Are we sure Spencer can't pitch?

He did pitch in high school, maybe Matt Blake can fix him

He probably can. I feel like Blake can make me into a decent reliever and I was pretty bad in little league lol

I never played baseball as a kid. I like to hit people not baseballs. But I shared an elevator with Matt Blake in Sarasota for :30 and the next day at the carnival at the guess your speed booth I threw 99 with good downward movement.

Is this pasta?

It is now.

99 km right

Judge pitched, they were all the best pitchers/hitters from their towns

As someone said in the replies, he pitched in high school, but I think he ended up getting TJ surgery somewhere down the road, and that was it.

Even if he did end up with that surgery. It's not a end to pitching. Since the original person who got it, who sadly recently passed away. Ended up having a very good and long career.

He was a really good pitcher coming out of high school I believe. Wanna say he got TJ surgery before college and switched to the OF full time at Vanderbilt.

Lol or maybe play third base? Have we asked him?

I'd prefer for our absolute hulk of a sequoia to remain in the OF, where he can basically stand on his tippy-toes to snag balls going over the wall.
I'm still sad about that one robbery he missed in late June by Kerry Carpenter. He basically had it. Barely needed to hop to reach it.

I'm just joking lol he's definitely an outfielder

The Next Big Unit

Keep an eye on his interpreter

I do feel like waaaay more people than they think can pitch. All the best players pitched in high school. They can figure it out

For example,Dave Winfield. He also pitched in college. He had 29 strikeouts across two games during the college world series.

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not

I’m not saying I want jones to pitch, but I wish more kids coming up would try to stay pitching. The best hitter on my high school team went to college to pitch only. They don’t let these good hitters hit if they know how to pitch. I hope Ohtani changes that.

Well Ohtani is on the IL right now and I think he burned himself out doing both. He's now 32... maybe part of the reason he broke down this year was because he was trying to pitch full time again, and who knows if/when he'll even come back to hit again this year (he hit off a tee yesterday). And he's only at 85 innings this year, and was only pitching once a week to begin with. It was taking such a toll that for a good stretch in the middle of the year, he wasn't even hitting on the days he pitched.
You have to remember he's never really been a full time pitcher, either. He's only thrown 150 innings once in his MLB career. And his 2026 wRC+ of 142 is the lowest of his career since 2022 (which was, surprise, the only time he pitched over 150 innings).
From 2023-2025, he posted a wRC+ of 177 and a slug% of .640. This year he's at 142 wRC+ / .522 slugging. That's no small drop off. (Yes, he pitched a bit at the end of last season, but he only racked up ~67 innings including postseason).
I don't know that even a DH can handle the workload of pitching and hitting without risking injuries. It's a lot of different muscle groups, pitchers are sore for a day or two after a start, they have throw days, and every lingering ache/pain carries over to the other side of the ball. Running the bases, hitting every day, pitching every 5th day... I'm not sure that it's worth shortening a career over. When you're coming up through the minors, imagine having to put in all that work as a pitcher to hone your stuff while also doing all the cage work, on top of actually playing every day and pitching every 5th day (or every few days if you're a reliever).

Nobody can pitch without risking injury. Pitchers who don't hit get hurt all the time. Hitters get hurt frequently too. I'm not sure if doing one increases the risk of injury while doing the other, but he at the least has all of the injury risk of a pitcher plus all of the injury risk of a DH, which is more than either separately

It's not necessarily the risk of injury, it's the overall added workload. Again, Ohtani's wRC+ this season was 30 points lower than it's been the last 3 seasons. His power was way down, his slugging off by .100+... The risk of injury is part of it (fatigue can play a part in pulled muscles, for example), but it's also about endurance, lingering soreness, muscle strains/tightness... There are a lot of things that players deal with that don't keep them out of the lineup but are enough to negative impact their game, especially when they're working extra hard to pitch and hit. I'm not sure there are many guys that can even handle that kind of a workload, let alone excel at both enough to make it worth it.
That's without even considering the mental aspect. There's a lot of mental focus that goes into being elite enough to make the majors. All the cage/pen work that players put in, and now you have to do both , it's hard not to think that you're sacrificing a focus on both hitting and pitching by splitting your time between them.

