I really thought you'd do better. Nation wide inertia is usually a decent mark for how good a country is gonna do, the more inertia and energy heading towards the WC, the better you do. In this WC, France, Scotland, Paraguay, the US, and some others had good inertia, so i guess it wasn't a great marker this time. Except for Paraguay partially i guess maybe, we kinda got where we realistically expected, but playing differently and with results weirder than expected

Sadly we had good players who dragged us to the world cup and then were let down by a manager completely out of his league. He was relying on them scoring worldies every game which just isn't going to happen. Also we have no decent strikers or goalkeepers and keep playing Grant Hanley because apparently we have zero good defenders too.

The lowest rankings for UEFA members are San Marino (211th, aka last place), Liechtenstein (206th), Gibraltar (206th), Andorra (206th) and Montenegro (199th). The year he said is 1996, it's likely because Russia went on a 17 game unbeaten run between 1995 and 1996. When you look at the games, they were mostly playing ministates and microstates during that period so not insanely impressive but that would probably explain it.

It doesn't because soviet union before collapse wasn't that good. What makes sense is that FIFA rating in the early 90s was flawed and only took into account your results but not opponent's strength, that is how Norway for a year or so was 2nd.

According to my relatives they got ref screwed vs Belgium in '86 world cup QF. Then reached finals of Euros in '88. Then in WC '90 who knows what would have happened if refs actually called Maradona for a handball preventing a goal in their group match It would have sent USSR ahead in a match they ended up losing 2-0. They went on to blow out tournament darlings Cameroon 4-0 in a match that didn't matter if Argentina and Romania made a draw which they did. Don't remember much about '92 Euros CIS…

Had a look out of curiosity, they were never pre-tournament favourites for any world cups but the closest they were seem to be 1962 and 1990 4/22 players were Ukrainian in '62 and 11/22 were Ukrainian in '90

It's Elo. It's a system designed for individual sport with 40+ games a season. And Elo calculations tend to become inaccurate when you don't have sufficient players within your own rating range. It's fucking useless in international football.

No, Elo made sense until FIFA mangled it beyond repair. The only reason Belgium are still in the top 30 is the doctoring FIFA did to Elo to prevent for example knockout games losses counting towards points losses. There are too many no-longer-great teams hanging out in the top who don't belong there. Norway are 19th on FIFA ranking with the update after the world cup but without a doubt would eat alive any team between them and including Belgium who are STILL IN FUCKING 10TH!

A national team can lose a single player due to retirement or injury and become much, much worse. And again, there's too little international games in a season to begin with and not a good consistency of opponent strength.

FIFA rankings are very maligned today but they used to be absolute nonsense in the past. I think at one point it was seriously just a giant league table with 3 points for a win. Any win in international matches that is.
