Yeah, what the hell-
>Waseda
...yeah, that would be it.
Waseda is like a super duper mega Ivy League school, it's where the kids of high-ranking government officers and Diet politicians who have been in office for multiple decades go to become nepo babies. There's not a single more elitist, holier-than-thou university in all of Japan
Well, if you name Waseda, you should also name Keio. However, even then… your statement is not correct. There is nothing more “elitist, holier-than-thou” in all of Japan than Gakushūin. The high school and university are attended by true nepo babies - nobility, rich heirs of zaibatsu‘s such as Mitsui or children of former-prime ministers… You know people like the Emperor, John Lennon’s Yoko Ono (member of the Yasuda clan), Tarō Asō etc.
Besides, the requirements might be lower for Keio and Waseda than Todai, Kyodai or Hitotsubashi because the latter three are public, but in terms of old boy’s network it is pretty much the same. But amongst the private univesities, Keio and Waseda are definitely more difficult to get into than Meiji, Hosei and Rikkyo (the other members of the Tokyo Big Six).
Waseda and Keio definitely are more meritocratic than you claim.
Gakushuuin is a different solar system entirely. I was more thinking among the renowned baseball programs, admittedly.
Also, is Keio really that bad? I have always had the impression that Waseda and to a lesser extent Meiji were the pompous proud Big Six programs stuck firmly in the 1970s on purpose. And, well, as a Todai postgraduate candidate, I probably shouldn't talk too much shit about them, but yeah.
If being pompous, proud and being stuck in 1970s is your criteria, then Keio and Waseda are not really your candidates. They are the schools of the nouveau riche, which is quite the opposite of “being stuck in the past”. They are flashy and loud. Arrogant yes. But mainly because they are just richer than most people (they are private after all). So they are quite the opposite of being traditional. Also most likely to speak semi-good English, because a lot of them attended international school or were educated overseas as daddy was a big honcho for a Japanese company. Therefore, they are also more likely to adopt Western customs.
In fact, your school would be probably be considered the number 1 if you use those criteria. Nothing is more traditional than Todai. They do not believe in short cuts and pride themselves on how elite and how hard they grinded to attain admission.
So if I would translate it to baseball. Probably Todai will be the one that will bench players for batflips. They might suck in baseball, but they will play the game as it was 100 years ago intended. Because that is the fabric of the wider university - refusal to loosen the old standards.
So like Army and Air Force in football, refusing to pass the ball forward because that's too new.
Exactly, that is the ideal comparison. Perhaps also the Ivy League with their strict no athletic scholarships.
That said, I am not saying that Waseda is not traditional. Batflips is something they probably still frown upon, but punishing a player by benching him seems excessive for even Waseda. But then again, perhaps it is a light punishment for the Tokyo Big6 teams. For all we know, UTokyo would be even stricter and kicked him from the school completely lol.
Gf's mum and grandmother went to Gakushuin while every man in her family went to either Keio or Todai. They're upper middle class but not elite/noble etc...
In Japan, people commonly refer to graduates of schools like Keio or Todai as elite . Say “elite” ( erīto ) and people immediately associate it with high-status, high-achieving people from institutions like Todai or Keio.
So even if someone grew up dirt-poor or homeless, attending one of those universities would still make them “elite” by Japanese standards. Saying “my family isn’t elite, they’re just upper-middle-class, but everyone went to Harvard” is basically the same thing.
If your girlfriend’s family all attended Keio and Todai: they are elite. And that is precisely the kind of social class Gakushūin historically attracts. It’s broadly comparable to having a legacy background at an Ivy League school.
That said, Gakushūin itself isn’t particularly academically prestigious. It mainly attracts wealthy, well-connected people who aren’t necessarily the strongest academically. And because it’s a private university, it’s also a very different proposition from Japan’s top public universities. If money is a serious constraint, people generally look toward public universities instead.
Your girlfriend might be on the lower spectrum of the financial elite, but her family certainly belongs to the top 1% in academically, if all her male family members attended Todai or Keio. This is basically like saying, all my family members attended Harvard (Todai) and Wharton (Keio, best university for business), while my girlfriend attended Dartmouth (although Gakushūin is less academically strong than Dartmouth).
