The area Japanese really struggles to transcribe is words with lots of consonant sounds in a row.

日本語の「う」の音は弱かったり、ほぼ無音だったりするから、カルロス・アルカラスはむしろカロス・アルカラスみたいに聞こえて、Rの音はRとLが混ざったように聞こえるんだと思う

I think in Japanese the U’s are quiet or even silent, so Karurosu Arukarasu becomes more like Karos Arkaras and the Rs sound like a mixture of R and L.
