日本の文化や人口はひとまず置いておいて。

ハッキリしているのはね：
A. Jリーグへの道筋が、学校レベル、クラブレベル、大学レベルと、日常生活に溶け込んでいるってこと。加えて、サッカーはどのレベルでも年中無休で、他のスポーツに取って代わられる短いシーズンじゃないんだ。それに、子供たちはサッカー、AFL、クリケット、バスケを同時にやるんじゃなく、1つのスポーツに集中してる。
B. Jリーグは十分に大きい。若手はそこでプレーすることを熱望してるし、サラリーキャップもない。
C. Jリーグ/サッカーが日常生活に溶け込んでるから、強力な地域支援が生まれてる。

それに比べて、俺たちの育成パスは全体的に弱い。

俺たちの子供たちはAリーグの選手になることを目指してない。せいぜいBプランだよ（NPLでさえ通用しないような選手でもね）。サラリーキャップも問題だ。

ほとんどのAリーグは、お粗末なフランチャイズチームで、地域社会を効果的に代表して貢献するクラブじゃないんだ。サッカーはこの国で他のどの競技よりも感情的なスポーツなんだよ。もしAリーグが世界のトップ選手を惹きつけられないか（オージーは最高の選手を見るのが好きなんだ）、あるいは地域社会の感情的な基盤に完全に溶け合ってないなら、ファンは来ないだろうね。

Japanese culture and population aside.

What is clear is:
A. The path to J-League is integrated into daily life at a school level, club level, university level etc. Plus football is 365 days a year at every level and not just a short season before another sport takes over. Also kids are playing 1 sport, not Soccer, AFL, Cricket, Basketball all at the same time.
B. The J-League is big enough. The youth aspire to play there plus no salary cap.
C. The integration of J-League/football into daily life develops strong community support.

Our broader development path is weak in comparison.

Our kids don't aspire to be A-League players, it is a plan B at best (even if they aren't good enough for NPL). Salary cap also a problem.

Most A-League is micky mouse franchise teams and not clubs that effectively represent and work for their communities. Football is an emotional sport, more than any other code in the country. If the A-League can't attract the worlds best players (Aussie's like to watch the best) or is not fully integrated into the emotional fabric of their communities, the fans won't come.

オーストラリアのサッカーを追ってる日本人として、一つ気になるのは、代表選考でフィジカルが重視されすぎてるように見えるってことなんだ。オーストラリアは多様な多文化国家なのに、背が低くてボール扱いの技術に優れた選手ってあんまり見かけないんだよね（僕の知識不足かもしれないけど）。言いたいのは、特定の世代のスカウティングにおいて、オーストラリアの「良い選手」の定義が硬直しすぎてるんじゃないかってことかな？

As a Japanese person following Australian football, one thing that catches my attention is that national team selections seem to favor physicality. Australia is a diverse, multicultural country, yet I rarely see players who are shorter in stature and excel in technical ball-handling (though that might just be my lack of knowledge). What I'm trying to say is that could Australia's definition of a "good player" across certain generations of scouting have become too rigid?

Let me briefly explain the football environment for Japanese students from elementary through high school. At the elementary level, teams are generally organized based on local communities. The landscape shifts significantly at the junior high level, where players typically choose between three types of teams: J.League "Junior Youth" squads, local club teams, or school-based teams. High school is where the system truly reflects the unique nature of Japanese football; players generally choose between J.League "Youth" teams and high school teams. Players who fail to advance from the Junior Youth level to the Youth level often join high school teams instead. It is important to note the existence of a structured league system: the "Premier League" (divided into East and West), the "Prince League" (divided into roughly ten regional blocks), and the "Prefectural Leagues" (organized across the 47 prefectures). In large prefectures like Tokyo, the system extends down to a fifth division, further subdivided into groups like 5A, 5B, and 5C. Within the East and West Premier Leagues, J.League Youth teams and high school teams compete fiercely against one another. What truly defines the Japanese high school scene, however, is the dedicated high school cup tournament, where some 4,000 schools vie to be crowned the national champion—an event that draws crowds exceeding 60,000 spectators for the final match. A defining characteristic of Japanese football is its approach to elite development: rather than discarding players who mature later, the system retains them, as evidenced by the fact that the majority of players who competed in the 2026 World Cup did not come up through the J.League Youth ranks.

2. Japanese people are ferociously competitive at everything, including sport. So are Australians when it comes to sport to be fair.
3. Japanese people are incredibly detail oriented/meticulous in everything - architecture, cooking etc., even menial tasks. This translates to how they train, strategise and play. Australia is more laid-back, which can be a positive and a negative.
4. Japan's sporting talent pool is mainly split up amongst baseball, martial arts and football, but I think Australia's talent pool is probably one of the most dispersed talent pools in the world after probably America

We need to consider than Australian football has historically had governance and infrastructure issues. The AIS in Canberra was one of the rare places to develop talent and Ron Smith nurtured it.

Then, we should consider that aside from whenever the Lowy family has invested in football, the sport has not had huge investment in it compared to foreign leagues. The big money in this country is in the mining and tech sectors, so we should be getting businesspeople from those fields to pump huge capital AND spend it wisely.
