Damn did not expect to see UBC mentioned in this sub, let alone in this context. Canadian university ball seems like a very unconventional route for future pros to go through.
it is slightly more uncommon but UBC i believe is the only canadian university playing any level of college baseball. The TBirds play in NAIA and have had a handful of draft picks over the last few years.
There have been a fair bit of undrafted players too
Bring him to Toronto!
A Japanese player on a plane to Toronto? Are we in a simulation?
Don’t forget to pay him for his precious work 😂
Well I mean hes only in uni, he can't have done THAT much in his past D:
He has been playing overseas since high school and also boasts an impressive physique, standing 6 feet 1.6 inches tall and weighing 238 pounds.
Doesn't him playing overseas imply that he's aiming for the MLB draft, like Rikuu and Shintaro?
He says in the article that he has been thinking of training up in Japan. They called it a "reverse import".
Dodgers to sign Kansai Sugimoto to 15-year, $875 million contract, with payments deferred until 2045.
Sources: Kansai Sugimoto is en route to Toronto today.
A representative of his agency, Polymarket, would not comment when asked about Sugimoto's travel plans.
there really should be a rule that says if a team drafts TWP they should develop them as such... at least for first few years. I want to see more attempts at TWP like Ohtani.
The thing is too is that I’m not convinced there isn’t some middle ground.
I don’t see why we can’t have like a reliever who is also a usable platoon bat/pinch hitter.
I think it’s cause there are a lot of players that can be relievers/bench players. I assume the thinking is that any value from being a combination of that is outweighed by the perceived potential value of one of those types if you had them focus solely on pitching/hitting.
That being said, if you had a player with that combination it would allow the team to free up a roster spot for a big name starter/hitter
I think we’re gonna find that pushing both as far as possible doesn’t have much downside vs focusing solely on one. Look, you’re not gonna be in the cage all day and you’re certainly not pitching all day. One doesn’t take time away from the other so really what’s the downside in training up both. Now, whether someone actually has the talent to thrive in both at an mlb level is a whole nother matter.
They need a mop up duty pitcher, utility fielder, and pinch runner. Like if Andres Gimenez had a mean slider.
More like "Ohtan-eh" amirite?
He’ll pitch full time, decent hitter but no pop

I'd prefer to wait until he starts playing professionally before we dub anybody the second coming of Ohtani. Paul Skenes, Jac Caglione, and Spencer Schwellenbach all won Olerud awards and ended up specializing because the doing both at a high level is just too much for the average prodigy (Yes I know that's a little oxymoronic). Jac was/is the closest to fulfilling the Ohtani mold (he hit triple digits off the mound in college) and we certainly don't see him pitching now.
