The Japanese national baseball team is also called Samurai Japan. They clearly lean into that aspect of their culture even outside of Western stereotypes, so I don't see what the problem is if Mune himself is OK with it

That's the thing. Many local sports media ppl were quick to complain the slogan was a stereotype against Japanese, but many Japanese have leaned into that and embrace it. Even the Japanese WBC team leaned heavy into the Samurai tradition. It's like if I were to get offended if a non-American brought up cowboys and yankees to describe Americans.

There’s absolutely no reason to believe that his use of that nickname one time was solely the reason they moved on. Like that they were completely enamored with his work in the booth and were just waiting until the offseason to hand him his next 3 year deal but because he said “Southside Samurai” in one April game they decided 6 months later to move on.

Just let Schriffen have this one; it was his best creation. The level of vitriol for this guy is unwarranted. He wasn’t good for calling baseball, and he wasn’t a “Chicago guy.”
It’s also not his fault that the organization was dumb enough to get contentious with Benetti and burned that bridge.
Just leave it at that and move forward.

Tokyo Sports is a Japanese media outlet that constantly puts out clickbait articles. They even call outlets like FanSided “major international media” just to make their stories sound more legit and get more clicks.
This article is especially shitty. They're taking a sensitive topic like racism, which is a touchy subject even for Japanese people, and making it sound like people in Chicago are outraged about it. They're clearly trying to get people to think, “Wait, is ‘Samurai’ actually racist?!” just to bait them into clicking.
It's honestly pathetic, and people have every right to be pissed off. I shit on this outlet all the time on X because they keep pulling this kind of crap.

it's really hard to offend japanese and canadians for that matter. in 04 the white sox would play godzilla clips when they went to Mr. Zero to close games. he was always polite and deferential but that's pretty offensive for even the early 2000's. no one got fired except shingo the next season.
Shriffen was terrible at his job, and also impervious to constructive criticism, there's no mystery here. brooks boyer should be fired for even interviewing this guy.
