Based on his results in the weeks before he was put on the IL he was probably around a 2/10. So an 8/10 estimation is a massive jump, I guess we will all find out in the next 5 days. Either way he's going to be hurting and will get some procedures done right after the postseason ends. Hopefully Dave's 80% estimate holds true, and Ohtani can find a way to push through the pains and find a way to he productive the rest of the way.

We will all see soon enough. But I’m skeptical. Shohei has knee and neck and biceps issues. Sure he is better now (I don’t even know what these percentages really mean) but he can be one bad swing or slide or run from aggravating any of them again. If he is clearly compromised and looks like he did before they begrudgingly put him on IL then I would say shut him down and I’ll take my chances with the second coming of Juan Soto at DH.

On one hand you have a player with 42 big league plate appearances and on the other you have a rookie of the year, 4x MVPs, 6x All-Star, 4x Silver Slugger, an NLCS MVP, and a 2x World Series Champion who has yet to lose a playoff series. You think 42 plate appearances overrides all this precedent on the strength of a hypothetical?
If Tommy Edman can start center field in Game 7 of the World Series on an ankle that needed to be surgically repaired, then they can sure as hell ride into the postseason with the greatest player on the planet at less than 100%.

Reality is he doesn't, if Ohtani is going to be as bad and obviously hurt as he's been the past month and a half or so, JDP is 100% the better option. But we both know that'll never happen, because as the guy said, That's the 700m dollar 4x MVP, GOAT, if he's going to he benched for JDP it'll have to be his decision only , that's how this works. But hopefully this won't have to be a question and Ohtani is playable to at least 80% upon his return.

Bat speed is the troubling piece of this. One can pretty safely assume part of that loss is from injury, but how much is not entirely clear. He is at the age where speed typically is declining and he is still above average in this "off year".

I think of this the same way I think of when I go on long hikes and an ache or blister pops up. You change your gait a bit to compensate and then suddenly the whole thing goes to shit.
His knee bugging him could very well have caused him to do funky things in the rest of his motions, because as he swung he was favoring one side or another.
People tend to forget how much one little ache can screw up our dynamics until they get that little annoying blister and then suddenly they have an entire lower back spasm from messing up their locomotion. Same thing, IMO.
