I first went to Japan in September of 1993 to live and work. I was living in an apartment building with a number of other foreigners at the time. Since Japan had become our adopted country, we decided to support the national team in their endeavor to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the US. So, me and three other recently arrived foreigners huddled in front of an old TV set rooting the Japanese side on for this match. Everything was going well until, as the video shows, Iran unexpectedly scored late in the match to eliminate Japan from going to the World Cup. The four of us just sat there in silence, stunned and disappointed that our adopted country's national side had been eliminated. I still have strange memories and feelings thinking about it now more than 30 years later.
