同感だな。ボンズもそのタイプかと思ってたけど、あいつは異常なレベルで勝利に執着するタイプで、その手段が野球だっただけなんだと思う。打撃コーチもやってたけど、今はストラバでノースベイのサイクリストたちをぶっちぎって競争心を満たしたり、SFでの式典でにっこり手を振ってスタオベもらったり、自分の打席や取り組み方を分析する方が楽しそうにしてる（もっとやってほしいけどな）。イチローは違って、野球そのものが自分という存在と完全に一体化してる感じだ。

初球で肋骨あたりを101マイルでビーンボールされそうになった後、次のインコースの速球をファウルで海に叩き込み、その次のアウトコースの速球をガニエから本塁打にした話。
「バットを速くしたと思われて、外で仕留められると考えたんだろう。でもその時は俺の方が一枚上手だった」。これは父親からのアドバイス――剛速球投手のインコースを引っ張ったら、次はアウトコースに来る可能性が高い、まともなバッターなら引っ張るためにバットを速くしなきゃならないから、アウトコースには対応できない――を思い出した後の話だ。ステロイドとかいろいろあるけど、投手が次に何を投げるかを理解する点で、ボンズは史上最も頭の良いバッターだったと本当に思う。投手が自分で決める前に、ボンズはもう次の球種がわかってたことも多かったんじゃないかな。
追記：テッド・ウィリアムズもそうだけど、子供の頃テッド・ウィリアムズは見てなかった。ボンズは子供の頃あまりに魅せられたから、実際の数字が自分が見たものに比べて物足りなく感じるくらいだった。162試合あって、ボンズは毎試合ホームラン打ってるように見えたから、73本って言われてもそんなにすごく感じなかったんだよな。

Agreed. I thought of Bonds that way, but I think bonds is just absolutely, obsessively competitive to the point of derangement and baseball was his avenue for that. He did the hitting coach stint, but seems much happier letting his competitiveness come out in stunting on North Bay cyclists on strava and gets his baseball fix via the occasional on field ceremony in SF, where he gets a standing ovation for a smile and a wave, or through dissecting his at bats and approach (which, he should do more of) . Ichiro just seems like playing the game is inseparable from who he is.

On homering against Gagne on a fastball away after pulling the previous fastball in on the hands foul into the water following a first pitch that nearly drilled him in the ribs at 101:

But I was a little bit smarter in that moment.” This is after he recalls advice from his dad about how if you pull an inside pitch from a fireballer, the next pitch is likely to be on the outside of the plate because any reasonable hitter has to speed up to pull that pitch and will swing through the outside pitch. Sure steroids and everything, but I really think bonds was the smartest hitter of all time in terms of understanding what a pitcher was going to do. I think a lot of times he knew what pitch was coming next before the pitcher made up his mind.
Edit: Ted Williams, too, but I didn’t watch Ted Williams as a kid. Bonds was so mesmerizing as a kid that his numbers seemed underwhelming compared to what I watched. They play 162 games, and bonds seemingly went yard in every one of them, so how could 73 be that impressive?

日本人は基本的に球場へ試合観戦に行く時以外、日常着としてユニフォームを着る文化があんまりないからね。

Japanese typically don't wear jerseys unless they're going to a game. Wearing a jersey isn't really a fashion option as it is in the west.
