I think Darvish is correct.
If this kid is as good as everyone thinks he is, he can dog walk the NPB for a few years, get his confidence and form in check, and then come into the MLB ready to go.
And also won’t he make like insanely more money than a minor leaguer or international signing?
Team can hold him up until he is 25 so thats almost a decade.
He can use the MLB interest leverage to get Yomiuri to agree to add the same automatic posting clause Ohtani and Roki had in their NPB contracts. Darvish even argues this which is in the body of this post
His recommended path is the opposite: sign with a Japanese club, play four or five years, build in an automatic posting clause, and jump straight to the majors without ever seeing the minors.
You can't expect redditors to read something in the post, that would be heresy.
Unless he gets called up immediately to MLB, he would receive his MLB contract faster going that way. He should do whatever he wants of course, but the NPB route will be better practice imo and it seems like the faster way to signing the big contract if he ends up as good as people think he is. Yamamoto left at 25 or 26 and look at what he got. Most pitchers don't get to free agency in MLB until 28. Ultimately up to him though.
Yamamoto was not a high-pick draft. He didn't play in Koshien. Heck he didnt get to be a regular starter until his third season. This guy is a high school superstar. He has the pedigree that Yoshi didnt have at that age.
He was a 4th round pick I think
Interestingly Imai was first round pick in the same year
While making real money in a comfortable environment
Oda is a big enough star to probably demand some type of early posting, like Sasaki did.
I don’t disagree with him. How many kids in the US or elsewhere are posting up that kind of velocity at 18? It’s a completely different world out there now.
Get the bag now with a good sign on bonus and end up in the minors for the rest of your career?
Or kick ass at the Tokyo dome and eventually move over.
There's also option C: get the bag now, go to the minors, and be in the majors in 4-5 years, 3-5 years quicker than he would be if he stayed in Japan.
NPB teams give new guys a pretty sweet setup for the first few years. They provide nice, comfortable dorms with meals planned by professional nutritionists, which is way better than the grind in the U.S. minor leagues.
And that's not mentioning all the commercial opportunities in Japan if he blows up as the next big thing, as opposed to next to zero coming up through the minors.
Yeah he would instantly be more valuable in MLB if he comes over with a NPB reputation and the superstardom therein.
You're provided housing in the minors in the US now as well.
And Rookie Ball is at MLB teams Spring Training complexes, so they've got pretty nice setups there too.
How many kids in the US or elsewhere are posting up that kind of velocity at 18?
Chiba Lotte drafted a high school LHP this year who threw the same velo (156kmh), FWIW. Selected a different HS pitcher who hit 155 last year.
Yeah everyone here seems to be ignoring team control here on the MLB side too.
If his goal is to get the bag then he needs to juice it to the MLB before his arm snaps off.
If it doesn’t work out he can always go back to Japan
I mean Japanese pitchers for some reason always end up injured once they move over to the US. This could be survivorship bias but I don't think moving over to the US is the best decision in terms of longevity.
Has the NPB gotten better at managing pitcher workloads? They were notorious for running up insane pitch counts.
If you view the treatment of Roki as the trend moving forward for treatment of elite young prospects then yes. At every step of his career, his coaches in high school and NPB choose to rest roki’s arm to their detriment in results.
It's not NPB that's the issue. It's at the high school level. NPB uses 6 man rotations as well.
You're thinking of the high school tournaments, in which many of the players treat as their final games anyway since they don't expect to go pro. They are often willing to leave it out on the field.
NPB uses six man rotations and more set schedules with less travel and rainouts (due to all the domes). When Yamamoto and Sasaki came over, a lot of the talk was how they'd have to handle a larger workload in America since it's 5 man rotations and more travel and training and strain on the body.
Insane pitch counts are very rare in NPB these days
I mean they pitch much less frequently and end up with less innings in general which I would argue is better for the arms
I've said this before, but if teenage Japanese players are wanting to bypass NPB to sign with MLB teams, they're going to be in for a rude awakening. They're going to have little to no support in the minor leagues, they're going to be in smaller to dumpy towns to start with, and they will be in cities that have limited to no cultural support.
I agree, the system in the US is rough. It's so flooded that I bet some good players would never even get called up if they do take this route instead of the NPB
Break your national records by dog walking 4 Sawamura Awards, do some couple CGSO, Perfect Games, and have sub 1 ERA in NPB.
Then some trash banging reporter would sneer and jeer at him while saying: How do you give a guy $425 million (SP inflation) without ever throwing a pitch in MLB?
That's a good route imo.
