yeah that makes sense, gotta look out for the finances too
I’m not surprised, his issues felt more mental health and training oriented than skill and I think opting out would be bad for everyone involved
Bad for his wallet too
Yeah, bad for his wallet
If he opted out he would probably just end up in NPB again
I don’t agree with that, even a low end MLB salary is the same or more than what high end NPB players make. Teams will gladly give a high upside pitcher $8-$10 million and gamble on him potentially giving them $25+ million in value.
That said there was no fucking way he was opting out of those current Astros paychecks
To be clear my rationale is that if he did opt out, it would be less for money and more because he just wants to go home. At that point it wouldn't be about money it would be about mental health and trying to chill out.
If he opted out, he gets a 2-way contract at best.
His stuff was filthy, especially that wrong way slider. But it's useless if he can't hit the strikezone with his fastball, and he just proved he can't. Guys don't swing at high fastballs as often here like how they do in NPB, yet he still kept throwing it.
What is a two-way contract?
It’s what it sounds like where a player signed a deal that’s good for both the major leagues and minor leagues. Basically instead of getting a minor league deal with an invite to spring training he’d be given a contract that’s stipulates he can either make the MLB roster or be sent to the minors. They really aren’t all that common, usually it’s more common for a veteran to sign a minor league deal with a clause saying if he isn’t added to the MLB roster by X date he is free to opt out and look at other options.
His stuff+ was a terrible 86. And he ended up being a 2 pitch pitcher last season. Not looking exciting skill wise unless he makes some major changes. His K% and decent 4.26 SIERA were surprising more than anything imo.
I think that hitters will be more used to his funky slider, and how much he throws it, next season.
Not good his first year, but he was vocal about how difficult the transition to America was. Hopefully he can adjust some things and come back strong next season. (Yes, there will be a season you fucking pessimists.)
He looked like a beast at times, just needs more time to adapt to life in the US.
Yeah he'd be stupid to give up almost $20M. He won't make anywhere near that amount if he went back to NPB.
How reddit sees baseball:
Awful Pitcher: DFA this bum
Awful Pitcher But Japanese: wow he got so much promise, he just needs more time
It could always be worse
More like if you have good stuff people will presume they are fixable and they usually are.
Bad take, it was his first season and he had well above average swing and miss stuff. Teams give chances to those types all the time hoping they can put it together.
Except for Kei Igawa.
Kei Igawa signed by a different franchise would have had a chance
Man, what the hell happened to the guy, also didn't realize the guy was 30 feels like yesterday when he was breaking out in 2022, jeez.
I hate how I knew exactly who this was gonna be before I even clicked 🙁
Clear that a big chunk of his struggles were culture/adjustment related, not talent
Not surprised. I think the dude has it in him, he's just in his own head, coming to a new country and a new league.
That said I wonder if the lockout next year could throw him off....we'll see I guess.
He has very good whiff and strikeout rate. He just has poor control/command.
He seems very fixable to me.
Agreed, I was at the game where he walked like 6 Mariners in a row and it definitely seems like something he could work on in the offseason.
This is who he was in Japan as well. I'm sure the Astros will work with him, but I don't know how much you can improve the control without losing the stuff.
Yeah it has to be a massive change for these NPB guys that come from Japan. You have to applaud anyone that makes the transition look easy.
Doesn’t the NPB also reportedly use a different baseball than the MLB baseball like it’s already has a sticky surface or something like that? I’d say the change from throwing that baseball to the MLB one also could have caused some of his struggles if he had problems getting his grip right
I think it's a problem with the posting system overall. Pretty much every other country in the world has an avenue to the MLB pipeline much earlier in the player's developmental years, but the MLB makes massive exceptions for Japan. It doesn't help the Japanese players and it hurts competitive balance in the MLB (because Japan's best players are exempt from the draft or international signing pool, which are designed with competitive balance in mind). The only party that benefits from this system are the NPB franchises. MLB doesn't give a crap about subsidizing pro leagues in the DR or Mexico - why do we have this completely different system for Japan?
Rangers killer Tatsuya Imai
Honestly I thought it would be a very real option that he would opt out because he realized he did not enjoy playing in America and I would have totally respected that

84 ERA+ pitcher still wants to make good money. Water is wet
