Has football lost popularity over the past decade in Taiwan?

Has it ever been popular? I feel like baseball and basketball have always been more popular

Don’t think it’s ever been popular

This. Always wanted to support Taiwanese sports, but it's either basketball or baseball.

What about volleyball? I have five Taiwanese friends, none of whom knew each other before I met them, and I think four of them are hardcore volleyball fans and grew up playing it (and still play it). One of them is even in the middle of her coach training.

I think Volleyball as a recreational sport is pretty widespread. However, speaking from a TV screen sport point of view, Volleyball is nowhere near baseball's popularity

Cool thanks, I’m from the UK where no one watches or plays or even really knows the rules of volleyball at all so I was quite surprised at how popular it seemed to be, but yeah I guess every country has those sports that are popular recreationally but less so in a professional context

Right, volleyball and badminton are pretty widespread in Asian recreational sports along with table tennis. I think football is more common in Europe. The countries that play a lot of football would be Korea, Japan, and maybe China (although China also is more basketball oriented).

I am parent of a kiddo in the South of Taiwan who is football mad. There are loads of grass roots teams/academies to choose from here (especially under 12 age groups), but maybe just 3-5 of any real structure or organisation/pathway? maybe? Many more further North. One example I can share of problems is in Tainan. The main team in they city are the Taiwan Steel team, they have won the league like the last 5 seasons running with players from Taiwan/Korea/South American players. They have NO acade…

Taiwan Steel

Taiwan Steel own a bunch of sports teams, kinda wild they’re not promoting them more. Guess it’s just some kind of billionaire vanity project?

I think it’s just that their focus is more on the basketball and baseball teams, which are fully professional. It’s definitely not a vanity project considering they’ve just spent a ton of money building a dedicated training facility park for their teams (first to do so in CPBL). I don’t really follow Taiwanese football, but you can tell that the owner does at least care about the two professional teams he owns. I came from Taiwan’s baseball academy system myself, and had also played U10 football…

❌ lose popularity ✅ never been popular

both can be true

International competitions do have an audience, especially world cup and euros, but the national team has always been abyssymal these past 20 to 10 years (minus a maybe 6 months window when they had that British coach, who then came back but his second term did not work out) so the following is minimal. To be polite. The federation is notoriously incompetent, which does not help. There are teams and a league system but it is for die-hard only. Not even on cable TV.

Ice speling on abysmal

Yah not my mother tongue and limited effort as I am writing from my phone on Reddit.

spelling* Ice or Nice* ? /shrug*

Do Taiwanese watch European leagues? The Premier League’s popularity has grown significantly across Asia in recent years.

Some do, but it's difficult to follow the EU leagues when time zone is a thing. It's also very difficult when there's not that many legit ways to follow the games. And most of the times, if you want to chat with a fellow fan, you'll have to go to Chinese forums in China. They can be very nasty, and I'm not even talking about the political differences. There are a lot of toxic fans and "fandom" wars (not normal club rivalry, but actual dumpster fire of fandom wars like the sorts you see on Tumblr…

Yes, as a football fan regularly watches no matter the time zone. But we’re a relatively niche community (not counting those gamblers).

PL is "popular" here among somme people (urban middle class), La Liga is/was avaliable on cable TV, I maybe saw some Bundesliga as well. I am now chatting regularly with a coworker who is in his 30s and enjoys PL and CL, which pretty much fits with what you are describing. Also said he watches PL the most because that s what avliable. Then, as someone else said, it is not a large community at the national scale (I dont think people over 50 cares for instance, it is too recent), and football is d…

It has never been popular in Taiwan

Taiwan has historically been about baseball? I’ve never seen anyone in my generation or older generation talking about football. It’s so unpopular to the point I don’t think you can even find a lot of stores carrying football boots

There’s lots of boots and an explosion of kids enrolled in academies.

It’s definitely popular during the World Cup at least, I’ve seen an explosion of sports shops selling national team kits.

Like many FAs around the globe, Taiwans suffers from incompetence and corruption.