Haven’t the Giants posted like three players ever? A couple of them were family situations to a certain degree. Good chance he wouldn’t be able to join an MLB club until after playing 9 years in Japan and would sign potentially one long term deal in MLB. If he was drafted by Seibu and knew he’d be posted, I think that would be different. Who knows if he gets hurt down the road and pitching in MLB never happens. Best to chase the dream now with no regrets and then whatever happens, happens.
Oda has the leverage to ask for the same automatic posting clause Ohtani and Roki had in their contracts is the difference. If Yomiuri, the team who drafted him, doesn’t offer that their chances of signing him go down drastically.
Nippon Ham Fighters had the leverage of offering Ohtani the opportunity to be a two-way player which was a huge factor in convincing him to wait to go to the MLB.
Yomiuri Giants don't really have anything concrete to offer Oda besides hypotheticals that it'll set him up better if he postpones an MLB debut.
Yeah, it's paradoxical because you'd think a team like the Giants would set you up for an MLB posting quite well, but in reality, most players have come from smaller teams (in popularity, relatively speaking, giants are undoubtedly the biggest team) like Orix, Seibu, Carp, Nippon-Ham, Rakuten, Swallows and others, even though the Giants are the most popular team. I think their stubbornness about being more than simply a stepping stone is hurting them in the long run
That's exactly why he's telling him to get the posting clause in his contract.
He would absolutely get a side contract guaranteeing he is posted when he wants, just like Roki
Yamaguchi just had a clause in his contract.
Get a posting clause
Playing for Hideki Matsui would be a great way to learn what it takes to succeed over here too
18 straight to us minor leagues would be a lot for someone from Japan
Its a good point. NPB teams only have one farm team so the climb to the top club is way less steep with way less competition than in the US
Several teams have multiple farm teams.
Someone like Oda would see first team time as a rookie, though
It’s only Softbank.
Kyojin, Carp, and Lions as well. Kyojin 3-gun is well established.
With his status, he could be pitching in the NPB by next summer
Based on things l’ve seen about Oda in Japanese media, he seems to have a strong desire to financially take care of his family, especially his mother who is raising him and two sisters as a single mother. If he is to sign with a NPB team, the NPB rules would limit his signing bonus + performance bonuses to a maximum of 100 million yen + 50 million yen. If he is to sign with a MLB team, he is expected to get up to 5 times that amount. Knowing that how toxic and unforgiving the pro baseball world can be for high school graduates, I don’t blame him for wanting to get paid right away rather than having to wait a few years.
He can - and would - earn a ton immediately in endorsements in NPB, especially with the Kyojin. They can also pay him a very high salary almost immediately.
It's also a much better development environment and facing better competition earlier in NPB than MiLB.
Let the kid dream, but he has to run the minor league gauntlet like every other prospect. If he’s truly that gifted, it will show on the diamond.
Otherwise, Darvish gave the more practical route.
At first I thought a new One Piece collab was in the works
I mean, I don't think Oda is necessarily going through this route for the right reasons, so I think the allure of the early money will outweigh the pragmatism of Darvish, who also obviously wants to see the NPB stay strong and this not become a constant thing. But Oda will learn soon enough that he doesn't have the body to hold up in the MLB minors and he'll get broken down before he even sees the majors.
What's happening in the NPB is actually just like what happened in the 00s after the success of Bron. All these hyped HS players went straight to the pros and majority busted because they weren't cut for the immediate leap, mentally or physically, and it completely depleted the college game until they had to make a ruling change. NPB really has to seriously consider how it approaches the ecosystem it creates for young players in the NPB and how they can make sure they can both accept them taking the pathway to the MLB while still finding a way to accentuate everything the NPB can/does do better than the MLB ever can.
I feel like if he can sign with the Dodgers or any team for a good amount, then go to the MLB. Pitching arms don’t last very long nowadays.
Counterpoint: doing the same thing as everyone else is boring, only to end up struggling to adjust to the American lifestyle while carrying a burden of expectation like Tatsuya Imai.
To be fair, Imai promised and didn't deliver. The statements he was making as well as the requests only bit him in the ass. Not wanting to have any Japanese players on the team he chooses wasn't one I was expecting. Also, the trash talk and wanting to compete against Yamamoto was bold.
Dodgers fan and I agree with Darvish. Why go through the shitty minor league system when you can develop in the professional system in Japan? The key is to make sure there is a contractual posting guarantee option.
The Japanese system is proven and frankly I do think it’s good for the country to be able to develop and enjoy their own talent.
It's not like just because he's Japanese there's an unwritten obligation to play in the NPB before heading to the MLB.
No one cares when top prospects from the Dominican and other countries come over without playing in their local pro league.
He might even find out that NPB isn't a small dream after all
Darvish trying to keep him away from the dodgers
But what will the new posting system look like post cba? Will there be an international draft which will limit his future earning?