Gakushūin is not exclusively for the noble class, but since a big chunk of their population is, they do have a very rich student body. There are of course middle class people there, but you find them anywhere… Even at a private high school in Switzerland.
Edit: I apologise in advance if I misunderstood you incorrectly. Your comment can be interpreted in two ways. I was not sure whether you meant to prove me right or wrong. But a bit of extra info does not hurt. But do not tak…
Sorry, it's hard for me to grasp your comparisons (I'm not American, so I haven't heard of most of the universities you mentioned) They're certainly comfortable money wise, but they would read as comfortably middle to upper class where I'm from. They don't have the connections or the wealth I associate with the true elite. Some of her ancestors were part of that world, but she and her family are quite normal, common even
Well, this is just wrong, mate… This is like saying your gf’s family are bad baseball players as they all were bench players for the Yankees. A family that only consists of Todai or Keio alumni is by definition elite. It really sound really weird what you are saying. It is like saying, they are normal people as they are all family doctors and not surgeons.
Sure, they could be richer and compared to real rich people they are common… But you have to realise that it is unique in Japan to have your whole family attend Todai or Keio, even for the established families with billions at their disposal.
What was excessive was his apology
Waseda is the private version of Harvard here (state schools still have higher rankings but it’s the top of its class and above almost every other state school)
If things aren’t perfect they aren’t happy
I'd expect nothing less from a manager of a Tokyo Big6 Baseball League team. The league is more than 100 years old (older than NPB) and consists of baseball teams of six prominent universities in Tokyo (Hosei University, University of Tokyo, Rikkyo University, Waseda University, Keio University and Meiji University) and is considered "prestigious" because of that. They are the "elite" of university baseball in Japan. I can see how that leads to the line of thinking that would make Komiyama say shit like this.
You wouldn’t be making these excuses if it wasn’t “Thing, Japan” lol
Can’t imagine the comments here if this was a country that was part of the global south lol
Of course not, Japan would be the place where you’d see stupidly traditionalist unwritten rules behavior though
This is more Baseball Traditionalism rearing it’s ugly head, and that’s more common in the US and Japan for a lot of reasons
Is it making excuses to point out why someone would think like that? The guy's not endorsing anything, he's just explaining how someone having that stick shoved so far up their ass comes to be.
People can read but many can't interpret what they read.
Actually, statistically, most people can’t read.
What dem words say? It about my mama!?
Don’t be reasonable, this is Reddit.
They’re not excusing the behavior, they’re providing context.
You’re right, the comments would be different, but that commenter didn’t leave a “Japan good tho” comment.
You just wanted to shout out Thing, Japan.
They were providing context for why they acted the way they did in Japan's baseball culture. It wasn't excuse for it.
More like context than an excuse. Different culture, different standards.
Even in America, baseball has a lot of archaic traditions and standards that seem ridiculous when compared to the "younger" sports leagues.
He isn't making excuses. He's explaining.
This is a cultural difference. To understand why the manager had this reaction, you have to understand Japanese culture, especially in its more traditionalist circles.
If you know Japanese culture at all, this reaction is not surprising. It's exactly what I would expect.
Whether we think it’s a good or bad thing doesn't matter to them. In fact, even in Japanese media, backlash against these anti-individualist ideas is becoming increasingly common... but these ideas remain very deeply entrenched and change will not come quickly.
This is a baseball culture thing not a japanese culture thing. No one here has never had an old-school hardass coach? I've seen guys like this since I played Little League
Trust me, it's a Japanese culture thing.
There is a saying in Japan: "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down." In other words: conform, or society will hammer you.
Yes, there are old-school people like this in baseball in the US. But in Japan, especially in more traditionalist circles, views like this are the rule, not the exception. And it extends to evety aspect of life, not just baseball.
出る杭は打たれる is not a positive saying, and it doesn’t refer to conformity. It means if you’re too good at something, people will get jealous and try to hold you back or bully you.
I certainly agree that it isn't a positive saying. I hope you didn't somehow get the idea that I am endorsing the conformist leanings in Japanese society, because you'd be very mistaken if so.
