My mother is from Kumamoto and my grandparents were laid to rest there. The 2016 earthquake destroyed a lot of infrastructure in the prefecture that it was still being rebuilt in 2019 when we went there to lay my grandmother to rest. We used to have a family grave up in the mountain in a rural area of Kumamoto. The earthquake badly damaged the small road leading to the grave site, which was deemed unsafe and ultimately closed by the municipal government. We had to pay people to go retrieve bones…

ありがたいことに、今のところ今回の地震は2016年ほど死者は出ていない。2016年の地震では300人近くが亡くなり3000人が負傷した。今回はイオンショッピングモールが倒壊して約30人が依然行方不明（200人以上は救出）だけど、確認された死者は『まだ』2人だ。犠牲者のご家族と行方不明の方々に心からお見舞い申し上げます。
So far, thankfully, this quake hasn't been nearly as deadly. The 2016 quake killed nearly 300 people and injured another 3000 people. So far there have been "only" 2 confirmed deaths, although the Aeon Shopping Mall collapsed and around 30 people are still missing (200+ people were rescued). My heart goes out to the families of the victims and those still missing.
見たところガス爆発だったみたいだから、建物自体が耐震構造を超えた地震に耐えられなかったわけでもなさそうだ。ガス管が漏れて爆発を引き起こしたのが本当の問題だったんだな。
And from the looks of it, it was a gas explosion, so not even because the structure itself couldn't withstand a quake it was not designed to be able to handle. The gas lines leaking and causing an explosion was the real problem
ショッピングモールからは一般市民は避難完了していたんだ。倒壊は地震の後に壊れた天然ガス管からの大規模なガス爆発が原因だ。まだ建物内で安全確保を行っていた救急隊員や従業員の方々が悲しくも犠牲になったと見られている。
The mall was evacuated of civilians. The collapse was caused by a massive gas explosion some time after the quake as a result of natural gas lines being damaged by it. It was first responders/employees who were still inside securing the building who are sadly likely lost.
日本のいろんな都道府県に行ったけど、九州の人たちは今まで出会った中で一番温かかった。本当に良いところだから熊本に別荘を買おうかと真剣に考えたこともあるくらいだ。近くには美しい景色がたくさんあって、街も田舎も海も全部それほど遠くないんだよね。
I've been to a lot of different prefectures, people in Kyushu were probably the kindest I've come across. I even considered getting a vacation home in Kumamoto because it's just that nice. All kinds of beautiful landscape nearby, city areas, rural areas, ocean views all not too far.

地震そのものがこのモールを倒壊させたわけではないって読んだよ。地震でガス管が破損し、それが後に引火して爆発・倒壊したんだ。地震発生時に多くの人はすでに避難していたが、発生当時はまだ作業員が中にいたらしい。
I read that the earthquake itself didn't cause this mall collapse. The earthquake broke a gas line which later ignited and caused this collapse. Due to the earthquake, they had already evacuated a lot of people from the mall, but there were still workers inside when this happened.
これほど厳しい建築耐震基準がある国では、地震の後に起こる二次災害の方が死者を出す危険が高いのかもしれないね。関係者全員の無事を願うばかりだ。
Secondary stuff that happens after the quake is probably more deadly in a country with such strict seismic building codes. Hoping for the best outcome for everyone involved.

日本のほとんどの建物やインフラは最初から地震や津波に耐えられるよう作られていて、国民も慣れている。だから超巨大地震を除けば、一番危険なのは地震によって二次的に引き起こされる事象なんだよ。
most buildings and infrastructure in Japan are already built for earthquakes/tsunamis, and the populace are so used to them thus, outside of the most extreme earthquakes, the most deadly things would be things that happen indirectly due to earthquakes.
俺の理解では、MEP（設備設計）チームが耐震基準に沿ってシステムを設計しているはずだ。だから日本で地震によるガス漏れが起きるのは奇妙に思える。設計の不備か、想定を遥かに超える揺れだったかのどちらかだろう。管の供給を止める感震遮断システムとかなかったのかな？エンジニアとして今後の調査がすごく気になるね。
From my understanding, the MEP team should've designed/planned the system. And these should follow provisions related to seismic events. So it is weird that a gas leak from a seismic event happened in Japan. Its either non-compliant design, or the seismic event being way higher than expected (safety factors and all that). Shouldn't there also be some sort of seismic detection system that stops the flow in those pipes? As an engineer, i'm pretty interested in the proceeding investigation.
別スレで日本のエンジニアだという人が言ってたけど、将来こうした事故を防ぐために、すべての商業施設に柔軟性の高いガス管を取り付ける作業を進めているらしいよ。
from the r/news thread someone who is an engineer in Japan said they're working on outfitting all commercial building with more flexible gas pipes to help prevent things like this in the future.
あの規模の倒壊を起こすなんて相当な大爆発だったに違いない。まだ情報が出続けているけど、俺が読んだBBCやAP通信のニュース記事では、地震で2階部分が崩落した後に爆発音が聞こえたと書かれていたよ。
That would have to be a massive explosion to cause that kind of collapse. News is still coming out but a BBC and AP article I read seems to say that the earthquake caused the collapse of the second floor and an explosion was heard later.

地震の後に起きた爆発で倒壊したんだと思う。ある意味では良くもあり悪くもあるね。日本の建物は耐震性にかけては世界最高峰なのに、地震の結果として爆発が起きるなんてちょっと不思議な感じがする。
I believe it actually collapsed due to an explosion that happened after the earthquake. Which is I guess better and worse, in some ways. Japanese buildings are some of the best in the world at withstanding earthquakes, so it's kind of weird that something blew up as a result of one

Utilities are always going to be one of the weakest points during an earthquake. Ruptured gas, water, and power lines are pretty common during powerful earthquakes.

Ya ruptured gas lines started tons of fires throughout the city. Interestingly, a lot of property owners set their own houses and buildings on fire too since insurance companies wouldn't pay out for earthquake damage but they would for fire damage.

故郷のためにできる最大のスゴイことが、地球の反対側で活躍して寄付や注意を惹きつけることだけだと知るのは、独特の切なさがあるだろうな。有名人の呼びかけは大きな力になるけど、村上としても本当はもっと直接手助けしたいと思っているはずだ。
There must be a special kind of heartbreak knowing that the most you can do for your hometown is to succeed halfway across the world and send money/attention toward the solving the issue. Celebrity efforts really do make a huge difference, but I'm sure Murakami would rather be doing something more hands-on to help.

報道が増えたのが主因だけど、NASAの研究によると干ばつが起きている地域では断層の活動が活発化することもあるらしいよ。

熊本（そして九州全体）は本当に素晴らしい場所で、日本に10年住んでいた中で旅した最高の地域の一つだ。熊本市や熊本県は、2016年の地震からコロナ禍の時期にやっと復興したばかりだったことを思い出してほしい。復興した直後にまたこんな巨大地震が来るなんて、見ていて本当に辛い。
Kumamoto (and Kyushu as a whole) is a really amazing place, and it is one of the best regions I traveled to in the decade I lived in Japan. Just a reminder that Kumamoto city and prefecture basically JUST recovered during the COVID years from the 2016 quake. Having another massive one after recovering is really upsetting to see.
