Yeah, I think Coventry's problem was just regular poor seasons rather than decline .Like the period 1990 to 2015 had exactly one season in the top half of the table and sixteen at sixteenth or below. I seem to remember that there was a study that said Coventry were the worst achieving club in the football league, based on average leaguer position or something, but then they messed it up by dropping to League Two and starting to actually win games again.

Interesting table, though I think position in the table alone hides a lot. A club can drop three places and still be playing better football, and vice versa. If you rebuilt this using points per game across a rolling three season window, plus net spend in the same period, I suspect the ranking would look quite different. Decline that comes with heavy investment is a very different story from decline on a shrinking budget. Curious what your data source was, because the eye test and the numbers of…
