Important to note that Japan has a different approach to high school and college sports, where it exists alongside professional leagues in a traditional football pyramid with relegation, and a genuine prefecture
People need to tone down the hype of Japan. This is a country that still has never won a knockout stage match.
Early WC exits: 😠😠😠 Early WC exits, Japan: 🤩🤩🤩
Seriously lol
Had someone asking why Japan can so easily develop better players than us. It's easy because they don't. We're in similar talent levels, and we have had some higher level stars in the past. Japan is good, but i think there's a bit of "oh it's Japan, so we don't expect you to do well" attitude juicing their hype.
I don’t see what’s different from what you posted compared to what the US already has? I didn’t read the links though so maybe it is in there.
Difference is that high school/college football is not a viable pathway to the pros for soccer
Is it in Japan? They also have an extremely insular college and pro league compared to us. Seems like the change needs to be made by colleges and MLS to be much more US focused.
They do, I think about a third of their 2022 WC squad went the college route
The answer would have been adding Snoop Dogg to the WC broadcasts and doing commentary.
I think what most people are not realizing about the situation is this problem isn’t unique to soccer. This is strictly a capitalist American problem. People want to make money. Youth sports(all sports) are crazy money bags. It would most likely take legislation to fix the problem.
Complaining about capitalism while we envy a system that raises young people to be developed into athletes and sold off like assets to fund the next generation is a wild take. Like I get what you are saying. But come on
Is this a results business or a feel good business?
College teams are an issue, we don't have anywhere near total coverage across all D1 universities for men's soccer. We only have about 60% coverage.
Love the idea of turning our massive high school sports culture into a real pipeline. That's a pitch even my dad would approve of.
I’ve been saying this given how Japan is aligned with the US in terms of wanting kids to get an education. This seems like the best way forward for the US youth development system.
I was told anyone who considers college soccer is someone who doesn't understand ball. I'm sure that this Japanese model has been a failure judging by this attitude.
Americans just don’t love the slow pace of the sport. I genuinely think that’s the case. I’ve tried to get so many friends and coworkers to watch the cup and they all say the same thing. I watch for a few minutes but it’s just passing the ball around and I get bored. People want the non stop back and forth of basketball, heavy hitting and big plays of football, or the potential of a home run on every pitch even if nothing actually happens. Nobody cares about the build up because Americans want i…
If Americans can put up with the paint-drying pace of baseball, they will be delighted with a faster paced sport.
Literally my thoughts as well! I’m American, and the friends I’m referring to trying to get into the World Cup are American. They literally think soccer is boring and slow but baseball is exciting. They will literally ignore the game until they hear the crack of the bat hitting a ball, then jerk their head to the tv to see what happened in the hopes it’s a home run. Like it’s the instant excitement they want. With soccer you have to be paying attention at all times to see what’s happening becaus…
Isn't golf crazy popular on TV in the US? In my opinion basketball is boring. They just take turns scoring. Everyone is different!
Why learn from a country that's weaker than us in the sport? We should be looking at France, Spain, England, Germany. These countries produce far more talent than Japan and US combined.
Japan has beaten Germany and Spain in World Cup games before and is competitive with European and South American teams, just because they are not elite now doesn’t mean that they won’t be in the next decade, their progress has been exceptional over the last 30 years. And Japan has almost 100 players in Europe, they have much more depth than the US. And finally like I alluded to, maybe it’s worth learning from them because I think you can’t just copy wholesale what people do in another country an…
They play a pragmatic style of football that emphasizes fast defensive transitions. But they lack elite attacking players, which is what separates the good teams from the very best. Are you saying the US should adopt this style of football? Japan can beat the best teams in a game or two, but also struggle against teams of their own level. You have to look at overall results, not just a few games which suffer confirmation bias. The US also beat Japan in their recent match. Are you not going to co…
But they lack elite attacking players, which is what separates the good teams from the very best. Hell the Japanese fanbase is extremely well aware of this (what do you think the plot of Blue Lock is about?) Problem is they're picked as a dark horse every four years, yet the knockout stage wall every single time. When you're 0-5 in World Cup knockout stage matches that isn't simply bad luck. It's a trend
I’m talking about youth development, not style of play (which obviously depends on the players you have). And there is no doubt that Japan produces more soccer players than the US. Don’t forget that a number of starters like Balogun, Tillman, Robinson, Dest etc have never developed in the US. Which is fine, but if you care about youth development, it’s important that countries are building up their youth development pipelines. And I am looking at overall results and progress which Japan (for its…
Japan finished behind the US in this year's World Cup. They haven't won an Asian title since 2011. You are seriously overrating Japan and underrating the US. If you want to talk about population size and relative accomplishment, then we should be looking at Norway. Also, leveraging the diaspora and dual-nats is an advantage of the US. Japan doesn't have this advantage. If they had, they would use it, like Zion Suzuki. There goes your "cultural compatibility" argument.
