成田国際空港で、ウガンダから到着した男性グループに出くわしました。その中の一人、ダウは南スーダン出身の15歳です。
彼らは観光客や留学生として日本に来たのではありません。野球をするために来たのです。北海道の独立リーグチーム「旭川ビースターズ」に加入するために日本に来たと話していました。
実際、わずか15歳にもかかわらず、ダウは最速87mphを投げる投手です。複数のNPBチームからすでに注目を集めているだけでなく、メジャーリーグのピッツバーグ・パイレーツのスカウトも彼を見に来るほどの有望な若手選手だと言われています。
では、この才能ある若手選手は、なぜはるばる日本までやって来たのでしょうか？

(Transcript of a feature story aired by a Japanese television station)
At Narita International Airport, we came across a group of men who had arrived from Uganda. One of them, Dau, is a 15-year-old from South Sudan.
They had not come to Japan as tourists or international students. They had come to play baseball. They said they had traveled to Japan to join the Hokkaido independent league team “Asahikawa Be Stars.”
In fact, despite being only 15, Dau is a pitcher whose fastest pitch reaches 87 mph. Not only has he already attracted attention from several NPB teams, but he is said to be such a promising young talent that scouts from the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball have come to watch him.
So why did this talented young player come all the way to Japan?

「日本の野球は個人技よりも戦略を重視するところが好きです。ダルビッシュ有投手を尊敬しています」とダウは目を輝かせながら語っています。
成田空港に到着したばかりですが、彼は今、チームに合流するために旭川へ向かっています。驚くべきことに、彼は翌日のチームの開幕戦でプレーする予定だそうです。
彼らが着いたのはラーメン店。ここで食事をするのかと思うかもしれませんが、実はここが選手たちの寮なのです。ラーメン店が1階を占め、選手寮は2階にあります。
ダウにはベッドや冷蔵庫など基本的な家具が備え付けられた個室が与えられました。
独立リーグの新人選手は月に約760ドルを稼ぎます。寮の家賃、光熱費、その他の費用が差し引かれると、手取りは約250ドルだと言われています。
選手たちの朝食と夕食を毎日準備するのは、下のラーメン店の店長です。
この人気店は2008年に創業しました。旭川を活性化し、野球クラブを支援したいと考えている店長は、「寮父」として選手たちの面倒を見ています。

“I like Japanese baseball because it places more importance on strategy than individual skills. And I look up to pitcher Yu Darvish,” Dau says, his eyes lighting up.
He has only just arrived at Narita Airport, but he is now heading to Asahikawa to join the team. Amazingly, he is expected to play in the team’s season opener the very next day.
They arrive at a ramen restaurant. You might think this is where they are going to eat, but this is actually the players’ dormitory. The ramen restaurant occupies the first floor, while the players’ dormitory is on the second floor.
Dau has been given a private room equipped with a bed, refrigerator, and other basic furnishings.
A rookie player in the independent league earns about $760 a month. After rent for the dormitory, utilities, and other expenses are deducted, his take-home pay is said to be around $250.
The person who prepares breakfast and dinner for the players every day is the manager of the ramen restaurant downstairs.
The popular restaurant was founded in 2008. Wanting to help revitalize Asahikawa and support the baseball club, the manager takes care of the players as their “dorm father.”

今日の食事は店の名物「旭川ラーメン塩」。
ダウがラーメンを見るのは初めてのこと。「これは牛肉が乗ったスパゲッティかな？」と興味深そうに丼を覗き込んでいます。
恐る恐る一口食べると…顔がパッと明るくなりました。「うまい！」と笑顔を見せています。魚介系のスープには少し驚いたようですが、かなり気に入った様子です。
そして翌日、ついに開幕戦の日がやってきました！…と思いきや。
残念ながら雨。開幕戦は延期となり、チームは廃校になった中学校の体育館で練習して一日を過ごします。
体育館にはチームメイトが集まっています。自己紹介とウォーミングアップの後、キャッチボールの時間です！
監督からは「軽く投げろ」と言われていたダウでしたが、ボールは捕手のミットに轟音を立てて飛び込みます！比較的軽く投げても、その球にはとてつもない威力があります。チームの主将で捕手の金井は、「やばい！速すぎ！」と驚きを隠せません。
旭川ビースターズは、日本のプロ野球とメジャーリーグのスカウトの注目を集めることを目標に活動しています。チームにはアフリカ出身の選手が多く在籍。その背景には、ウガンダと日本の長年にわたる野球交流の歴史があります。

