another one.

Wasn’t he Hawaiian?

Except that one was kinda racist because he wasn't even Japanese. He's a samoan doing a Japanese stereotype

Because the US is an overly sensitive society when it comes to race.
It’s a cool nickname and there is nothing derogatory about it or ill will so it’s just people are sensitive and will make a big deal about nothing.

It’s just lazy. Leans on a very obvious stereotype. I don’t think anyone found it offensive, just lazy. And no he did not lose his job because of that. He lost his job because he failed to connect with the fans on any real level.

Recreational outrage.

People are so soft that now words hurt worse than anything else.

Because people are fucking soft.

I don’t get it. The Cubs gave out a bobblehead of Suzuki swinging a katana through a baseball. If that’s okay (and it is), I have no idea why this would be offensive. It would be like calling a US player in Japan the “___ Cowboy.”

My understanding was that John talked to Mune about it first and he was fine with it. If that's truly the case then it should be fine. At worst though it's more reductive than racist. Boiling the Japanese down to either samurai or ninjas constantly because that's what a lot of Americans know about their culture and history.

American have gotten more overly sensitive with each successive young generation since the Boomers. Gen Z is currently the most hypersensitive in American histor. Nothing can be said in the public space without somebody getting offended about it, whether it's justifiable or not. I'm glad this hasn't affected the Chicago Blackhawks (one of the coolest name and logo in sports). Ironically enough, asian countries have some pretty disturbing racial nsensitivity and intolerance towards dark skinned people.

White people tbh

Because everything is offensive and controversial now a days. Everything.

Cuz welcome to mainstream america where the goal is not saying anything that could even maybe might be offensive to anyone
