Shirakaba ended up losing this game but got a standing ovation when they left the field -- the right side of the infield was busting ass the entire game. Just excellent fielding, in a tournament where you'll see all manner of bungled plays, because high school kids.

白樺学園のピッチャーに感情移入しちゃったよ。試合中ずっと素晴らしいピッチング（打撃も良かった）をしてたのに、調子が悪そうなクローザーに交代させられて、結局試合を台無しにされたんだ。

Felt for Shirakaba's pitcher. He was shoving all game (and hitting well too) and got switched off the mound for a closer who looked clearly out of sorts and ended up blowing the game.

リトルリーグ野球が実際にはアメリカの国民的娯楽であるのと同じように、甲子園も日本で同じようなものだと感じるよ。誰も大金のためにプレーしてるわけじゃない、ただ純粋な情熱、競争、そして野球への愛なんだ。

Kinda like Little League Baseball is actually America's National Pastime, I feel like Koshien is the same in Japan. No one is playing for big bucks, just pure passion, competition and love of the game.

それに試合はそれぞれ1時間半くらいで終わるんだ。イニングの合間にチームはフィールドを全力で駆け出して、また全力で戻る。俺の（日本人）妻はプロ野球の1イニングすら見ないけど、県大会から抽選会（甲子園はシード制じゃないから、たまに強豪校同士が初戦で当たることもあるんだ）まで、全部通して見るよ。

and the games are like 1.5 hours each. The teams RUN on and off the field between innings. My (Japanese) wife refuses to watch an inning of professional baseball, but will watch from the prefectural tournament to the lot draw (Koshien is not seeded, so sometimes you get powerhouses playing against each other in the first round), all the way through.

高校野球のファンじゃないけど、自分の地元の高校が甲子園で試合に勝ったって読むと気分が良いのは否定しないね。

While I'm not a fan of high school baseball, I won't lie that it feels good when reading your local high school won a game in Koshien.

I gotta ask, what are some of the biggest Cinderella runs in Koshien? I imagine most of the schools that win are from the big metro areas, and I always like to root for small schools or schools that are really remote.
