To be fair, about 3 billion of those are mainland Chinese and Indian Not a whole lot of baseball action going on there
Steven Kwan, Bryan Woo, Connor Joe...
To be fair, those guys were all 2nd or 3rd generation Asian Americans that had parents that empowered them to play baseball. I would say it's still pretty rare for a lot of Asian families.

Tommy Edmonds, Dave Roberts
Wasn't Dave Roberts born on a US military base in Japan? Technically born on US soil, but an interesting case.
They are mixed though
Hybrid of Jim and Tommy? Jokes aside, his wife is also half-Japanese, asian born in US

In Japan, Taiwan, South Korea -- baseball is life and it's passed down from one generation to the next. Japan in particular, have baseball academies that pump out young baseball players every year to be drafted into their pro leagues. In America -- a lot of Asians are immigrants. We don't have the opportunity for things to be passed down to us. No one to teach us the game. Our immigrant families don't prioritize sports. However, I think you'll see more 2nd and 3rd generation Asian Americans in s…
I'm Yonsei and every male member of my family played baseball! My jiichan even played in Topaz (and he played football there too). I agree that the immigrant families are probably adjusting more to the culture and us longer established ones are the more sporty ones! Although - my family has apparently been playing baseball since he Meiji era, but that's probably a bit of an outlier case.
Exactly. My parents know nothing of baseball. They came to America to have a better life. They didn't come to chase dreams. No way they wanted their kids to play a sport. Careers aren't made that way... Now, if you have/had relatives that grew up with the game then chances are they passed it on to you.
Also, the US brought baseball to Japan and Korea since their wars, respectively. Like, Korean Fried Chicken African American GI’s brought their fried chicken recipe to Korea and it had since spread.
Not sure about Korea, but Japan already had a professional baseball league prior to World War II. I think it was introduced sometime in the 1800s.
Baseball was popular in Japan well before WW2. American teachers introduced it in the 1880’s and it became well integrated into the school system( high school baseball is the sports root there). The Japanese spread it to Korea and Taiwan as part of their empire.
Baseball predates USA military presence in their countries. In Japan, it was brought in the 19th century and blew up in popularity in the 1930s. In Korea, it was introduced by missionaries but started to flourish under Japanese rule.
Because Asian families know academics is a much more safe option. The chance of becoming an MLB player is extremely low for even White and Latin guys. Forget Asian Americans. Meanwhile the chance of becoming getting a high paying job as a doctor, engineer, lawyer is much higher
What is an “American-born Asian”? I understand that’s simply an American player.
Asian American is probably more exact.
To start, there are a lot more Koreans, Japanese, and Taiwanese than there are Korean-Americans, Japanese-Americans, and Taiwanese-Americans. But having married an Asian-American, having a ton of Asian-American friends, and going to a university that was, no joke, 65% AAPI in demographics, I truly think it's cultural. Asian immigrants to the US tend to have extremely high expectations for their kids and baseball is too... fun? It has a lot of downtime. There is a lot of goofing off. Immigrant pa…
Asian immigrants didn't sacrifice their life in their homeland to chase an athletic dream. They're chasing educational/occupational dreams they could not achieve in thei countries
Cool to say but the reality is that Asian Americans dont generally immigrate to the Socal, Arizona, Texas and Florida suburbs where high level organized youth baseball is played. Puerto Rico has academies and Cuba has a robust youth program as well. There arent a lot of Northeast born players these days despite it being the historical home of baseball bc they cant play ball year round like ppl from Florida, Texas and Southern California can.
Asian Americans live everywhere. Especially in California
What? The biggest Asian populations are in Southern California, Texas, and Florida. Asian Americans don't grow up with the game. Plain and simple. It's not viewed as a viable career. It's not ingrained in the Asian American culture.
As an Asian American it’s a combo of stuff. My parents explained to me if you were a really tall athletic person in Asia you typically are going to stay there because you well get better money opportunities there. That means the one that migrated here are not the most genetically gifted. Our parents don’t really put us in sports here and if they did they are obsessed with basketball or volleyball. They typically only wanted us to study. Of course there are outliers.

Population of Asia is roughly 4.86 BILLION people. The population of Asians in the United States is just a little more than 25 MILLION. So while in fairness there are surely a number of variables affecting the rate of ascension to Major League Baseball, a driving factor in the difference you asked about is population. Asia has 192 people to every 1 Asian-American.
