Tl;dr: analytics
In the past 30 years we've learned:
Walks are more valuable than we realized. Hitters are taking more pitches leading to more walks and more strikeouts.
Power is more valuable than contact. Hitters are selling out for power.
Pitchers have very little control over what happens to the batted balls they allow. This is among several factors that have led to a realization that a strikeout is by far the most valuable outcome for a pitcher.
We have TONS of data on defensive positioning. The shift is illegal now, but the defense positioned much more optimally than it was 30 years ago.
The pitchtrax data we have now shows things like spin rate, and movement on pitches and has generally been much more beneficial to pitchers than it has to hitters in terms of optimizing mechanics and a successful approach.
I don't think it's necessarily all bad, but I do hope that we shift towards a more contact-oriented game at some point in the future. Balls in play are much more exciting than strikeouts.
Don't forget the rise of the relief pitcher and the demise of the complete game. Every pitcher is now able (even expected) to throw their best, hardest stuff all the time. A hitter might see 4 different pitchers across 4-5 different at bats.
And now every tendency you have as a batter is also available to every pitcher, at all times, through an iPad.
There is no stopping information or specialization, but it has really added to batting average woes.
I think it’s because of the strikeout and the going ham at every pitch. “Back in our day” Maddux, Smoltz and all of those pitchers were throwing 90-92mph and had 85 pitches going into the ninth inning. Now you see guys with 85 in the fifth
Glavine, not Smoltz. Smoltz was a power pitcher.
The strike-zone of the 1980s and 1990s was massive, especially for the elite pitchers.
Those egomaniac umps had guys they just liked and guys they just hated, too, and would adjust the zones accordingly
This. Fucking umpires used to openly talk about “their strike zones” all the time. Once on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN Joe Morgan called that shit out and said “its NOT your strike zone, its BASEBALL’s strike zone and there’s only one of them”
Joe was great, until he wasn’t.
Agreed. Don’t get me wrong: Joe Morgan was a prick, with his complete disdain for all analytics and shit-talking the Moneyball A’s. But he wasn’t wrong about the strike zone
That’s horrible to think about - I’m old now but some of the insane umpires of the past without replay was horrible.
You’re acting as if that doesn’t happen today even with ABS lol
About 10% as often, maybe. Now, if they get it wrong consistently, there’s an embarrassment factor. Back then, zero accountability. And anyone argued balls and strikes got ran, as it still is today
The ump in last nights cleveland-athletics game was embarrassing, I think the A’s won five challenges in a row
And they have a way to challenge luckily. Like 9 older umps are retiring this year including some terrible ones.
The Marlins vs Braves in the playoffs…
The strikeout that was about 18” into the right handed batters box…
Yeah, Glavine and Maddux benefited from it a lot, but I’d like to think it was never that egregious
Brother, go to YouTube and watch some highlights. The zone was INSANE
It makes people arguing about calls now seem so inconsequential
Glavine reacting to pitches 8” from the strike zone called balls is both traffic and comedic at the same time.
I agree. I was watching a interview with dave stewart who was one of the best pitchers in the 80s. He said he basically just threw FBs for the first 6 innings of a game and then would throw more 2 seamers and changeups towards end of game.
No pitcher is really doing that nowadays. Now pitchers trying to get that strikeout pitch.
I kind of blame media and voters whi even back in the 80s valued Ks over anything else. Like you werent dominate if you didn’t have close to 300 ks.
And something dave stewsrt said was “if i can get you out in 1-3 pitches even if it’s a soft contact, why try to do it in 4-7 pitches and waste energy trying to K 1 guy”.
He also used to OWN Roger Clemens back in the late 80's/early 90's.
I agree with the last paragraph to the extent that you need to be able to strike someone out when it matters. It's super valuable to get someone out in one pitch, but if you can ensure they're out without damage, that kind of rounds out the skill set.
Pitch count wasn’t a factor back then. Every pitcher was throwing over 100 pitches. “Had 85 pitches going into the 9th” was basically just a Greg Maddux thing. That’s why it used to be called a “Maddux” whenever someone pitched a complete game under 100 pitches
Look at the early 80s complete games
I think Rick Langford had like two years he threw 20 CGs
Langford’s 1980 A’s team had NINETY FOUR complete games.Even by the standards of the day Billy Martin’s pitching staffs were extreme.
He wrecked Langford and Norris’s careers
He had 28 complete games in 1980, 22 of them consecutive 😳
Bob Gibson had 251 career wins and 255 career complete games
Keep in mind that speed was measured differently back then. Those pitchers would likely have registered 94 to 96 by today’s measurements.
