Yeah we had that too with Cameroon and African teams in 1990. There is a big difference though. Japan has a well establised league system that’s doing well and still improving and growing. IIRC Japan has the 2nd most fully professional football clubs in the world now, behind only England. That’s something Cameroon etc. never had.

No they lost pretty badly. Zero attacking threat and seemed to just shut up shop and try and contain France. Didn’t see much of them in the game. They did great getting there but failed big time against France and Croatia. Again none of the African teams winning the workd cup or regularly getting to finals that we were promised in the 90s.

Thing is, let’s say they keep improving and end up a solid top 10 nation, sooooo many things still have to come together at the right time to win a World Cup. Only 8 teams have won it in almost 100 years & only 6 in living memory for most people. If some of the injured players were fit, I would be totally confident of Japan taking it this year. Even now, they have a chance, because of a manager who rotates well.
