Can we incorporate some of that to the MLS?

No, we have limited ability to think other than quarterly in the United States.

It’ll take more than the MLS. Their plan encompasses all levels of soccer development, from small side youth soccer up to fitness and recovery routines, talent ID and development and not abandoning players that may not make the cut the first time. I just don’t see US Soccer, MLS, private owners and states cooperating well enough to do it.

Football coaching and development is to profit the coaching firms first, talent development is a welcome bonus but not why they're in business.

This is correct. unfortunately NO pro sport here has a vested interest in developing players from kids to elite athletes in the US.

Which has no impact at all on their international level considering their ceiling hasn't moved at all since 2002. I guess the benefit of a 100-year plan is that you can keep underperforming for decades and say it's all part of the plan.

Ok lol

The J league is focussed on development and grassroots football and having local teams around the country, the stated goal is to have 100. MLS is another franchised based boys club of owners that doesn't develop much and is bouyed by aging stars of varying talents. These days it's Messi once upon a time it was Tim Cahill. The best Americans don't usually make their start in MLS they've already been scouted and sent to Europe so there's not really as reliable pathway into the team like you can ge…

I thought 90% of the teams are only profitable by grabbing your players and selling them to european teams before age 25 but that’s what I read in the economist last week I don’t know shit about the MLS (or watch it) edit: I actually went and fact checked this after reading the Economist article . A lot of MLS clubs have intentionally shifted toward a develop and sell model. Clubs like FC Dallas, Philadelphia Union, New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake invest heavily in academies with the expec…

Perhaps but either those sales are a bunch of people not making the cut or the squad or they're being sold so young that the MLS and more broadly America is just not responsible for development. Go check the team list barely anyone who's playing in Europe had a healthy stint in the MLS

Seattle Sounders have also had numerous European transfers for both the American national team and others, Obed Vargas just featured for Mexico and has started for Atleti. The bones are getting there, our loudest voices are just particularly stupid so everyone rightfully makes fun of them

The kid spawned in from a youth team out of Anchorage, Alaska when Seattle scouted him too

This is accurate. If anything, this is an improvement over the existing model where coaches at the elite programs care more about winning tournaments so they can sell their services to rich parents rather than focus on developing players.

Japan at the same time also has a culture of sending lots of very young players to teams in 2nd Dutch / Belgian / Portugese leagues like Deinze, Almere, Maastricht, Sint Truiden, Desportiva Oliveirense to improve abroad.

Sint Truiden is owned by DMM, a Japanese company. The J-League funnels all their young players through Belgium via Sint Truiden, if no other European club wants them (due to visa restrictions etc.). Belgium and to a lesser extent Germany are really lax with visas. JFA also has a satellite office in Dusseldorf, Germany where they maintain contacts with European clubs regarding Japanese players.

Yes, it's a part of their strategy to get a broad base of players with European training & experience to increase the level and depth of their national team and the league.

Bang on. The priority for the American sports model is to grow its investors/owners’ investments and puts up barriers to prospective players and clubs in doing so . The weirdest thing is in the mls subreddit when you see posts showing (wildly inflated) franchise values and people getting excited about it, which in and of itself is a weird thing to be happy about because you’re effectively cheering for millionaires’ investments. The system is riddled with barriers to players, fans, and interested…

The culture is massively different. The MLS is all about money. You need money to get into the league, and those that generate the most money play. Japan is more like Europe. Anybody can make a team and join the league. Any kid can play football and join an academy without having to fork over tonnes of cash. And generally the league plays its young talent and isn't afraid to sell it on to Europe when a club is interested. There are some exceptions, like Iniesta, Torres etc. but there ard a lot l…

Anybody can make a team and join the league. Any kid can play football and join an academy without having to fork over tonnes of cash. And generally the league plays its young talent and isn't afraid to sell it on to Europe when a club is interested. That's all true of MLS too now.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/19/san-diego-fc-mls-expansion-mohamed-mansour

No it isn't. $500m expansion fee for the last team to join the league. It's absolutely not true. Anybody can make a team and join the J League. You have to be a multimillionaires/billionaire to make a team and join the MLS.

Oh yeah I thought you meant players ("make" as "get into a squad"). In that case I have a hard time believing you can make a competitive team in the J League with no money. How do you hire a coach and players? Get a stadium? Training ground? Might be less than MLS, but "anybody" I find it hard to believe.

You earn money by doing well in the lower leagues, upgrade over time, and eventually reach the J League. It's certainly not quick or easy, but it is possible. And you do have new clubs regularly being created and starting play. Most of them probably won't ever make the J League. But some will.