As for the meaning of the saying, the interpretation I gave is the one that I have most often heard from Japanese speakers. Since I don't speak the language myself, I can't comment beyond that.
How is explaining the likely reasoning behind this nonsense excusing it? I'm guessing you didn't even bother reading the whole comment
Isn’t the “global south” pretty much ground zero for the type of baseball that encouraged bat flips and the like?
this is such an insanely obtuse comment lmfao, was this ragebait on purpose or are you naturally like this?
"the global south" ok man sure
What, do you not think of decolonizing the hegemonic positionality of epistemological dialectics that governs the way brown and black bodies are marginalized through imperialist manichean ideology that dichotomizes and reduces the bat flipper into the prototypical “other”? Read a book or something.
Imagine what @peachypal would say if this was some college from Mississippi or Texas. @peachypal would be out for blood.
Here are some responses I found on twitter about the case:
‘Baseball will decline because of the rōgai* named Satoru Komiyama.’
After you quit, you should retire from public life!
By the way, Hiro’oka should retire, too.’
*this is a word that both means problems caused by old people in daily life (like how old drivers in the US cause accidents) but also the harm that is caused by gerontocracy. It’s used sometimes as an epithet to mean like troublesome old person.
‘I thought Satoru Komiyama was a pragmatist that opposed outdated manners and stuff, but I guess not’
‘Maybe instead you should be mad at your pitchers who couldn’t get under control at all, Komiyama.’
There definitely are supporters, but their posts are pretty defensive, saying they can’t believe that people are upset about it, saying it’s not about tradition but safety, saying that if it was the MLB you’d be thrown at (highly doubtful, maybe if they were up by a lot but this tied the game up). Saw someone say that Waseda players should be held to a different standard because the school pioneered Japanese baseball. But the general tone of the Japanese response is actually surprise.
I’ll just say the fact that this is a news story should give a hint as to whether this coach’s behavior is the norm
E: also, to be clear, this saying is regularly cited by Japanese people as mistranslated, due to misconceptions westerners have about japan. It straight up just is not about conformity. Plus, I’ve studied the Japanese language for thousands of hours, and I personally have seen the contexts this saying is used in.
Late but it sounds like Japan's version of the Ivy League, which has a similar attitude here.
And if it was a story about a pitcher hitting a guy on purpose and getting sat, Americans would be c4ying, "but that's baseball!"
There are still people in other countries reading this and thinking, "good, bat flips should be punished."
Madison Bumgartner isn't from Japan but this is 100% the kind of thing old heads in the US believe.

Well fine then, waddle your ass around like a penguin for all I care. Just makes everyone around you laugh at you behind your back.
why are you so obsessed with my ass
Komiyama played in NPB for 18 years and played for the Mets in 2002.
I remember him well - the media called him "the Japanese Greg Maddux." It was a terrible comparison - Komiyama had very good control but he was definitely not an elite starter in Japan. He was more like the Japanese Brad Radke. As he never even started a game for the Mets, I don't think the Mets were too badly fooled by the nickname, either.
Thank you. The name triggered something in the back of my head and I could not place him
Imagine being so shitty that you are deemed not worthy of wearing a Mets uniform after one season.
Honestly Japanese baseball culture seems like a major bummer, the coaches all seem to be huge dicks lol
Feels like way too often you hear stories about a coach getting mad over something minor, and it seems common from high school up to the NPB
Not to mention the way some of their pitchers are treated they just run them into the ground at such a young age
My dad was the head coach of MLB China and coached the Chinese Jr Olympic team in like 06. He would tell me stories of how in a 4 day tournament Japan would throw a kid 100 pitches game one, next day 100+ pitches, get a day off, then throw 125+ in the championship.
It’s not uncommon at all for that type of use unfortunately
I was glad to see more teams using multiple pitchers in this year's Koshien tournament. The two finalist schools, Chiben Wakayama and Kendai Takasaki both used six pitchers throughout the tournament, their pitching depth is what propelled those two teams. Of course, there were still schools relying on one guy heavily like Tenri and Yokohama, but even they used multiple guys.