I think that's being a prisoner of the moment, and being over focused on results over process. Norway hasn't qualified for a World Cup in decades before 2026. So if we were having this discussion in 2025, would you say that there is nothing to learn from Norway since they haven't qualified for the World Cup since 30 years ago? I think its a weird argument to not consider Japan because you think they are not considered an elite country, but I'm confident in a few decades they would be up there at…
I think you should stop underrating the US and overestimating Japan. You're mistaking analysis for narrow-mindedness. I never said the US system isn't flawed. In fact, I said precisely the college system and lack of promo/relegation are issues being discussed in the US. I also never said Suzuki isn't Japanese. I said Japan utilize dual-nats like any other country would. They just don't have enough of them to gain an advantage like the US.
This is so embarrassing. Reading your comments. This person you’re responding to is trying to give insight into other systems that work. And all you’re doing is embarrassing us Americans with lack on knowledge. Japan had zero soccer culture a little while ago. And then an American came out there and created a whole system out there that changed ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING for them. In a way that would put the American “system” (system needs to be in quotes because there isn’t one here) to shame. And t…
They are on par with us despite having a fraction of the population and investment. And the point of the post is that the way France, Germany, England, and Germany do things is culturally incompatible with America even though it's superior.
What exactly about those countries are "culturally incompatible" with the US? All of our best players spend a good portion of their careers in those countries.
That all the athletes in American sports go through high school/college athletics programmes? That there isn’t a widespread system of local clubs and promotion/relegation in the MLS (and so there aren’t that many youth academies in the US because owners of franchises don’t want to run the risk of relegation?)
These are things that many in the US are arguing to change. You also haven't explained how Japanese system produces better results than the current American one. How many Champions League players have they produced? How many play in the top 5 leagues in Europe? Most of them are in mid-table clubs in the Bundesliga. This isn't better than what the US or MLS system has right now.
The vast majority of their squad plays in the top five leagues of Europe (which includes Bundesliga). And yes top five leagues in Europe is a higher level than the MLS to most people
The current US squad is worth over 100m euros more than the Japan squad. The US have more players than Japan in the Champions League, which is the highest level of football in the world. I don't see what Japan is doing that's better than the US.
At this point, if you include Belgium Jupiter and Liga Portugal as top leagues, Japan has significantly more players in Europe in top leagues than the US.
Our best players go there at a young age to get the best training. As OP pointed out in the post, no way the high school-NCAA pipeline will just roll over and let an academy system usurp them.
Teenage years aren't that young. Not in soccer. The best players in the US don't go through the college system. They go to MLS development academies or get recruited by a European club.
Japan grew a taste for soccer roughly around the same time as the US. I would argue that the US have made bigger strides than Japan.
No offense but I really don’t think that’s true. I’m not American or Japanese, but Japan can consistently match up with the best teams in the world (beat England and Brazil in friendlies, drew against Netherlands) and were widely considered a dark horse this edition, but they have had terrible luck with the draw. The first European team the US has beat is Bosnia, and shit the bed against a washed Belgium despite a very favourable path to the quarter finals
But that's the point about progress right, its not going to happen overnight? Progress for the US now would be first putting up a challenge against a good European or Latin American side in a meaningful game IMO
In terms of actual results, it’s absolutely true. Matches are not won in pre-tournament previews.
We need a tiered league system. We need relegation. We need to incentivize success in the sport and not just make it about lining the pockets of the same people who own all the teams in all pro sports in the USA.
That’s not necessarily the answer sometimes different forms of infrastructure work for different countries and different cultures

Good post. I've always had a lot of respect for how Japan manage to punch above their weight.