This is definitely a key factor. The amount of news stories I’ve read about incompetence and corruption in the Taiwan is pretty high for how small an organization it is. Another factor is kids cramming for tests rather than doing sports. There needs to be a balance between testing and sport in school. It’s pretty clear most students could do with having their sports participation increased from an early age. Then there is a lack of footballing infrastructure. Where do you even play football in T…

You play at any of over one hundred academies. Check out Master Football Academy, over 300 teams across Taiwan. No one in this thread is actually involved in football in Taiwan methinks.

I know this isn’t a fair comparison, but when I just googled football clubs for kids in Taiwan and the UK it says there are over 200 in Taiwan, and up to 18,000 in the UK. I’m not saying Taiwan should have 18,000 football clubs for kids, but I’m saying if you think 200 is a lot, you know nothing about football. A more fair comparison would be to say just in the neighborhoods around my local club Arsenal in North London there are twice as many youth football clubs than there are in the whole of T…

Yeah I googled too. 0.1% of the population play football. But the growth of academies and clubs is positive. There is some hope.

Competitive sports are really a numbers game at the start. The pool of players you have to select from at the start is the biggest influence on later outcomes. Then you have how early people begin playing on average. Then finally the coaching quality. Spain is a good example of a country that has a culture and infrastructure to consistently produce footballing talent. Taiwan fails at the first stage because the opportunity to increase that player pool early on is removed because schools do not b…

I mean it's shameful that its taken foreign coaches setting up their own academies to get kids footy up and running. But then again the USP is that the coaching is done in English. So in places like Tianmou its become trendy to sign Randy and Willy up to under 8s footy.

there is that, and also the coaches seem to have a plan for later ages groups.

MFA hopes to get a team into the first division so that it has a pathway from under sevens all the way to the top.

Yeah, I see them alot on Socials. Looks like they have really good set-up. If we lived in Taipei, my kiddo would be trying out for them haha. Seems like La Liga is something similar in the South.

I like your post in general ... but starting young isn't the boost many believe ... just one paper ... ... most say lots of exposure to many sports until 12ish and then focus on a sport is the most promising route. This is also a great paper on German footballers ... get the kiddos loving sport(s) first, then pick a sport later to really focus on seems to be the way.

I think you misunderstood that paper, or they just wrote their conclusions oddly. The data shows that the countries with the most success had their players entering professional academies at an earlier average age which indicates starting early does make a difference. Also, it deals with professional academy data, so it doesn’t include any less formal training early on as a factor. You can infer that those selected for academies players might have been training for many years before they entered…

I mean if you want to question the quality of the paper, bring it up with publishers. Interesting how you think of 'elite' players as not playing World Cup football, the final 4 nations of this years World Cup are pretty elite. I was generally agreeing with you, but yeah reddit.

All those countries are ones which have a large pool of young amateur footballers, and lots of academies for young players. It’s probably why they dominate the knockout rounds. The reason why I say the World Cup is a poor place to collect this kind of data is because a significant number of elite players don’t manage to play in world cups because the best teams can only bring one, or two players in each position due to squad limitations, or because talented players might not fit the national tea…

totally fair point.

Taiwan dont really care much about football. They more into baseball. Esp japanese baseball

Side note: the women's team is at #40 (and yes, there are still almost as many teams in the women's division). Still lower than 20+ years ago, but pretty consistent in the last 15 years or actually winning some games (on the men's side, they've lost all their recent games, even conceding 6 goals in two separate games). One thing I wonder is whether every players in in the national team are full time professional who play football as career, or are there amateur mixed in.

None are full time professionals for the obvious reason there are no professional teams. Some are semi professional playing for company teams such as Datong.

Taiwanese don't play sports they study for exams. (Learning how to pass the exams, not actually learning anything)

Lmao how sad is that

Baseball is more popular than it’s ever been.

At grass root it's actually gaining popularity. But at adult level there is no professional League, no audience, no future, so football is just a form of children's activity. The drop in international ranking is more complex though. But the core problem: just not enough people care about football to path the way.

Taiwanese here. I bet 80% of my classmates and friends don't even know what offside means. I have never played or even watched a single football game before I went to college.

Probably just the rest of the world improving faster, due to the reasons already mentioned: incompetence, corruption, priority on schooling and lack of interest