Today’s meal is the restaurant’s specialty, “Asahikawa Ramen Shio.”
It is the first time Dau has ever seen ramen. Looking at the bowl with curiosity, he wonders, “Is this spaghetti with beef on top?”
He cautiously takes a bite… and his face lights up. “Nice!” he says with a smile. The seafood-based broth seems to surprise him a little, but he appears to have taken quite a liking to it.
Then, the following day, it is finally time for the season opener! …Or so they thought.
Unfortunately, it is raining. The opening game is postponed, so the team spends the day practicing in the gymnasium of a junior high school that has since closed.
His teammates are gathered in the gym. After introducing themselves and warming up, it is time to play catch!
The manager had told Dau to “start by throwing lightly,” but the ball rockets into the catcher’s mitt! Even with a relatively gentle throw, the pitch has incredible power. Kanai, the team captain and catcher, cannot help but react in amazement: “That’s insane! So fast!”
The Asahikawa Be Stars play with the goal of attracting scouts from Japanese professional baseball and Major League Baseball. The team has many players from Africa. Behind this is a long history of baseball exchanges between Uganda and Japan.

野球がウガンダに伝わったのは1989年で、アメリカのキリスト教宣教師団体がこのスポーツを導入しました。
2011年には、現在旭川チームにいるコーチが青年海外協力隊員（JOCV）としてウガンダに渡航。国の野球協会設立など、本格的な野球普及を支援しました。
2015年には、ウガンダ人選手がリトルリーグ・ワールドシリーズに出場。その後、2019年にはロサンゼルス・ドジャースがウガンダに野球アカデミーを設立しました。

Baseball first came to Uganda in 1989, when an American Christian missionary organization introduced the sport to the country.
In 2011, the coach who is now with the Asahikawa team went to Uganda as a member of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV). He helped promote baseball in earnest, including establishing a national baseball association.
In 2015, Ugandan players competed in the Little League World Series. Then, in 2019, the Los Angeles Dodgers established a baseball academy in Uganda.

この3年間、旭川ビースターズもウガンダをはじめとするアフリカ諸国から選手をスカウトし、日本で育成してきました。そして昨年、チームに在籍していた3人の選手――うち2人はアフリカ出身――が埼玉西武ライオンズと育成契約を交わしました。アフリカ出身の選手が日本のプロ野球チームに加わるのは史上初の快挙でした！
そして今年、ダウは非常に期待される有望な若手選手としてチームに加入しました。彼の投球について、監督は「15歳とは思えない、とんでもない球を投げる」と絶賛しました。しかし同時に、監督はダウの最優先事項を体づくりだと判断しました。ダウは身長178cmですが、体重はわずか59kg。体格を大きくすることが彼の最大の課題なのです。

For the past three years, the Asahikawa Be Stars have also been scouting players from Uganda and other African countries and developing them in Japan. Then, last year, three players who had been with the team—including two from Africa—signed developmental contracts with the Saitama Seibu Lions. It was the first time in history that players from Africa had joined a Japanese professional baseball team!
And this year, Dau joined the team as a highly anticipated, promising young prospect. Regarding his pitching, the manager praised him, saying, “His pitches are incredible—you’d never think he was only 15.” At the same time, however, the manager decided that Dau’s first priority should be to build up his body. Dau is 5 feet 10 inches tall but weighs only 130 pounds. Developing his physique is his biggest challenge.

ダウの母国、南スーダン共和国は2011年にスーダンから独立した若い国です。この国では一夫多妻制が認められており、ダウの父親には4人の妻と24人の大家族がいます。ダウは10番目に生まれた子で、三男です。
彼は活発で幸せな生活を送っていましたが、3歳の時に内戦が勃発。子供たちは安全のため隣国ウガンダへ避難することを余儀なくされました。
彼の父親は医療関係の仕事をしており、母親は地元の会社員です。両親は子供たちを支援するためにお金を送るために南スーダンに残ることを決めました。それ以来、ダウは11年間両親に会っていません。電話で話すことさえできなかったと言い、南スーダンに戻る選択肢もありませんでした。
彼よりもずっと年上の姉たちが、両親の役割を担って彼を世話してくれました。
「状況が厳しくても、家族は日常生活だけでなく、野球をすることも可能にしてくれました。今、僕は故郷にお金を送り、家族を助けることで恩返しがしたいです。いつか家族全員が一緒に暮らせる家を建てるのが僕の夢です。」