The best part is you have to beat Honda's amateur team (sort of) in order to get promoted into the J League. They're basically the last pre J League era giant still playing competitively and not as a mostly independent professional club

Yep can’t get relagated in MLS so there’s no incentive for MLS to invest and develop local talent at a more grassroots level, their MLS spot is safe. better to let the parents pay for all the training/clubs which drastically limits the player pool to only families who can afford it franchises work for nfl bc nobody else cares about american football, but if you competing globally in the sport everyone cares about, the incentive system needs to be better

Yup, ever since 2020 I would say things have been heading in a good direction for MLS, the problem is that structurally it’s a small, safe league. There’s only 30 teams and therefore only 30 Academy systems that are more equitable than the much more common pay to play systems. There’s simply not enough capacity due to the way MLS is structured. Now it’s true if USL continues to grow, and even establishes USL premier, and even more ideally leads to pro-rel (potentially even with MLS included), th…

In that scenario would their still be salary caps? I'm all for raising the salary cap. But I would hate if we got rid of salary caps and the clubs in California New York and Florida win every mls cup just because they outspend every club like in the premier league

I lowkey think there should be a salary cap that gets progressively higher at each level. Like if it was USL Champ -> USL Premier -> MLS it would be like (and these are subjective numbers) a +30% at the Premier level and a +50% from that at MLS. So say there’s (and this once again a totally subjective number) salary cap of $5,000,000 at the champ level, it would be $6,500,000 at the prem level and $9,750,000 (call it $10,000,000) at MLS.

Having a deeper pyramid helps but in my opinion the majority of players destined to play in the National Team would get to academies from top level clubs relatively early anyway. Not all of course, but most.

Maybe, but deeper pyramids also help kids who otherwise would not be interested in soccer beyond elementary school stay with it for longer. Really at the end of the day, soccer needs to compete economically with Football, Basketball, Baseball and to a lesser extent Hockey. So to that end, as soccer grows in the US, MLS will naturally become stronger as the salaries get more competitive, especially for guys that are good, but not superstars.

Japan had manga inspiration like captain tsubasa

Interestingly Captain Tsubasa is seen as a reason that Japan is not lethal enough in front of the goal. As the manga is really about the power of friendship. More recently, the Japanese are stimulating the manga called “Blue Lock”, which emphasizes the importance in being egoistic and clinical in front of the goal.

A lot of national teams have problems in the front (I’m looking at you Jonathan David) but what captain tsubasa did inspire is several generations of players like Nakata Hidetoshi in the midfield. Only once you have an established midfield can you worry about having good finishers. Time will tell if blue lock can generate super strikers (which was the theme for the legendary Famicom game captain tsubasa 2)

Not convinced there is much difference between them tbh

"Far more competitive" is an big stretch considering that the US have routinely outperformed Japan at the world cup since they both became regulars at the tournament. Year USA result Japan Result 1990 Group DNQ 1994 RO16 DNQ 1998 Group Group 2002 QF RO16 2006 Group Group 2010 RO16 RO16 2014 RO16 Group 2018 DNQ RO16 2022 RO16 RO16 2026 RO16 RO32 In the last 10 world cups, USA has out performed Japan 5 times, Japan has out performed USA 1 time, and they've finished at the same stage 4 times.

I was going to say, the entire premise of this question is just wrong.

I agree with this. Japan has a unique, controlled, style of play. However their talent pool isn't that much different than the US. Players are spread out through the top leagues sure similar to the US. But they both do not have a true superstar. Even though not the best indicator of talent, we can try to use transfer value for a rough estimate: Kubo 34M / Sano 30M / Suzuki 25M -> Japan Team's overall transfer value was 170M In comparison the US Pulisic 46M / Tillman 35M / Robinson 33M -> USA Tea…

The USA faced Bosnia in the knockout stage. You think it's not rigged for them to succeed?

Local man discovers tournament seeding and that finishing in a higher seed rewards you with an easier playoff run This concept has literally existed for decades in sports with a playoff bracket (granted it's mostly north American sports and not European), your reward for doing well in the group stage / regular season is and has always been a favorable matchup in the playoffs

Its not rigged but host nations do get a bit of a leg up. The US wouldn't have been seeded if they weren't hosts so would have ended up in pot 2 and in a group with one of the better teams. If they hadn't been seeded its more likely they would have finished second in the group and ended up playing Egypt who are a much better side than Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its a setup that smooths the road a little for the hosts at the start.

If USA finished second in their group like japan, they would most likely face Egypt Australia or Iran. The bracket is still rigged for them IMO.

You can't just say its rigged because they got an easier path. Every single year some teams get easy paths, some teams get difficult paths. Its just luck what happens in the group stage

But if you’re a host nation you do get an easier path because you’re seeded in pot 1 even if you really don’t belong with other pot 1 teams when it comes to quality. That means that you get to be “the big team” in your group, when in other tournaments you would have been joined by an actual big team. In that sense all World Cups are rigged to help the hosts

I think we'd beat Egypt and Australia and lose to Iran in that scenario. Given the political issues affecting the World Cup and especially Iran, the Iranians would have been very motivated to just run us off the pitch.

Interestingly enough we got further than them in 2002 and they were hosting then.

That wasn't thrown together. The knockout match ups are determined before the groups are set. Winning your group is supposed to give you an advantage for the next match. This must be your 1st WC.

Look at the USA path/bracket. It's rigged for them to have a glide path.
