Japan's hatred of offense needs to be studied

They no can hit dinger. But good fundamentals. That more fun to watch.

Don't worry Rocko. I got your reference

As a hockey fan of a team who loves fundamentals… a team full of sound fundamentals are very fun to watch

Definitely not a Kraken fan.

i wouldnt say they had good fundamental, NPB hitter stereotypically has bad plate discipline. Not to mention some NPB manager really love to gives their best hitter fewer AB, even ask them to bunt.

'Good fundamentals' here means outdated small ball strategies. Very annoying for statisticians, but generally fun to watch.

It's amazing. I've been watching the spring tournament doing overnights at work - If someone hits a single, the guy behind him always tries to bunt him over. Without fail. Small ball is worshipped over there.

Analytics say sac bunts are only useful in rather narrow situations, like late in tied or one run games. Also depends who's taking it. If you're doing it all the time, you're leaving a lot of runs on the table.

Oh shit I did not know this. As a royals fan I love small ball so much. Might have to watch that instead tbh

I need to get my dad to start watching NPB, maybe he'd finally stop bitching about guys swinging for the fences every time

Got a link to these games? I’d love to watch one or two just to see it

Naturally, they’re a little afraid of bombs….

You’re a bad person for making me laugh at that.

The reason that low-rebound bats were introduced into Japanese high school baseball is to prevent injuries to pitchers. Six years ago during a national tournament in the summer, a pitcher was hit by a batted ball and suffered a facial fracture. However, it is said that low-rebound bats made by Japanese manufacturers do not have very good distances. It's even rumored that wooden bats allow for greater distances.

So one event six years ago is the main reason for this? That’s insane

Welcome to Japan. If anything goes wrong, there must be a severe reaction to it. Well, as long as people accept it as being a bad thing.

Like how their roller coasters have to have an inspection walkway along the entire track length, just in case they need to inspect for seismic damage.

That seems damn reasonable.

Yeah, Japan's obsession with earthquake safety is why it is so safe from earthquakes.

I was in a minor earthquake in Japan last year and the building just swayed like it was built to and had no damage

On my second trip to watch the NPB, I was in a high-rise hotel during a relatively minor earthquake. The building swayed and then stopped. They didn't even make an emergency announcement since it was the middle of the night.

I went to Japan and asked our guide why would all the houses be made of wood if there were so many fires. Tokyo had burned to the ground multiple times in its history. He said it was because wood will sway while brick would crumble. They are so afraid of earthquakes that they have been willing to risk burning. I thought that was interesting.

Yup, that’s why buildings in NY usually have a concrete core whereas, buildings in earthquake zones usually have steel core.

Yeah but I've never died in a car crash so why do I have to wear my seatbelt?? -America

Kaizen principles at work!

You'll find almost no public trash cans in Japan because of the Tokyo subway sarin attacks and those were 30 years ago

That's not unique to Japan though, there aren't any trash cans in train stations in the UK for similar reasons, not to mention how strict airport security is now worldwide.

There is no public trash can pretty much anywhere though. You are expected to carry a personal trash bag with you and dump them either at your work or your home. At least that what was explained to me.

If this kind of thing happened in America there would be garbage EVERYWHERE, people are absolutely too lazy to take it home/to work here lol

There are plenty. Just go to the nearest conbini and throw it in the cans they have there. Most supermarkets also have places to throw stuff away. Hell, vending machines sometimes have little recycling boxes next to them.

Yeah, i discover the konbini trash can after a while. Still an experience since in most other countries, I would find a trash can at places like the subway or public buildings.

Every subway station I've been to has trash cans, except the really tiny ones. Although, I guess Tokyo might be different. Just seems a bit far fetched when people apply that claim to all of Japan.

Wait, how does that work with Japan (or at least Tokyo and other parts) having a supposedly vending machine and heavy consumer culture? Are people just carrying trash home, do businesses still have them and if so isn't that just pushing the potential threat onto private property? How do parks and natural spaces work?

There are often recycling bins near the vending machines. For garbage bins, you’d usually just need to take your garbage with you until you find one. It’s not like there are absolutely none, but they are quite sparse and only in particular types of locations. All of this works just because the culture. People just don’t litter in the same way they do in NA.

Most supermarkets and convenience stores have a place to throw away non recyclables. And most parks have a supermarket near them.

Not true. Vending machines have small recycling things near them. Supermarkets and conbini stores have garbage and recycling bins that the public can use. People just don't see massive garbage cans in the middle of the sidewalk and assume no public trash cans. Hell, in Osaka, we have public trash cans in the middle of the damn station.

Outdoor trash cans aren’t prevalent there since 1995 either.

Japan has this insane overreaction to everything. One terrorist put a bomb in a trash can. Let’s remove all trash cans in our city! It’s like Boston bans marathons after the marathon bombing.

IDK. A dead ball might be the solution to pitcher injuries

Sounds like the change had the desired effect.

Sounds like it was a extremely minor statistically probability. If you can hit it hard enough to go into the outfield, and you hit a pitcher in the face with that ball it's still gonna knock them over and hurt them badly. They got the desired effect but over a problem that barely exists.

I mean BBCOR bats replaced BESR bats in US high schools around 2010 for a similar reason and they have wayyyyy less pop. Not as bad as what it sounds like they’re using over there but pretty similar issue.

It's funny that there's a (fairly reasonable) response to safety concerns for offence like this, but at the same time it's perfectly normal to completely destroy pitchers arms and do long term damage constantly.

they would make the pitcher wear a helmet or facemask like they do in softball, but then the Japanese rule making body realized there was more money to be made by requiring everyone to buy a new bat.

The US already has a restricted metal/composite bat standard in BBCOR, and from what I have seen, it seems to work pretty well. It is still more forgiving than wood bats, so it is friendlier for high school and college players to use. At the same time, it is faaaaar more restricted than the previous standards, so it is safer for pitchers. Surely the Japanese high school leagues have probably studied BBCOR bats, but somehow they came up with an even more restricted version.

Joke's on you guys, it's so that those that do get scouted immediately /s

So you mean like BBCOR bats we have in the US? They are basically LL bats level in terms of pop

The first gen BBCOR bats where fucking dead AF I think Little Leauge at the time bats unironically had more pop

Baseball is the only sport in the world that will actively try to take away it’s most exciting play (home runs). Just let them use BESR bats.

We switched from BESR to BBCOR bats between my freshman and sophomore year of college. Our team homers went down significantly , but those things were dangerous. Playing third base when our 250 lb horse came to the plate was insanely scary. I can’t imagine a pitcher finishing 50ish feet away from that dude swinging.

That’s crazy that you had a horse on the team 🐴