Dau’s home country, the Republic of South Sudan, is a young nation that gained independence from Sudan in 2011. Polygamy is permitted in the country, and Dau’s father has four wives and a large family of 24 children. Dau is the tenth-born child and the third son.
He had been living a lively and happy life, but when he was three years old, civil war broke out. The children were forced to flee to neighboring Uganda for safety.
His father works in healthcare, while his mother is an employee at a local company. His parents decided to remain in South Sudan so they could send money to support their children. Since then, Dau has not seen his parents for 11 years. He says he was not even able to speak with them by phone, and returning to South Sudan was not an option either.
His older sisters, who are much older than him, took on the role of parents and looked after him.
“Even though things were difficult, my family not only supported me in everyday life but also made it possible for me to play baseball. Now I want to give back by sending money home and helping my family. My dream is to one day build a house for my family so that we can all live together again.”

「もちろん家族に会いたいし、寂しい気持ちもあります。でも、チームメイトのおかげで野球に集中できています。こんな素晴らしいチームメイトに囲まれて、本当に心強いです」と、チームメイトへの感謝の気持ちを語っています。
そして、雨で延期されていた開幕戦の日がついにやってきました。相手は富良野ブルーリッジ。ダウは最初の試合では登板しませんでした。
翌日、2試合目では、旭川ビースターズの打線が序盤から爆発し、大きくリードを広げます。
しかし、5回裏、相手打線がヒットを連ね、2アウト一塁二塁とビースターズは苦しい状況に追い込まれます。
その瞬間、監督はダウを初登板させました。彼は緊張した面持ちでマウンドに上がります。
長い腕から放たれた速球が、捕手のミットに轟音を立てて飛び込みました！
彼は得意のカーブで打者を三振に打ち取り、チームを助けました。
ベンチに戻ると、彼の表情は安堵に変わりました。「もう1イニング投げたかったけど、今は満足です」と、ほっとした笑顔を見せました。

“Of course, I miss my family and wish I could see them, but thanks to my teammates, I’m able to focus on baseball. Being surrounded by such wonderful teammates gives me a great sense of reassurance,” he says, expressing his gratitude to his teammates.
Then, the day of the opening game that had been postponed due to rain finally arrived. Their opponents were the Furano Blue Ridge. Dau did not pitch in the first game.
The following day, in the second game, the Asahikawa Be Stars’ offense exploded from the early innings, and they took a commanding lead.
However, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the opposing batters strung together a series of hits, putting the Be Stars in a tough situation with two outs and runners on first and second.
At that moment, the manager called on Dau to make his first appearance. He walked onto the mound with a nervous look on his face.
The fastball fired from his long arm roared into the catcher’s mitt!
He struck out a batter with his trademark curveball and helped his team.
When he returned to the dugout, his expression relaxed. “I wanted to pitch one more inning, but for now, I’m satisfied,” he said with a relieved smile.

Well… this story took an unfortunate turn.

南スーダンの部分を完全に読み飛ばしてて、日本でどんな内戦が起きてるんだってめちゃくちゃ混乱してたわ。

彼の才能や際立ったスタッツについては何も否定するつもりはないし、もし本当に15歳ならすごいことだけど、ただ言っておきたいのは、南スーダンには出生証明書に関する興味深い歴史、というかその欠如があるってこと。他のスポーツでも、驚くべきスタッツを残しながら、実際には公称年齢より数年年上だと判明したプロアスリートがいたんだよ…トン・メイカーはその一人だったね。

Not discounting anything about his talent or his standout stats and if he's 15 it's insane, but all I'll say is that South Sudan has a interesting history of birth certificates or lack there of, and there have been professional athletes in other sports with remarkable stats only to be found that they are several years older than claimed...Thon Maker for example was one.

That and, context-independent and purely from an MLB scouting perspective 87 mph at 15 isn't exciting. You get 15 year olds throwing 100 these days. There isn't generally too much of a velocity jump past the mid-teenage years, it's not some linear growth into adult years for a lot of the pro caliber talents.
Obviously there are additional factors with this kid in particular that could make him more projectable. Just want to provide some background for folks who don't follow amateur scouting and who maybe don't know what 87 at 15 means.