How are pitch speeds measured differently today that makes the numbers higher? Serious question, I never heard of this and genuinely curious.
Here’s an article that explains it better than I can
Interesting article. Thanks.
Thank you that was interesting
85 in the 5th is every Yankees starter except Cam
Also because the hitters that smoltz and maddux were facing took fewer pitches
Roger Clemens routinely threw 130-140 pitches with the red Sox. 100 pitches or number of pitches at all was not really a factor in the 80s
Back in their day, the number #8 hitter didn't have 20 home runs and the pitcher still hit. Lineups are more talented then they were thirty years ago and their encouraged to take a pitch or two.
The Cubs bullpen would like to know what best stuff looks like.
Tell them to watch the game from May 6, 1998 at Wrigley.
Got 'em
The Tigers bullpen literally costed them their season, the Tigers have the 4th best run differential in the AL at +75, but they’re 73-82, with 32 blown saves.
32 blown saves is…. not a number i thought would be possible in a single season
The Nationals had 38 about a week ago. New record. 17 different pitchers had blown at least one.
Nationals set the record for most blown saves in a season this year and did that a few weeks ago
They even added #s 40 and 41 in one game last night. Generational bullpen run this year
Thats wild considering the closer with the most saves this year has 40
I think it has more to do with the way that blown saves are recorded than it being a measure of futility.
If a reliever loses a lead as early as the 6th, that goes down in the books as a blown save.
That’s a staggering statistic
That’s crazy I hadn’t seen that
Ditto. Signed, Giants
Also these guys are throwing way harder than they were 10-15 years ago. Joel Zumaya and Aroldis Chapman used to be outliers with how hard they were throwing. Now there's a lot the high velocity guys.
Every team has at least one pitcher that can hit 100 mph.
Chapman is an outlier in those circles.
And he sure helped my team!
Not only will the batter see four different guys, all four will throw at least 95 with an electric breaking or offspeed pitch. Back in the day, only aces and closers were anywhere near that.
Yet somehow, scoring is virtually unchanged despite batting average being way down. Goes to show you that BA just isn't as important as we all once thought.
Interesting. So, I've been a baseball fan for all my life, but because of where I've lived and then TV rights, it's been a long time since I've been able to actually follow the regular season like I am able to this season. Given that I, like the OP, am used to minimal stats with BA being one of them, can you give me your opinion on which are the most important stats to look at and what they are.
I mean, I get that OPS is on base percentage and slugging, but I don't really understand its meaning or how it's calculated. Or, what's the median of being average and what you look at as what I would have looked at a 330 hitter back in the day. I'd love to hear a simple explanation that I can follow, if you'd be willing.
For OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage), an average hitter is usually around 0.700 to 0.750 or so. A good hitter is around 0.800, a great hitter around 0.900, and an elite hitter at or above 1.000.
It's calculated by first calculating on-base percentage (OBP) and then slugging percentage (SLG) and adding them. OBP is pretty self explanatory, it's like batting average but including walks and hit by pitch (reasoning being that things that get you on base, besides hits, are still important). An average OBP is around 0.320, with below 0.300 being poor, a good to great OBP around 0.370 - 0.380 I would say, and an elite OBP being above 0.400.
SLG is just like batting average, except that batting average treats a single, double, triple and home run as equally valuable, which obviously isn't accurate. So instead, SLG calculates the batting average while double counting doubles, triple counting triples and quadruple counting home runs, so the equation would be like, (1 × # singles + 2 × # doubles + 3 × # triples + 4 × # home runs)/AB where AB is the number of at bats. For SLG, average is typically around 0.400, good to great is around 0.500 and extremely elite, potentially MVP level is around 0.600.
Besides OPS (which is still an improvement over batting average) another good, more advanced statistic for judging hitting, which is related to OPS, is known as OPS+. It essentially measures the same thing as traditional OPS, except it also makes adjustments for ballpark factors (i.e., certain ballparks are easier to hit home runs in compared to others for example), and league wide scoring environment (which better allows for comparison across eras).
However, another change that makes it easier to interpret is the scale is changed to make it so that an OPS+ of 100 is exactly equal to the league average that season. And then every point above or below 100 is a percentage point better or worse than league average hitting. So if a batter has an OPS+ of 140 for example,…
Thank you SO much for this! I’m going to print it out so I can reference it until I understand by just hearing the stat. Then I’ll move onto WAR. 😉 Thanks so much for your time. I really appreciate it.
I understand how its calculated, but not what it really means.
Plus, strikeouts are Fascist.
Good call. This is high on the list.
