面白いアプローチだったね。オランダは5-4-1の低いブロックで守り、サイドで（時には3人掛かりで）人数をかけ、3-4-2-1でボールサイドに生まれる柔軟な三角形がボックス内でカットバックのスペースを得るのを防ごうとしていた。ある時点から、ウインガーたちはボックス内にボールを送り込むことに決めたようだ。ボックス内では数的有利だったので、それが彼らの今のところ「最適」なプレーだったんだ。前半、鎌田がLMFの位置でボールを多く受け、ファーポストへ堂安律にクロスを送っていたのを思い出すよ。

It was an interesting approach. Netherlands was happy to low block similarly in a 5-4-1 and double (even triple up) the flanks to prevent the flexible triangles that emerge in a 3-4-2-1 on the ball side gaining any space inside their box to get a cut back. At some point the wingers decided to just send it into the box, as they have a even man advantage inside the box, that’s their “optimal” play so far until they find another avenue. I recall Kamada receiving a lot of the ball in the LMF spot, sending far post crosses to Ritsu Doan in the first half.

Netherlands vs japan was the first good game which I enjoyed watching this world cup. Japan even before the game were prepared to run the whole game but netherlands negated that with the dutch height. I thought both the teams were analysing each others strength in the first half & hence gave too much respect than they both deserved . The dutch pretty much knows their forwards are not that good compared to their defense & midfield. So they played mainly from the back & tried to progress collectively as a team which became very predictable in their approach through out the first half. Japan tried to play mostly one side following the ball & their defense did not commit too much forward together which gave them spaces in the opposite direction. Both dumfries & gravenberch did not even move forward in the first half or probably japan forwards & midfield locked the dutch midfield.
But once the second half started things changed when both gravenberch & dumfries began to move forward, it not only created the space & pace it also created the height advantage which the japanese were not enjoying. The first set piece goal by dutch was a clear indication that they wanted to press the aerial advantage. But that very height & power advantage were also dutch’s negative. They assumed the japanese were not comfortable outside penalty box & made them to shoot from outside that zone which led to japans first goal. The second goal by sommerville was the workhorse like game which he played through out this game. Once the second goal came the dutch became overconfident with their defense & thought that japan will not use aerial shots against them because of the dutch height which they regretted in the end. In short both the goals by japan was clear signs of dutch overconfidence both in their height & quality of defence but playing the first half from the back made their defense tired which can be seen in the last moments of the cbs games. Japan played positively whenever they got space from the back lines forward movements. I enjoyed japanese reply from each dutch goals. In short this group with sweden & tunisia remaining is turning into a group of death.

Nice thoughts, I would say the Dutch didn’t become overconfident but were instead too cautious. Japan only scored their second goal because Koeman brought on Ake for a midfielder which invited the Japanese to apply greater pressure. Leading to good chances, a corner and the goal

Another interesting thing that I noticed in the last match , because of height mismatch, japanese player acceleration was pretty good and they were covering spaces quickly. In fm 26 or fm 24 terms they basically regroup in low block and waited for a chance. Once they have it they blasted off in a counter attack. If japan had players like mitoma then the match would go against netherlands. It seems japanese players are much tactically aware. The way everyone defended proactively , giving their all. This is a big thing. They played as a unit. Both in offense and defence.

It was such an unnecessary draw in the end. Koeman just substituted our team into a disadvantage. Subbing off both Summerville and Malen for Depay and Koopmeiners was a mistake. I get subbing off Summerville. He had a yellow card. But at least keep Malen on the field. They are fast and you are defending a one goal lead. You need your fast players for the counter attack. After that Japan was just the better team and deserved the equalizer.

Indeed. Koeman blundered with the subs and subbed defensively way too early. Summerville being subbed for his yellow card is very understandable, but the moment Japan started to sub offensively, Summerville should have been replaced by Kluivert and later in the game Reijnders for Ake. With the 4-4-2 formation, you have more control on the midfield and have de Jong and Gravenberch to help out defensively, and both players can give a pass deep towards Kluivert and Reijnders or the backs for a counter. Once you have punished the Japanese offense with a third goal, you can sub off Reijnders with Ake. The biggest mistake Koeman made was subbing off the players with speed who you need for a counter. Add to that that Koeman subbed at the moment his players got a good grip on the Japanese players and were getting in a flow. This was probably the worst sub since Advocaat subbing Robben.

i mean even summerville was very questionable imo. he was easily our most threatening attacker and being on a yellow really isnt that big of a deal as a forward. also wasnt like summerville was playing rash and diving into tackles or whatever that warrented a sub, he was just having a really good game.

