Yes, it is common in several other Asian countries, stop pretending Japan is so unique in this. 🤦🏻♀️ Korean fans are well-known to always clean up the stadiums and venues after games and even concerts, and both Korean & Chinese school children all have designated time to clean their schools and classrooms as well. This is just basic common hygiene, respect, and decency, for most East Asians.

I mean, not to add to the dogpile here, but I think you’re the one messing up reading comprehension. The original comment stated those habits aren’t common in East Asia. You explicitly mentioned China as a piece of evidence to suggest that it is very common in East Asia by stating that they’re taught from a young age. Then you somehow want to bait and switch the topic towards Chinese fans, as if they weren’t once the kids you used in your example.

Sheesh, just chill out and talk to them. I’m sick of the internet giving a half-baked argument and following up with a snarky jab that would make a 9th grader blush.

The OP stated a societal norm instilled in childhood that would explain this generous behaviour; you presented a contrarian view of a subset of that population (football fans?). What you imply now is that subset is a concrete, completely distinct portion of the population that somehow behaves differently.

What I’m trying to say to you is that these fans–whether football, baseball, or whatever– is not distinct from the general populace and represent the whole of the nation. So did they learn civic duties to such a degree as the OP suggests or did they not? Is everyone in Japan performative or do you really think Japanese football fans are cut from a different cloth? If your children become football fans, will they become as performative as the subset they’ll belong to? It’s a simple question.

The simple reason for why we leave trash around is that we’re lazy slobs. The other thing is that we know there will be paid custodians cleaning up the place any way, so why bother? We’re facing a big traffic jam unless we get the heck out of there fast. But you’re right. At the very least, we should throw our garbage into the trash and and not leave it on the seats. Ok, I have to admit it, we’re lazy slobs. But I don’t think we’re alone in that. I’ve never heard of European fans cleaning up after themselves. Maybe the Germans or the Swiss. I think it’s the Japanese who are unusually fastidious in comparison to,everyone else. But it’s also cool that you have this tradition. There’s nothing wrong with it.