Yes, this is this major issue with Ohtani that his fanboys continuously overlook. The physical act of pitching puts immense wear and tear on the shoulder and elbow. The body needs rest to allow tissue to heal. I know I'm dating myself with these references, but Dave Steib, Rick Rhoden, and Paul O'Neill were all two-way players in high school. O'Neill even pitched a no hitter in his sophomore year. But when it came time to play professionally, all were faced with a choice: hit, or pitch. All had long careers. Had they gone the Ohtani route, the toll on their bodies would have been immense.

They all can. They had to stop because thats just the way it is. Hopefully it changes and hopefully the special rules for DH/P stop

Meh…Ohtani barely pitches anyways

Of course Spencer Jones can pitch. The difference is that he's not a selfish attention whore who is willing to risk repeatedly tearing his UCL.

Left-handed third baseman, even rarer than the two-way player, take that Ohtani!

Jones used to emulate Judge’s leg kick. Then he redesigned his mechanics to be more like Ohtani.
How ironic would it be to go from ‘Lefty Judge’ to ‘Blanco Ohtani’

I believe it would be "Ohtani Blanco", which I feel has a better ring to it.

Counterpoint, BlancOhtani

GringOhtani

Blue-Eyes White Outfielder!

I just creamed a little pls excuse me

I mentioned it when he first made the switch. Hunching over less and incorporating less of a leg kick and more of a pivot made it so there's less moving parts to his swing. Next part is for him to realize that like Judge, he doesn't need to swing 100% to hit the ball hard.

It’s been mentioned a bunch but he did specifically say that he spent this offseason modeling his swing after Shohei
Shohei’s still feels cleaner but clearly whatever Jones is doing is working wonders right now

Yes, it's been mentioned before. Whatever he's doing, he should keep doing it lol. He's really been amazing. Jones has time to make it even tighter.

Agree. One other part to this is his beginning crouch that so many people doomed about on here but it seems the routine is working for him

You can see it in the front foot, Shohei is much more balanced with less movement. With less moving parts he gets better consistency. With Spencer, he's still opening up his hips early which is why his front foot can't stay planted and I suspect makes it harder to stay consistent. I have to imagine with more movement going on in his base (feet/legs/hips), it creates more movement in his head and that would reduce how much of the pitch he is able to see. Clearly, it isn't impacting him to the point where he isn't a major league hitter and it certainly could still be an improvement in any of his prior swings, but I bet we see a lot less swing and miss if he delays opening up his hips a bit. All that said, I am sure he and his coach know better than me and are most certainly working on it already if there's something to it.

I’ve seen enough. Defer a billion dollars to this man.

rake it in...ALL OF IT

To say he's made me eat my words is an understatement

Our guy is sexier

And now we have video evidence that he is 18” taller than Ohtani… in fact it looks like everybody, including the ump is 30% bigger in the American League. They never mention this.

Spencer still opens his hip a bit too much. I'm 100% sure once he stays a bit more closed like Ohtani, with his strength he'll keep more than enough power and reduce his swing and miss percentage.

Yeah the classic Paul O’Neill observation about hips flying open early

Same with Volpe. Playoffs are going to be tough for him.

If he produces the same shiiiiiet

It's been a minute since I've seen a Young Yankee improve game by game pretty consistently like Spencer Jones has.

Ohtani is more compact

For now!

Just wait till we get him on the mound

He actually used to pitch before he turned pro

Spencer jones is the better player.

My issue with Jones is that when he misses it almost looks like he’s playing whiffleball. But damn that’s a good side by side

I think the main difference between him and shohei is that he opens his front side as he's swinging.