Koeman tactics are defensively boring. Netherlands need a more modern football philosophy manager like Germany has, fluid and high pressure team.

Netherlands seemed content to sit back with one goal advantage. They seemed much less prone to pressing the ball and regaining possession, which would have kept more control of the match. Ultimately caused them to lose out on what would’ve been a very crucial win.

I’d like to see what a professional tactical analyst would say about Ronald Koeman’s tactics. Are they even any good, does He have responses for what the opposition offers? Is He overhated or really just a poor manager? (I’ve grown to think the latter, but I’m certainly no expert on Dutch tactics and player selection). I’d hope for such an episode one day

I stand by the fact that Koeman was great in his first term, mostly because Depay and Wijnaldum were in the best form of their lives around that time. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing favorites when your favorite is that good.

Both teams are missing multiple key players due to injuries, so playing the ‘what if’ game doesn’t mean much, but considering Mitoma is Japan’s absolute star, while the three you mentioned aren’t exactly the biggest stars for the Dutch side, his absence has a much bigger impact on Japan, logically speaking.

同意するよ。もう一つ追加させてほしい。もしクーマンが前線にスピードのある選手（サマーヴィル、マレン）を残すか、デパイの代わりにターゲットマン（ブロビー、ヴェグホルスト）を投入していれば、オランダはクリア後にすぐにボールが自陣に戻されるのではなく、もっと前線でボールをキープする選択肢が増えたはずだ。でも全体的には、オランダ人として、素晴らしい試合だった！日本の選手たちの決意には感動するし（僕もフェイエノールトファンだから、渡辺と上田のプレーを見れるのも最高だよ）、戦術的な側面も楽しめた。日本に最高の幸運を祈るし、遠くまで進んでほしい！

I agree with you, and would like to add one more thing to it. If Koeman had left one of the speedy players up front (summerville, mallen), or sub in a targetman (brobbey, weghorst) instead of depay, the Netherlands would have had more options to hold the ball further up the field, instead of the ball instantly being returned towards their half after clearing it.
But overall, as a dutchman, it was a great game! I love the determination of the Japanese players (I’m a Feyenoord fan as well, so seeing Watanabe and Ueda play is awesome too) and enjoyed the tactical side of it. I wish Japan all the best and hope they will make it far!

Well said! i’m Swedish but Japan is my favourite team to watch and i hope you make it to the quarterfinals at least! Think you are spot on about opponents switching to a low block 5-4-1 to counter Japan’s transitional counter attacking play. I was impressed that Moriyasu selected offensive wingbacks in Doan and Nakamura. I think that helped Japan gain control of game, but unfortunately they were not able to create much until the end of 2nd half.
The Japan-Tunisia difference in quality, and Tunisia’s abysmal defence, will probably mean an odd goal japan victory in that game. Early goals change the course of games and I hope Moriyasu is braver against tunisia and sets Japan to attack from the first minute and score early. Sweden created many chances from the same type of channel passes to the wide forwards that has become a Japan hallmark. You probably could even afford to rest Kubo in that game and still get a win, if you score early.
Japan-sweden will become a pivotal game for both Sweden and Japan i believe. Both teams will likely play safe and try to minimise mistakes early on. Sweden’s defence is not great either, our centrebacks and central midfield (minus ayari) have lapses in concentration and are not comfortable on the ball, they are definitely worse than Netherlands. But Sweden have arguably the most gifted strike partnership in this year’s world cup in Gyökeres and Isak.
Japan’s fluid interplay through the middle should be able to create chances against sweden’s static midfield and defence. Hopefully both teams will qualify, but I think Japan will win. With the way things are looking, the group winner will play against either Brazil or morocco, not the easiest knockout round awaits!
