The Japanese do love baseball. I believe it
Love is an understatement. I was involved in the Cal Ripken World Series around a decade ago. I watched the Japanese team and they played at a level that I’d say even high schoolers would struggle. I ask the coach (via translator), how many kids were in national pool. “It wasn’t as much this year, only about 10,000.”
They used to also really love WAR.
Also curious what a replacement level player is considered in japanese HS!
A middle schooler? 😂
To say HS baseball in Japan is big is an understatement. Their annual HS tournament is essentially March Madness.
Take a quick search about how rigorous top level baseball at the high school level is taken in Japan. It gets dark, if I recall correctly there are suicides caused by it every year. Their expectations are insane and what the kids are put through is abusive depending on the team
Isn't it similar over here with high school athletics in the US?
I would guess their WAR formula is different from both bWAR abs fWAR
Japanese Baseball is the equivalent of Texas Football...
...can she catch? asking for a friend
Could use her on the Yankees
I bet she can't even grow facial hair. She was ready made for the Yanks
The Yankees changed that rule before Japan changed theirs about girls playing. What a weird world.
At least our rule was full of whimsy
THATS crazy
We could use her on the Padres
Bring her to the MLB!!
I guess WAR doesn't scale like it does in the MLB but a 13.6 WAR / 162 pace is insane to me lol surely even if it's high school that would make her a star right?
Can she play catcher or third base
Do you have a source for Japanese high school baseball WAR? And do you know what formula they use? This sounds interesting, I’ve never heard of such a low level league having such advanced statistics (I know bbref doesn’t even have WAR numbers for college baseball, for example).
I do, however the entire website is written in kanji, and I can’t read kanji.
Good shit Tsukishima!
How the heck do you value replacement high school player? Is it as if you threw an eight grader into a high school game?
If you think “average” in high school means 8th grade, sure.
Yeah that’s uh…. not how WAR works. A replacement player is not an “average” player. It is a player a team could grab with minimal effort ie a triple A player. So the eighth grade analogy is actually on point.
I say this with deep love of Japan and Japanese culture: This is the most Japanese shit ever - A rule is concrete and must absolutely be followed, and also thought of as an act of nature outside of human control to change. But also we are going to do the most touching, heartfelt, and meaningful thing for a member of our team.
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. I don’t disagree with your assessment here but as you said: the adherence to rules is part of a larger set of social dynamics that make Japan really fascinating and appealing to westerners while also being the same source of criticisms people have, both inside and outside the country, towards Japan. The question is whether it’s possible to amend the “bad” things while maintaining the “good” and that’s no easier to resolve in Japan than anywhere else.
Yeah, that's been my take. Strict adherence to rules and norms comes with a very strong social contract and much less polarization. The US on the other hand is massively individualistic and has a lot of polarization and way less community cohesion. Both systems give you good and bad outcomes and I'm not sure it's possible to have both.
If the good and the bad you’re describing are “fascinating to tourists” and “repressive and misogynistic,” respectively, I just feel like that’s kind of lopsided. Most places that are different are fascinating to a tourist. I understand that the rigidness and apparent politeness in Japanese society is interesting, really. But I struggle to see the goodness in it if this is the kind of thing it breeds.
doesn’t seem that appealing for women
It’s not if you have to make a life here. That’s part of my point: Japan can feel amazing if you’re a tourist, including for women. But living and working here is a different story.
Shit like this really disappoints me dude, and it honestly feels like a lot of the time it is Japan that really needs to catch up with the rest of us in some regards. I know they're a very stuck in their ways culture, but they need to be better. Edit: oh man OP went on some rant and then deleted all their comments about it lol.
Lmao what was the rant. Was he defending this misogynistic bullshit?
Honestly! I watched a YouTube video earlier today about Ohtani's time in the NPB and it's so incredible how everyone including his manager was so publicly harsh about him breaking with conventions. If it wasn't for his incredible talent at both it sounds like there's no chance he would have been able to do both, even if he was only pretty good at both. I know that's a bit of a tired conversation point but it's so fresh in my mind of the pretty common "wtf they really do that over there?) experie…
BDE?
BDE? watched the same video today
I was watching that too!
That has been part of the country’s history in many ways as I understand it (enjoy history but by no means a historian). They were fiercely isolationist for centuries, and didn’t really adopt expansionism until the late 1800s. It resulted in them being significantly behind the rest of Europe, Asia, and North America when it came to industry. They obviously had and have their own deep and rich culture but it’s “behind” (whatever that means) much of the developed world in some aspects.
is that why they’re a technological superpower in some categories yet still handle a concerningly high amount of business and political correspondence via fax?
The way I've heard it said is that Japan reached the 90's before everyone else and decided that was good enough
A common phrase is “Japan’s been living in the 2000s since the ‘80s”
So what you're saying is that Japan is living in the Matrix
They haven’t been a superpower in tech for decades at this point.
idk google says they kinda have the planet’s entire semiconductor material and manufacturing process by the balls, I would think that qualifies them as a tech superpower but I’m not gonna pretend to be knowledgeable about this topic lol
Based.

It’s really unfortunate for the team too because in the 19 games she was able to play this year (a different association running the games), she posted a 0.297 BA with a 1.6 WAR.
